OATEY 82047 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 82047 general purpose drain connect to 3 inch or 4 inch pipe?
Both. The 82047 is built to take either 3 inch or 4 inch connection, so you can use it on either size DWV run without ordering a different body.
2) What material is the Oatey 82047 drain body, and can I solvent weld it to ABS pipe?
The body is ABS, so it solvent welds directly to ABS DWV pipe with ABS cement. If the piping in the building is PVC, this is not the matching body for a cemented joint.
3) What size grate comes with the Oatey 82047 drain?
It ships with a 5 inch grate in brass, held by a square ring. That means the rough opening and finished floor area need to accept a 5 inch round grate face, not the 4 inch or 6 inch sizes used on other general purpose drains.
4) Do I need to buy the grate and ring separately with the Oatey 82047?
No. The 82047 is sold as a drain with the 5 inch brass grate and the square ring included, so the only extra items on a typical install are the solvent cement and the pipe stub.
5) What is a general purpose drain like the Oatey 82047 used for versus a shower drain?
A general purpose drain is a floor drain: it collects incidental water from a utility room, laundry, basement slab, or equipment area and ties into a 3 or 4 inch DWV line. A shower drain body is sized and clamped for a membrane or pan liner. The 82047 has a brass grate and square ring for a floor application, not a pan liner clamp.
6) Can I standardize on the Oatey 82047 across a building with mixed 3 inch and 4 inch floor drain lines?
Yes, and that is the main reason to stock it. Because the 82047 accepts either 3 inch or 4 inch, one part number covers both line sizes, which cuts the number of drain bodies a maintenance crew has to keep on the shelf.
7) Is the Oatey 82047 brass grate suitable for a finished floor where appearance matters?
The grate is brass, which is the usual choice when the drain shows in a finished floor rather than a mechanical room. Plastic grates are the cheaper option for concealed or utility locations; brass takes foot traffic and cleans up better in a tiled or exposed slab area.
8) How heavy is the Oatey 82047 drain assembly?
Roughly 4 pounds as packaged, which is a one hand set for a plumber roughing in a floor drain. Most of that weight is the brass grate rather than the ABS body.
