OATEY 2336S – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use Oatey Pool-Tite 2336S cement without a primer?
Yes, where local code permits. Oatey 2336S Pool-Tite medium body blue cement is formulated so no separate primer is required, but local plumbing code governs. If your inspector enforces primer on pressure pipe, prime anyway.
2) What size and type of PVC pipe will the Oatey 2336S blue cement bond?
It is rated for all schedules and classes of flexible and rigid PVC pipe and fittings up to 6 inch diameter with an interference fit. Above 6 inch, or on loose-fit joints, you need a heavier body cement instead.
3) Is this pool cement safe on potable water lines, or is it pool plumbing only?
Both. Oatey's Pool-Tite blue cement complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements and is recommended for potable water, pressure pipe and DWV applications, even though the application type is listed as pool and spa. So the same can covers a spa return line and a potable service repair.
4) Can this cement be used on CPVC or ABS pipe?
No. It is a PVC-only solvent cement. CPVC hot water lines require a CPVC-specific cement, and ABS drain pipe requires ABS cement or a transition cement for ABS-to-PVC joints.
5) What temperature can I glue PVC at with this Oatey cement?
Recommended application range is 40 to 110 degrees F (4 to 43 C). Below 40 F the solvent will not soften and fuse the PVC properly, so cold morning work on an outdoor pool line needs to wait for the pipe surface to come up, not just the air.
6) Why choose a hot blue medium body cement over a regular clear PVC cement for pool work?
The hot blue formula is built for wet conditions and quick pressurization, which is the normal situation on pool and spa plumbing where the trench is damp and the pump gets turned back on the same day. A standard clear cement wants dry pipe and longer cure time. The blue color also gives an inspector visible proof a joint was cemented.
7) Does Oatey 2336S meet low-VOC rules in California?
Yes. It is a Lo VOC solvent cement meeting SCAQMD 1168/316A or BAAQMD Method 40, so it is usable in California air districts that restrict solvent cement VOC content. It also meets ASTM D2564 for PVC solvent cements and is certified to UL Greenguard Gold.
8) What is the maximum service temperature for a joint made with this cement?
The cured joint is rated to a maximum use temperature of 60 C (140 F). That covers pool and spa return lines and cold potable service, but it is not a substitute for CPVC on domestic hot water runs that can exceed it.
