OATEY 14208 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use a rubber rain collar on a hot-mopped or built-up roof?
No. The 14208 rubber rain collar is not for hot-mopped or built-up roofs. The hot asphalt used in those systems is a petroleum product and the collar is rubber, which Oatey specifically says not to expose to petroleum based products. On a built-up or mopped roof, use a flashing assembly rated for that roof type instead.
2) Will the Oatey 14208 rain collar handle a hot vent like a Type B gas vent?
Yes, within limits. The collar is rated for 180 degrees F continuous heat and is approved for Type B installations, so it can go over a Type B gas vent pipe as well as a plumbing vent. Anything running hotter than 180 F continuous is outside the rating.
3) Do I need to caulk or seal around a rain collar after installing it?
No caulking is needed with the 14208. It is designed as a slip-on protective water shield: it drops down over the pipe and seats on its own, shedding water away from the penetration. That makes it a quick fix on a leaking vent penetration without pulling the flashing or breaking out sealant.
4) Does a rain collar replace roof flashing on a vent stack?
No. The 14208 is a secondary water shield that slides over the pipe above the flashing, not a flashing itself. The roof penetration still needs a proper pipe flashing or boot; the collar then covers the top of that joint so water runs off the pipe instead of into it. Buying this alone will not seal a bare penetration.
5) Will a black rubber rain collar fade or chalk out after a few summers on the roof?
The 14208 uses a non-fading collar material and is black throughout, so it holds its appearance in UV exposure rather than greying out. Keep petroleum based products, including asphalt roof cements and solvent sealers, off the rubber; those are what degrade it, not sunlight.
