OATEY 38474 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Oatey 38474 washing machine outlet box be installed in a 1-hour or 2-hour fire-rated wall?
Yes. The Oatey 38474 is Warnock Hersey certified for both 1-hour and 2-hour fire-rated wall assemblies. The box is molded from Bulk Molding Compound with UL-classified intumescent pads and UL-classified insulating material, which is what keeps the wall rating intact where the box penetrates it. That matters in multi-family corridors and demising walls where a standard plastic laundry box would not be permitted.
2) Is the Oatey 38474 washer box for copper or PEX supply connections?
Copper. The 38474 is the copper-connection version of the fire rated single lever box, so the supply stubs are soldered to copper tube. If your rough-in is PEX or CPVC you want the matching connection type instead, not this one, unless you transition to copper at the box.
3) What is the advantage of a single lever washing machine box over two separate valves?
One lever shuts off hot and cold at the same time. For a property manager or on-site maintenance crew, that means a tenant or tech can kill both supplies in one motion when a hose bursts, instead of hunting two handles. It also makes it realistic to ask residents to close the valves between wash days, which is the cheapest way to avoid burst supply hose claims.
4) Can I test the drain line after the Oatey 38474 box is set?
Yes. The box comes with a test cap at the drain that pulls out easily once the DWV system has been pressure or water tested, so you can rough in, test, and then open it up at trim-out without cutting anything.
5) Can the valves and drain be arranged differently on the Oatey 38474 laundry box?
Yes, the box allows flexible valve and drain arrangement, so you can suit the plumbing to the framing and to where the standpipe drops rather than forcing the rough-in to match a fixed layout. Handy in retrofit work where the existing drain is not centered on the new box location.
6) What part number do I order for the Oatey fire rated single lever copper washer box?
Order Oatey 38474. That is the manufacturer part number for the fire rated, single lever, copper washing machine outlet box in standard pack, and it ships at about 3 pounds.
