1) Will the Oatey 39239 vent kit handle my kitchen island sink and dishwasher?
Yes, comfortably. The valve in the 39239 is rated for 20 DFU on a branch and 8 DFU on a stack, and a kitchen sink with a dishwasher typically runs 2 to 3 fixture units. That rating is the real limit to check, not the pipe size: count the fixture units draining through the line the valve serves and stay under 20 on a branch.
2) Can an air admittance valve replace the vent stack through the roof?
No. The Sure-Vent in the 39239 kit is rated for use as a secondary vent only, so the building still needs its primary vent open to atmosphere. Use it where running a vent through the roof is impractical, an island sink, a bar sink, a remote lavatory, a basement addition, and leave the main stack alone.
3) What size pipe does the Oatey Sure-Vent 39239 connect to?
The adapter and connection in the 39239 kit are 1-1/2 inch PVC, and the valve itself is approved for vent pipe up to 2 inches, so one valve covers the common 1-1/2 and 2 inch branch vent sizes. For a 1-1/2 inch tubular drain, the included threaded adapter and trap land you directly on size with no bushing.
4) Should I buy the Oatey 39239 kit or just the Sure-Vent valve by itself?
Buy the kit when you are building the fixture connection from scratch, an island sink loop or a new remote fixture, because it brings the 1-1/2 inch P-trap, 6 inch extension tube, threaded adapter and deep box flange with it. If the trap and drain are already in place and you only need to add venting to an existing 1-1/2 or 2 inch vent line, the bare valve and an adapter are all you need and the rest of the kit is surplus.
5) At what pressure does the Oatey Sure-Vent open, and will it leak sewer gas?
Sweet Spot technology opens the valve at -0.01 psi and seals at 0 psi and above, so it admits air the instant a draining fixture pulls a slight negative and closes as soon as pressure equalizes. Positive pressure in the line keeps it shut rather than venting into the room. Every unit is functionally tested at 1/4 inch and 30 inch water column, and the air inlets are screened to protect the seal.
6) Can the Oatey Sure-Vent air admittance valve be buried in a wall or closed cabinet?
No. The valve has to draw air, so it needs an unobstructed path to a ventilated space. A sink base cabinet or an access panel works; sealed wall cavities and insulated voids do not. The 6 inch extension tube in the 39239 kit exists for that reason, it lifts the valve up off the branch so you can get it above the trap weir and into open air inside the cabinet.
