1) Does the Paxton BLU 2 door board work on its own, or does it need a master controller?
The BLU 2 Door Slave Board is an expansion controller. It hangs off a master controller over half duplex RS485 and adds two more doors to a site that already has BLU running. A single master supports up to 50 doors of expansion boards behind it, so this is what you add on door 3, 5, 7 and up rather than the first board you buy for a new site. If nothing on site is running BLU yet, you need the master controller first.
2) What power supply do I need for a Paxton BLU 2 door expansion board?
It runs on 12V or 24V, AC or DC. Paxton specifies a 12V DC 2A supply with a charger. Draw is about 500mA typical at 12V and 2A maximum at 12V, so size the PSU for the board plus whatever your locks pull, since strikes and mags are usually fed from the same supply.
3) Will my existing Wiegand readers work with a Paxton BLU 2 door controller?
Various Wiegand formats are supported, along with all Paxton clock and data readers. That means a mixed site is workable: keep third party Wiegand readers on some doors and Paxton readers on others. Two readers total are supported on the board, one per door, so in-and-out reading on a single door uses both channels.
4) What cable do I run from the Paxton BLU controller to the reader?
Belden 9540 10 core, with a maximum run of 10m from the board to the reader. That 10m ceiling is the number that catches people out on a long corridor or a gate: if the reader sits further than 10m from the enclosure, the enclosure moves, not the cable spec.
5) If the internet drops, do the doors on a Paxton BLU expansion board stop working?
No. Access rights are stored locally on the control unit and it keeps making decisions with the server unreachable. Cardholders badge in as normal; what you lose during the outage is live reporting to the cloud, not the door. This is the answer for remote sites on cellular where the link is not guaranteed.
6) Does the Paxton BLU slave board come with a backup battery?
No battery in the box. The board takes a 12V 7AH battery for standby and it is bought separately. The specified PSU includes a charger, so the battery wires into the supply rather than the board itself. Budget one 7AH battery per enclosure if you want the doors to stay live through a power cut.

Hardwired. Readers land on the board over Belden 9540, and the board itself joins the master controller on an RS485 bus. The cellular option in the BLU range is how the site talks to the cloud, not how the doors talk to the controller, so you are still pulling cable to every reader and lock.
