The proximity readers with genuine HID technology are for use with the Net2 or 3rd party access control systems. These readers work with standard cards with genuine HID technology, operating at 125 kHz. The Wiegand card data is transmitted untruncated. The reader range includes the proximity P50M reader with genuine HID technology and the proximity metal reader with genuine HID technology. These readers are pre-activated with 125kHz genuine HID technology out of the box. There is no need to purchase an activation license to use this technology.

1) Will the Paxton P38 proximity reader work with an existing HID 125 kHz card population?
Yes. The P38 reads HID 125 kHz proximity ISO-compliant cards using genuine HID technology, so the credentials already issued in a building keep working. It ships pre-activated for 125 kHz genuine HID, so no separate activation license is needed to read those cards.
2) Can the Paxton P38 reader be mounted outside on an exterior door?
Yes, it is IPX7 rated and stated as suitable for external use, so a gate, a loading dock entry, or an exposed main entrance is within what the reader is built for.
3) Does the Paxton P38 only work on Net2, or can it feed a third party access control panel?

No. The P38 operates at 125 kHz and reads HID proximity cards at that frequency only. If a site has moved to 13.56 MHz smart credentials, this is the wrong reader for it.
5) How much space does the Paxton P38 reader need on a narrow door frame or mullion?
The reader measures 3 x 1.5 x 0.6 inches, so it fits a narrow stile or a mullion where a full size reader will not. The 0.6 inch depth is what keeps it close to the surface on a glass front door frame.
6) Do I need to run separate cable for the Paxton P38, or is a lead included?
A 3 metre cable comes with the reader, so the run from the reader back into the door frame or to a junction point is covered for a typical single leaf opening. Longer distances back to the controller are your own cable.
7) Do I have to buy an HID license to use the Paxton P38 with HID cards?
No. The reader arrives pre-activated with 125 kHz genuine HID technology, so there is nothing to license to start reading HID prox cards. The license only comes into it for Wiegand output.
