  • The proximity readers with genuine HID technology are for use with the Net2 or 3rd party access control systems. These readers work with standard cards with genuine HID technology, operating at 125 kHz. The Wiegand card data is transmitted untruncated. The reader range includes the proximity P50M reader with genuine HID technology and the proximity metal reader with genuine HID technology. These readers are pre-activated with 125kHz genuine HID technology out of the box. There is no need to purchase an activation license to use this technology. Wiegand output is available with a separate purchase of an activation card. The P series readers are supplied with black fascias only. Replacement fascias are available in black and white/gray, and are free of charge to Paxton registered installers from the extranet.

1) Will the Paxton P50 mullion reader fit on a narrow aluminum storefront mullion?
The P50 proximity reader body measures 4 inches high, 2 inches wide and 0.6 inches deep, so it sits on a 2 inch face without overhang on a typical storefront mullion. Measure the flat of your mullion before drilling; anything under 2 inches wide will leave the fascia edges proud.
2) Will the Paxton P50 proximity reader read my existing HID 125 kHz prox cards?
Yes. The P50 uses genuine HID technology at 125 kHz and reads standard cards built on that technology. It ships pre-activated for 125 kHz HID out of the box, so there is no activation license to buy before it will read your existing credentials.
3) Can I use the Paxton P50 reader with a non-Paxton access control panel, or does it require Net2?
Both work. The P50 is intended for Net2 or third party access control systems. For a third party panel you will normally want Wiegand output, and that requires a separately purchased activation card. The Wiegand card data is transmitted untruncated, so full card numbers reach your panel rather than a shortened format.
4) Is the Paxton P50 proximity reader rated for outdoor door entry use?
The P50 carries an IPX7 water ingress rating and has a metal body, which is why it gets specified on exterior gates, garage entries and weather-exposed storefront mullions rather than an indoor-only plastic reader.
5) What do I need to order alongside a Paxton P50 reader for a Wiegand installation?
Add a Paxton activation card. Out of the box the reader is live for 125 kHz genuine HID reading, but Wiegand output is enabled only by a separate activation purchase. If you are wiring into Net2, you don't need it.
6) Does the Paxton P50 come in white, or only black?
Black only as ordered. P series readers are supplied with black fascias. Replacement fascias exist in black and white/gray, and Paxton makes those available free of charge to registered installers through their extranet, so a property manager standardizing on a light finish should have their installer source the fascia.
7) Should I use a mullion reader or a standard single gang reader for a glass storefront door?
On a glass front there is usually no wall next to the leaf to mount to, only the aluminum mullion, and a full size single gang reader is wider than that flat. A mullion form factor like the P50 at 2 inches wide by 4 inches high mounts on the vertical face. Use the wider body reader where you have drywall or a gang box beside the opening and want longer read range.
8) How much does the Paxton P50 reader stand off the face of the mullion?
Just 0.6 inches of depth on the P50, so it projects only slightly from the mullion face. That matters on a narrow stile door where a bulkier reader can catch a swinging leaf, a pull handle, or a passing cart in a corridor.
