Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the KT Series extra heavy duty?
The KT bolt contains two concealed 1/4" case-hardened steel roll pins for added resistance to sawing and drilling attacks beyond PDQ's other deadbolt duty tiers. It pairs this with a wrought brass scalp and reinforced zinc diecast rose.

When should a KT deadbolt be specified instead of a KM or KV?
The KT is intended for extra heavy duty, high-abuse exterior doors, high-vandalism areas and facilities needing maximum forced-entry resistance. The KM is built for standard heavy duty commercial exterior doors and the KV for lighter-duty interior or light commercial use.

What door thickness and backset does the KT fit?
The KT is built for standard 1-3/4" doors with a 2-1/8" diameter door prep and supports a 2-3/4" (default) or 2-3/8" backset. Other door thicknesses are available by contacting the factory.

PDQ KT116626L – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ KT116 deadbolt fit a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door with a 2-1/8 inch bore?
Yes. The KT116 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors with a 2-1/8 inch diameter cross bore, which is the standard commercial deadbolt prep. Backset is 2-3/4 inches by default with 2-3/8 inches available, so it drops into either of the two common preps. For door thicknesses outside 1-3/4 inches, PDQ handles those as a factory request.
2) Do I need to order the KT116 handed for a left or right swing door?
No handing to worry about. The KT116 is non-handed, so one part number works on left or right hand doors, inswing or outswing. That makes it simple to stock a single SKU across a building.
3) Will the KT116 bolt latch into my existing deadbolt strike?
The bolt is a 1 inch throw brass bolt and ships with a 2-3/4 by 1-1/8 inch strike plus dust box. A 1 inch throw needs a frame pocket deep enough to take it, so if you are reusing an older strike cut for a shorter bolt, check the pocket depth. The included strike and dust box are the cleaner route on a frame you can prep.
4) Can the PDQ KT116 be keyed into my existing Schlage C master key system?
Yes. SCC (Schlage C compatible) is the standard keyway, and the lock can be master keyed (MK), construction master keyed (CMK) or grandmaster keyed, or keyed to existing bittings in a system you already run. The cylinder is a 6-pin brass mortise cylinder keyed to 5 pins, with two keys per lock. Other keyways are also offered, including Arrow AR1, Corbin 59A1/60/L4, Russwin D1, Schlage E and C-K, Sargent LA and RA-RC, Accentra (Yale) E1R and GA, Falcon E-R, and PDQ's restricted TA.
5) What does the Entrance single cylinder function on the KT116 actually do?
The KT116 is the ANSI/BHMA E1151 Entrance function: key operation from the outside and a turn piece on the inside, so occupants can throw or retract the bolt without a key from the secure side. If you need a key on both sides instead, that is a double cylinder function, not this one. An ADA thumbturn is offered as a special order.
6) What do I have to specify when ordering a PDQ KT116?
Four choices beyond the lock itself. Finish: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 625 bright chrome, or 626 satin chrome. Cylinder: conventional cylinder or less cylinder if you are supplying your own. Backset and faceplate: 234, 234R radius, or 234D drive-in at 2-3/4 inches, or 238, 238R, 238D at 2-3/8 inches. Keying: KD, 0-bitted, KA2/KA4/KA, MK, KE to existing bittings, or CMK. Plus the keyway.
7) What is the difference between the PDQ KT116 and the KM or KV deadbolts?
Duty tier. The KT is the extra heavy duty line, aimed at high-abuse exterior doors, high-vandalism areas and openings where forced-entry resistance is the priority. The KM covers standard heavy duty commercial exterior doors, and the KV is for lighter-duty interior or light commercial work. If the door gets attacked rather than just used hard, the KT is the one.
8) Should I order the KT116 less cylinder?
Order less cylinder (part numbers ending L, for example KT116626L) when your locksmith is fitting cylinders from an existing keying program or a restricted keyway you already control. Otherwise take the conventional cylinder version (ending D), which arrives with the 6-pin brass mortise cylinder keyed to 5 pins and two keys.
9) Which KT116 faceplate option matches a door already prepped with a radius corner bolt front?
Pick the R codes. 234R gives a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 2-1/4 x 1 x 1/4 inch radius faceplate, and 238R is the same radius front at a 2-3/8 inch backset. Square corner preps take 234 or 238, which include a square corner filler for a 1-1/8 inch width, and 234D or 238D are drive-in bolts where no face mortise is cut at all.
10) What makes the PDQ KT deadbolt harder to defeat than a standard commercial deadbolt?
Two concealed 1/4 inch case-hardened steel roll pins run inside the 1 inch throw brass bolt to resist sawing and drilling. The trim is a wrought brass scalp over a reinforced zinc diecast rose, and the bolt front and strike come in stainless steel or wrought brass. That package is why it gets specified on high-vandalism and detention-adjacent openings.
11) Will this deadbolt match the finish on the rest of my building's hardware?
Five finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. 626 satin chrome is the usual match for satin stainless and 630-family commercial hardware. If the inside and outside trim need to differ, PDQ handles split finishes through customer service, with the outside trim designated first.
