Prodatakey RDRM – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Prodatakey mullion reader work with the HID 125 kHz cards we already issue?
The RDRM mullion reader reads 125 kHz credentials and is HID compatible, so the prox cards and fobs already in circulation on a 125 kHz system keep working. Output to the controller is Wiegand, 26 to 37 bit. If your existing cards are 13.56 MHz smart credentials, this reader will not read them.
2) Can I mount a Prodatakey mullion reader on the door frame instead of the wall?
That is what the mullion form factor is for. The RDRM is narrow enough to land on a door frame mullion where a single gang reader will not fit. If you are mounting to a wall or an existing single gang box, the wider single gang version of the Prodatakey standard reader is the one to order instead.
3) Can the Prodatakey mullion reader be used on an exterior door?
Yes, outdoors is covered. The mullion reader is built with potted electronics and is rated for -4 to +140 F (-20 to +60 C) and 0 to 95 percent relative humidity non-condensing, which covers most exterior entrances outside of extreme cold climates. On a north-facing loading dock in a climate that drops below -4 F, plan on a heated or sheltered mounting.
4) Does the Prodatakey mullion reader need its own power supply?
No separate supply. The reader draws 12V DC off the Prodatakey controller board and pulls a maximum of 30mA, so it powers and communicates over the same run back to the controller. Budget that 30mA per reader when you size the controller's total reader load.
5) What else do I need besides the reader to control a door with Prodatakey?
The reader alone does nothing. The RDRM is a Wiegand reader that terminates into a Prodatakey controller board, which supplies its 12V DC and makes the lock decision. The system runs on pdk.io cloud access, and that requires a subscription. You still need the controller, the locking hardware, and power for the lock.
6) Can I wire a Prodatakey mullion reader into a non-Prodatakey access panel?
Electrically it speaks standard Wiegand, 26 to 37 bit, at 12V DC and 30mA, which is the same interface most access control panels accept on their reader ports. That said, the cloud management side is pdk.io and requires a subscription, so the full feature set assumes a Prodatakey controller behind it.
7) Is this a hardwired reader or does it run wireless?
Hardwired. The RDRM is a wired mullion reader that runs cable back to the controller for both its 12V DC power and its Wiegand data. There is no battery and no wireless option, so a cable path from the frame to the controller is part of the job.
