1) Will the Prodatakey ruggedized single gang reader work with my existing HID prox cards?
The Prodatakey ruggedized single gang reader reads 125 kHz credentials, which is the frequency HID prox cards operate on, so everyday proximity credentials already issued in a building will read at it. Output is 26 bit Wiegand, plus 8-bit burst for pin mode.
2) Can this Prodatakey reader be mounted outside in the weather?
Outdoor mounting is what the ruggedized reader is built for. It carries an IP68 dust and water rating, an IK10 impact rating, and an aluminum alloy housing, and it runs from -4F to 140F (-20C to 60C) at 0 to 95% humidity. That covers exposed exterior doors, gates, and parking entries as well as wash-down or dusty interior areas.
3) Will the Prodatakey rugged reader fit a standard single gang box?
It is a single gang form factor measuring 5.7 x 3.3 x 1 inches, so it covers a single gang electrical box or mounts flat to a mullion or wall surface of at least that footprint. Depth off the surface is the 1 inch dimension, worth checking against a narrow stile or door frame before you cut in.
4) What power supply do I need for the Prodatakey ruggedized reader?
12V DC, with a 10% tolerance, and it draws a maximum of 45 mA. That is a small enough load that a typical access control power supply or the reader port on a PDK door controller will carry several of them, so size the supply by the strikes and mags on the job rather than by the readers.
5) Will this reader work with 13.56 MHz smart cards or mobile credentials?
No. The rugged single gang reader is a 125 kHz proximity reader, so it reads prox cards and fobs at that frequency only. If a facility has moved to 13.56 MHz smart credentials or is issuing mobile credentials, this is the wrong reader and you need a high frequency model instead.
6) Does this Prodatakey reader have a keypad for PIN entry?
Yes, and that is the reason to pick it over a card-only reader. It accepts a PIN as well as a proximity credential, so you can run card-only, PIN-only, or two-factor where a user has to present the credential and then enter the PIN. The PIN digits go back to the controller as 8-bit burst.
7) Can I wire the Prodatakey rugged reader into a non-PDK access control panel?
Its output is 26 bit Wiegand, the common format nearly every access panel accepts, so the reader wires to a third party Wiegand input the same way it wires to a PDK controller. Note the PIN side reports as 8-bit burst, so a panel that expects 4-bit or per-key Wiegand keypad data will not read the PINs correctly even though the card reads fine.
8) Does the Prodatakey reader need a cloud subscription to work?
The reader itself is a Wiegand device and does not talk to the cloud on its own. Management, real-time updates, cloud backup and support come through PDK.io, which is a subscription, and that runs at the controller level rather than at the reader. If you are wiring these to a third party Wiegand panel, no PDK subscription is involved.
9) Is this reader tough enough for a school or apartment entry where it might get abused?
IK10 is the top impact rating in the IK scale, and paired with the IP68 sealing and a sand-blasted aluminum alloy housing it is the version to use at a student entrance, a loading dock, a parking gate, or any door where a plastic reader gets broken off the wall. For a protected interior office door you do not need this level of housing.
