1) Will the Prodatakey RDRGRK reader work with our existing HID 125 kHz proximity cards?
Yes. The RDRGRK reads 125 kHz proximity credentials and is HID compatible, so the cards and fobs already issued in a 125 kHz system will read on it. Credential output to the panel is 26-bit Wiegand, with an 8-bit burst mode for keypad PIN digits.
2) Can this Prodatakey rugged reader be mounted outdoors on a gate or exterior door?
It is built for exterior use. The housing is rated IP68 against dust and water and IK10 against impact and vandalism, in a sand-blasted aluminum alloy shell. Operating range is -4 to 140 degrees F (-20 to 60 degrees C) at 0 to 95 percent humidity, which covers most North American exterior gate and door locations.
3) Will the RDRGRK reader fit a single gang electrical box?
It is a single gang reader measuring 5.7 x 3.3 x 1 inches, so it covers a standard single gang opening with the body projecting about an inch off the surface. Note the 5.7 inch face is taller than a single gang plate, which is normal for a keypad reader and gives room for the 12-key pad.
4) What power supply do I need for the Prodatakey RDRGRK reader?
Feed it 12V DC, plus or minus 10 percent, and allow 45 mA maximum draw per reader. That current is low enough that several readers can share a typical access control power supply, but size the supply for the locks on the same circuit, not just the readers.
5) Can I require a card and a PIN on this reader instead of just a card?
Yes. The RDRGRK has a backlit 12-key keypad, so it can be set for card only, PIN only, or two-factor, where the user presents a proximity credential and then enters a PIN. PIN digits go out as an 8-bit burst; card reads go out as 26-bit Wiegand.
6) Do I need a PDK.io subscription to use this reader?
The reader itself outputs standard 26-bit Wiegand, so it can wire to a Wiegand input on a controller. The PDK.io cloud features (real-time updates, cloud backup, 24-hour support) are what require a subscription, not the reader hardware.
7) Is a vandal resistant reader like this worth it over a standard plastic prox reader?
On exposed openings, yes. A parking gate, loading dock, exterior stairwell or student-facing door gets hit, kicked and weathered; the RDRGRK answers that with an IK10 impact rating and an IP68 sealed aluminum alloy body. For an interior office door out of the weather, the rugged housing buys you nothing and a standard indoor reader is the simpler choice.
