1) Will the Prodatakey RDRGRS rugged reader work with my existing HID 125 kHz prox cards?
Yes. The RDRGRS reads 125 kHz proximity credentials and the reader is described as HID compatible, so the everyday prox cards and fobs already issued in most buildings will read on it. Output is 26 bit Wiegand protocol, with an 8-bit burst pin mode, so it drops onto any panel input expecting standard 26 bit Wiegand.
2) Can this Prodatakey rugged prox reader be mounted outdoors at a gate or exterior door?
Outdoor use is what it is built for. The aluminum alloy housing is rated IP68 for dust and water and IK10 for impact and vandal resistance, and it operates from -4 to +122 F (-20 to +50 C) at 0 to 95 percent humidity. That covers unsheltered entries, parking structures, and gate pedestals in most climates.
3) Will the Prodatakey RDRGRS reader fit a standard single-gang electrical box?
It is a single-gang form factor reader measuring 4.72 x 3.27 x 0.89 inches, so it covers a standard single-gang back box with the depth kept under an inch off the wall surface. On a mullion or narrow stile, measure the 3.27 inch dimension against your available face before committing.
4) What power supply do I need for the Prodatakey RDRGRS reader?
12V DC, plus or minus 10 percent, drawing a maximum of 45 mA. A regulated 12 VDC access control power supply covers it easily, and at 45 mA per reader you can run several off a single modest supply. This is a hardwired device, not PoE and not battery.
5) Does the Prodatakey RDRGRS have a keypad for PIN entry?
No. The RDRGRS is the prox-only model in the rugged reader family. If you need two-factor, meaning a credential presented and a PIN entered, you need the keypad version of the rugged reader instead. The RDRGRS does support 8-bit burst pin output format, but there is no keypad on the unit itself.
6) Do I need a PDK subscription to use this reader?
The reader itself is a 26 bit Wiegand device and will report to any controller accepting that output. Used as part of the PDK.io cloud access platform, with real-time updates, cloud backup and 24-hour support, a subscription is required. Ordering the reader alone does not include that service.
7) Is the Prodatakey rugged reader a standalone door controller or does it need a panel?
It is a reader, not a controller. It presents credentials and sends 26 bit Wiegand to a door controller that makes the lock decision and switches the strike or maglock. Budget for the controller, the 12V DC power, and the locking hardware separately when you scope the opening.
8) How durable is the finish on the Prodatakey rugged reader for a high-traffic entrance?
