Prodatakey R 2 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the PDK Red 2 controller need a separate power supply and enclosure, or is everything included?
The Red 2 ships as a board in a metal lockable security can, with a built-in power supply on the board and a 14 VDC 2A 28 watt class 2 wall adapter to feed it. The one thing you still have to buy is the backup battery, which is not included but must be installed to comply with UL 294. The can is rated for indoor use only, so plan on an IDF closet or electrical room rather than an exterior wall.
2) How many doors will one Prodatakey R2 controller run, and can I expand later?
Two doors per Red 2 board. It carries two reader connections, two form-C relays, and two each of Input A and Input B, so a pair of openings with reader, strike or maglock, request-to-exit and door position contact is exactly what it is sized for. Expansion is by adding more controllers to the system rather than adding doors to this board, and PDK states the platform scales from two doors to a thousand.
3) Will the Red 2 power my readers and maglocks off the board, or do I need a separate power supply for the locks?
Peripherals run off the bus, but there is a shared budget you have to respect. Total output to all peripherals is 2 amps at 12V when the board is run on the included 2.5 amp adapter, split across every port. Two readers and two 12V strikes usually live inside that; a pair of maglocks plus readers often will not. Add the draw on your spec sheets before you commit. The board itself idles at 35mA and accepts 12V to 24V DC input.
4) Can I run the Red 2 wireless or on PoE instead of pulling a data drop?
Both are options, but neither is on the board out of the box. The Red 2 is an Ethernet controller by default; wireless and PoE are add-on module kits that plug onto the board. The WiMAC radio runs 2.4 GHz on 802.15.4 with about a mile line of sight and 450 feet indoors on average, which covers most outbuildings and gatehouses where trenching conduit is not worth it. The PoE option is PoE++, so budget a switch port or injector that actually delivers it.
5) Does the PDK Red 2 support OSDP readers or only Wiegand?
Both. The Red 2 is equipped with OSDP and also takes Wiegand readers, so you can retrofit an existing Wiegand head end now and move to OSDP as readers get replaced. Credential and mobile communication is encrypted at AES 128-bit.
6) Do I have to configure an IP address on the PDK Red 2?
No. Plug an Ethernet cable in and the Cloud Node discovers the Red 2 automatically. There is no IP address to type in and no port forwarding step on the controller itself, which is the main reason this board goes in faster than a controller you have to address by hand.
7) What size is the Red 2 enclosure and where can I mount it?
The can measures 7.625 x 10.4375 x 3 inches, so it fits comfortably on a plywood backboard or beside a panel in a comms closet. It is a metal lockable security can rated for indoor use only. If the opening you are controlling is exterior, the controller still lives inside and you run reader and lock wire out to the door.
8) Can the Red 2 go in an unconditioned space like a parking garage or a warehouse mezzanine?
Operating range is -4 to +140 F (-20 to +60 C) at 0 to 95 percent relative humidity, non-condensing. That covers most unheated garages and warehouse spaces. What it does not cover is anywhere the can gets wet or sees condensation, since the enclosure is indoor-rated only.
9) How will I know if the backup battery on my access control has failed?
The Red 2 runs a fully supervised power circuit that watches input voltage, output voltage, battery voltage, and overall controller health. A dying standby battery reports itself instead of being discovered during the next outage, which is the practical reason facilities buyers pick this board over a controller with an unmonitored battery lead.
10) Can I use my own 24V access control power supply instead of the included wall adapter?
You can, within limits. PDK recommends the provided supply for proper operation; if you substitute, use a regulated supply putting out no more than 24 volts measured at the terminals. Going over that, or feeding it unregulated, is on you. Keep in mind the 2 amp peripheral budget quoted for the board is tied to the included 2.5 amp adapter.
