1) Will the PDK Red 4 expansion board control four doors on its own, or do I need a main controller too?
The Red 4 (R4E) is an expander board, so it adds four doors to an existing PDK Red system rather than standing alone. Each board carries four form-C 2A relays, four reader ports, and four Input A plus four Input B terminals, all on removable screw-down terminals. It talks back over Ethernet and self-discovers: plug in the network cable and the cloud node finds it without you typing an IP address.
2) Can I run the PDK Red 4 controller wirelessly or over PoE instead of pulling a data line?
Ethernet is built in on the Red 4, and the wireless and PoE++ paths are add-on module kits, not on-board features. Buy the Red WiMAC wireless kit or the PoE++ kit, plug the module onto the board, and it runs. WiMAC is 2.4 GHz on 802.15.4 with about 1 mile line of sight and roughly 450 ft indoors, which is what makes it worth using between buildings on a campus where trenching a line is the alternative.
3) What power supply does the PDK R4E four door board need, and is a battery included?
Input is 12V to 24V DC, and the board has its own onboard power supply that feeds the readers and door hardware straight off the bus, so you are not adding a separate reader supply per opening. A 12V 12ah backup battery is not in the box and has to be installed for the installation to comply with UL 294. Power supplies ship with the Red Max controller, not with an expander board.
4) Does the PDK Red 4 board work with OSDP readers or only Wiegand?
Both. The Red 4 supports OSDP as well as Wiegand on its four reader ports, with AES 128-bit encryption on the communication side. If you are specifying a new install and want encrypted, supervised reader-to-controller wiring instead of legacy Wiegand, this board will take it; if you are cutting over an existing site door by door, the Wiegand readers already in place stay usable while you migrate.
5) Will the 2A relays on the PDK Red 4 drive a maglock or an electric strike directly?
There are four industrial-grade form-C relays rated 2A on the board, and the board feeds door hardware directly from its own bus at 12V to 24V DC. Form-C means you get both normally open and normally closed contacts per door, so fail-safe hardware like a maglock and fail-secure hardware like a strike both wire up without an extra relay module. Check the holding current of the specific lock against the 2A contact rating before you commit the circuit.
6) What enclosure do I need for a PDK Red expander board, and how much room does it take?
Red expander boards mount to any Red enclosure, so you are not matched to one specific can. Plan the space around 7.625 x 10.4375 x 3 inches. Remember the UL 294 battery has to live in that enclosure too, so size the can for the board plus a 12V 12ah battery rather than the board alone.
7) Can a PDK Red 4 controller board go in an unheated garage or parking structure?
Operating range on the Red 4 is -4 to +140 F (-20 to +60 C) at 0 to 95 percent relative humidity, non-condensing. That covers an unconditioned garage, a stair tower, or a mechanical room in most of the country. What it does not cover is condensing conditions, so an exterior wall location where the board sees temperature swings past dew point needs a sealed or conditioned enclosure.
8) How do I know if the backup battery on a PDK access control panel has failed?
The Red 4 runs a fully supervised power circuit that monitors input voltage, output voltage, battery voltage, and overall controller health. For an MRO or facilities team, that is the difference between finding out the battery is dead during a power outage and getting told beforehand. It is also why the 12V 12ah battery is worth installing even outside a UL 294 requirement, the board is watching it.
9) Can I add more doors to a PDK Red system later, or do I have to size it up front?
Adding doors later is the point of the Red 4 board. Each expander adds four openings to the system, mounts in any Red enclosure, and self-discovers on the network when Ethernet is connected, so growth from a two door tenant space to a multi-building campus is a matter of adding boards rather than replacing the head end. For a property manager phasing openings a floor at a time, that means the first purchase does not have to guess the final door count.
