Prodatakey R2E – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the PDK Red 2 controller need a separate power supply and network switch, or is that built in?
The Red 2 board has an on-board power supply and built-in Ethernet, so you're not stacking a separate supply or a converter into the can. It runs on 12V-24V DC input and powers readers and other door hardware directly off the bus. Plug an Ethernet cable in and the Cloud Node discovers it automatically, no IP address entry. What is not included is the backup battery, and a backup battery has to be installed to comply with UL 294.
2) Can I use OSDP readers on the PDK Red 2, or am I stuck with Wiegand?
Both. The Red 2 supports OSDP as well as Wiegand on its two reader ports, so you can run OSDP with encrypted credential communication on new readers or drop it onto existing Wiegand wiring during a phased migration. If you're standardizing a facility on OSDP, this board doesn't force a reader swap on day one.
3) How many doors does one PDK Red 2 controller handle, and can I add more later?
Two doors per Red 2 board. Each board gives you two form-C 2A relays, two reader ports, two Input A and two Input B connections, all on removable screw-down terminals. It's an expansion board, so you add another Red 2 whenever the next pair of openings comes online, whether the system ends up at two doors or a thousand.
4) What do I have to order separately to run the PDK Red 2 wirelessly or over PoE?
Neither wireless nor PoE++ is on the base board. Wireless needs the Red WiMAC module kit and PoE needs the Red PoE++ module kit, both sold separately. Each plugs directly into the Red 2 board and is ready to go, no reconfiguration. Ethernet is the connectivity that ships on the board itself, so if you have a data drop at the door you don't need either kit.
5) Can the PDK Red 2 power the maglocks and strikes at the door, or do I need a separate power supply for the hardware?
The board powers readers and other door hardware directly from the bus off its own built-in supply, running on a 12V-24V DC input. Each opening switches through an industrial-grade 2A form-C relay, so the 2A contact rating is the number to check your strike or maglock draw against before you commit the design.
6) Will the PDK Red 2 board fit in my existing electrical closet space?
The Red 2 ships in a metal lockable security can measuring 7.625 x 10.4375 x 3 inches. It's rated indoor use only, so it belongs in a conditioned closet or IDF, not on an exterior wall or in an unheated parking structure. Operating range is -4 to +140 F with 0 to 95 percent relative humidity non-condensing.
7) How far will the PDK WiMAC wireless reach if I can't pull cable to a remote gate or outbuilding?
With the WiMAC module fitted, the Red 2 runs 2.4 GHz on 802.15.4 with a range of about one mile line of sight and roughly 450 feet indoors. That's the number that decides it: a detached maintenance building across a parking lot is well within line of sight, while 450 feet indoors is a realistic ceiling once you're through several interior walls. Traffic is AES 128-bit encrypted either way.
8) Will the PDK Red 2 tell me if the backup battery is dying before a power outage takes the doors down?
Yes, that's the point of the supervised power circuit. The Red 2 monitors input voltage, output voltage, battery voltage, and overall controller health, so a degrading standby battery shows up as a reported condition rather than as a surprise the next time utility power drops. For an MRO or facilities team running unattended closets across a portfolio, that monitoring is what keeps a dead battery from becoming a service call after the fact.
9) Is the PDK Red 2 the right board for an existing PDK system, and what's the model number to order?
The Red 2 is the two-door expansion board for a PDK Red system, ordered as model R2E, MPN AHDS30RVFD. It's a hardwired controller in the R2 Series and it reports to a Cloud Node, which discovers it over Ethernet with no IP configuration.
