RCI 4305-09 32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the RCI 4305 electric strike fit my aluminum storefront frame?
The 4305 needs 1-1/2 inches of cut-out depth behind the faceplate, which is what most aluminum and wood frame profiles give you. The faceplate is 5-7/8 inches with round corners, so it drops into a standard round-corner ANSI prep of that length. Measure the depth available in your frame tube before you cut, since 1-1/2 inches is the requirement, not a range.
2) What locks does the RCI 4305 strike work with?
Cylindrical locks, narrowline aluminum locks, and centerline mortise locks all work with the 4305, including 3-piece anti-friction latch types and mortise exit devices. The latch cavity is enlarged specifically to take that spread of latch shapes. It accommodates a 3/4 inch latch projection, so check the throw on your lockset against that number before ordering.
3) Does the RCI 4305 unlock or stay locked when the power goes out?
Fail-safe. Cut the power and the 4305 releases, so the door can be pushed open from the outside. If your opening needs to stay secure during a power failure (an exterior perimeter door, a stockroom, an IT closet), fail-safe is the wrong choice and you want a fail-secure strike instead. Fail-safe is normally specified where a door has to free up on an alarm or power drop, and it must be on a supervised, dedicated supply.
4) Can I use the RCI 4305 on a fire rated door?
No. The 4305 is not fire rated. A fire door assembly needs a fail-secure, fire-rated electric strike that keeps the latch positively held at all times, so a fail-safe unit like this one cannot go on a labeled opening. Use it on non-rated commercial doors and specify a fire-rated fail-secure strike for anything with a label on the frame.
5) Is the RCI 4305 rated for a high traffic commercial entrance?
It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, the top grade for electric strikes, and carries both UL 294 access control and UL 1034 burglary-resistant listings. The anti-vibration construction is there to stop the strike being manipulated open by hammering or shaking the door, which is the common attack on a keeper in a storefront or a healthcare corridor.
6) Will the RCI 4305 latch my existing lockset, or do I need to change the lock?
If your latchbolt projects 3/4 inch or less and it is a cylindrical, narrowline aluminum, or centerline mortise latch, the 4305 takes it as-is and the lock stays. The widened cavity is what allows the mix, including 3-piece anti-friction mortise latches and mortise exit device latches. Deadbolts are outside what this strike is built for, so a deadbolted opening needs a different solution.
7) What door thickness does the RCI 4305 electric strike handle?
1-3/8 to 2-3/8 inches. That covers the standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door, older 1-3/8 inch interior doors, and the thicker leaves you see on some storefront and institutional openings, so one strike model can standardize a mixed set of doors across a building.
8) Do I order the RCI 4305 in 12 volt or 24 volt?
Both are offered: 12 VDC and 24 VDC. Match the strike to the power supply already feeding the opening rather than the reader or controller. On fail-locked models AC or DC input is acceptable, and the coil is not polarity conscious, so crossed wires at the terminals will not stop it working or damage the coil.
9) Is the RCI 4305 strike meant for residential use?
No, it is a commercial unit. The 4 Series strike is specified for building access control, retail, healthcare, schools, and government facilities, and it expects a low voltage power supply, a controller or reader, and a frame prep with 1-1/2 inches of depth behind the faceplate. On a house door none of that infrastructure is normally present.
10) Where do I get the frame cut-out template and wiring diagram for the RCI 4305?
RCI publishes installation instructions and a full 4 Series product catalog as PDFs on the 4305 product record, and those carry the prep dimensions and wiring detail you need before cutting the frame. Work from those rather than from a generic strike template, since the 5-7/8 inch round corner faceplate and 1-1/2 inch depth have to be cut to the printed prep.
