1) Is 300 lb holding force enough for a cabinet or small enclosure door?
That is exactly what the RCI 8375 Surface MicroMag is built for. It holds up to 300 lbf and is rated for single door applications on swinging doors of small enclosures, cabinets, and similar access points. For a full-size commercial perimeter or stairwell door you want a full-size mag lock in the 600 to 1200 lbf range, not this one.
2) What happens to the door if the power goes out?
It unlocks. The 8375 is fail-safe only, which is how every electromagnet works, and it is what lets it sit on an egress opening or tie into a fire alarm release. If your application requires the door to stay locked through a power failure, a mag lock is the wrong device and you need an electric strike or electrified lock specified fail-secure.
3) Can this be used on a fire-rated door assembly?
RCI lists the 8375 Surface MicroMag as fire rated, and because it releases on loss of power it drops open on an alarm release signal. Wire it through the fire alarm relay per your local AHJ and the egress hardware on the opening.
4) What hardware do I need to mount the RCI 8375 MicroMag?
It mounts with self-drilling TEC screws, so on hollow metal frames and armature plates you are drilling and driving in one step without tapping. You still supply the low-voltage power, the release device (card reader, keypad, push button or request-to-exit), and any fire alarm interface. The lock itself is not a complete access control system.

Single door. The 8375 is a one-lock, one-leaf unit. For a pair of doors you order two locks and size the power supply for both, since each draws up to 360mA at 12VDC.
6) Does the MicroMag need surge protection added at the power supply?
Not for the lock itself. Surge protection is built into the 8375, which covers the inductive kickback a magnet generates when it releases and protects the board from line fluctuation. Standard practice on the rest of the access control loop still applies.
