Record-USA HA9-102-39 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Record USA HA9 low energy operator work on a door that swings toward me, or do I need to specify handing?
Handing isn't a factor. The HA9 is non-handed, so the same operator covers a left or right hand door. What you do have to specify is push or pull side mounting, and the arm package differs between them. This one is configured pull side, which allows a pull reveal up to 2-3/8 inches. Push side mounting allows a reveal up to 14 inches. Measure from the face of the door to the face of the frame stop: if that reveal is more than 2-3/8 inches on a pull side application, the pull arm will not reach and you need the push configuration instead.
2) What power do I need to run to the door for a Record HA9 operator, and can it power the electric lock too?
Run 120 VAC to the header. The HA9 has an easy electrical connection box that ships prewired, which saves time in the field. For locking, there is a 24 VDC auxiliary output at 1/2 amp standard, with an optional upgrade to 1.1 amps, plus a 12/24 volt output for adding locking devices. Add up the draw of your electric strike or maglock before you order: if it exceeds 1/2 amp you want the 1.1 amp upgrade rather than a separate power supply.
3) Will a low energy operator like the HA9 reliably latch a door that has an electric strike and a stiff closer?
Two features cover that. Lock kick drives the door the last bit to guarantee a positive latch when it closes, which matters on fire doors and on any opening where the lock has to throw. Lock retry backs it up: if the door fails to close and lock, the operator reverses and tries again instead of leaving the opening unsecured. Both are selectable during setup. Extended closing torque is also built in specifically to push through stack pressure, which is what usually defeats a lock on a stairwell or vestibule door.
4) Can I reuse the existing Ditec arms if I'm replacing an old operator on the same door?
Yes. The HA9's cast alloy arms use the existing Ditec arm package in both push and pull configurations, so a Ditec arm already mounted on the door and shoe can carry over. The arms are cast alloy specifically to survive abuse from users and weather. Confirm your existing package matches the side you're mounting on, push or pull, since the reveal each one tolerates is different.
5) Can I automate a pair of doors with Record HA9 operators so they close in the right order?
Yes. A sync cable is included with pair operators so the two leaves close simultaneously or in sequence, which is what you need when the doors have an astragal and one leaf has to land before the other. Order two operators for the pair; each one is non-handed, so you are not ordering a left and a right.
6) Should I use a low energy automatic operator or just a power assist closer on an entrance that gets steady foot traffic?
The HA9 does both, which is why it gets specified where the use pattern isn't settled. In power assist mode it is adjusted to help a person who opens the door by hand, with manual force adjustable from 5 to 30 lbs. Push and go turns it into an automatic: someone pushes the door and the operator takes over and swings it open, no wall button needed. So you can install it as an assist and reconfigure to automatic later without changing hardware. Traffic rating is moderate, and Record lists it for schools, hospitals, retail, airports and offices.
7) How hard is a Record HA9 to commission once it's hung, and what does the installer have to set?
There is a one touch learn cycle: the operator measures the door's weight and conditions and sets its own open and close positions and speed at the press of a button, so you are not dialing in limits by hand. Sensors land on plug and play connections. What you do choose during setup is the safety behavior, stop on stall or reverse on obstruction, plus whether lock kick and opening delay are active. 8) How do I let staff hold an automatic entrance open or shut off the outside push plate after hours?
An on/off/hold open switch is standard on the HA9, and it can be configured to deactivate the exterior activation buttons, so the inside still works while the outside plate is dead. One finish: 689 clear anodized aluminum.
