Rockwood ROC-102-BTB5-US26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the hole spacing on the Rockwood 102 pull, and how far does it stand off the door?
Bolt holes are 5-1/2 inches center to center, with 1-1/2 inches of hand clearance between the bar and the door face and a total projection of 2-1/8 inches off the face. Those three numbers decide the retrofit: if you are replacing an existing pull, match the 5-1/2 inch CTC or you are drilling a new door. The 2-1/8 inch projection also tells you how much the pull eats into a corridor or a door swing path.
2) Does the Rockwood 102 BTB come as a pair for both sides of the door, or one pull only?
Back to back means two pulls, one on each face, bolted through to each other. That is what the BTB suffix and the mounting type number call out (102 with BTB and the mounting number). If you only want a pull on the pull side, that is a different order: Rockwood uses a C suffix for concealed mounting single pulls. Do not order BTB for a single-sided opening, you will pay for and receive two pulls.
3) My door is thinner than 1-3/4 inch - is the Rockwood 102 back-to-back set still the right pull?
The Rockwood 102 BTB ships with 1/4-20 x 2-1/2 inch thru bolts and finish washers sized for a standard 1-3/4 inch door, and Rockwood asks to be advised when the door thickness is other than 1-3/4 inch so the fasteners can be matched. For a thinner leaf, the Deltana OHP620 off-set handle pull is a back-to-back set that lists a door thickness range of 1-1/8 inch to 1-3/8 inch. The OHP620 is an offset handle rather than a straight bar, so the grip shape changes with it.
4) I need an offset pull instead of a straight one - what takes the place of a Rockwood 102?
The Rockwood 102 is a straight bar pull, so the grip runs parallel to the door face with no offset. For an offset grip, the ABH AB3310 is an offset flat end surface mount pull and the ABH AB3330 is an offset round end pull with custom length options. From Ives, the 8145EZHD is a 45 degree offset pull with heavy duty mounting hardware, described as ADA compliant, and the 8169 is a C style offset solid pull at 1 inch diameter with heavy duty mounting. Offset pulls change the hand clearance and the mounting hole pattern, so confirm the prep before swapping one in for a straight bar.
5) What back-to-back pull sets are there besides the Rockwood 102 BTB?
The Rockwood 102 in the BTB configuration mounts in pairs back to back with 1/4-20 x 2-1/2 inch thru bolts and finish washers for a standard 1-3/4 inch door. Other back-to-back sets include the Deltana OHP620 off-set handle pull, which lists a door thickness range of 1-1/8 inch to 1-3/8 inch, the Deltana SSPOBB24 24 inch modern offset back-to-back pulls, and the Deltana SSPORBB24 24 inch round offset back-to-back pulls. Those Deltana sets are long offset pulls, so they occupy far more of the stile than the 102 at 5-1/2 inch center-to-center.
6) I need a straight pull, not an offset one. What is the difference and which do I want?
A straight pull like the 102 runs the bar parallel to the door with posts at each end, so the grip is a single line and the hand pulls square. An offset pull angles the grip away from the face, which suits a door someone approaches at an angle or grabs while carrying something. If offset is what the drawing calls for, the ABH AB3310 is a flat end offset, the ABH AB3330 is a round end offset with custom length options, and the Ives 8169 is a C style offset in 1 inch diameter. For a plain door with a closer, the straight bar is the usual choice.
7) Are the mounting bolts included with the Rockwood 102 pull, or do I order them separately?
Fasteners come with it: 1/4-20 x 2-1/2 inch thru bolts and finish washers, sized for a 1-3/4 inch door. That is standard duty 1/4-20 mounting. Nothing else is needed to hang the pair on a prepped door, but the door has to be drilled at 5-1/2 inches center to center, and thru bolting means both faces get hardware, so nothing can conflict on the push side.
8) I need a longer pull than 5-1/2 inches for a glass-front or storefront entrance. What should I look at instead?
The 102 is a short pull, 5-1/2 inches center to center, which suits a door leaf with a closer and normal hand traffic, not a tall entrance bar. For a long back-to-back entrance pull, the Deltana SSPOBB24 and SSPORBB24 are 24 inch back-to-back sets, modern offset and round offset respectively. The ABH AB3330 offers custom length options. Match the pull length to the stile height the architect drew, then confirm the door is drilled for that spacing.
9) I want a pull on one side and a push plate on the other. Does the 102 work for that?
Order the single-pull version, not BTB. Back to back means a matched pull on each face bolted through the door, which leaves no room for a plate opposite. Rockwood's C suffix covers concealed mounting single pulls for exactly this. For the push side, the Trimco 1001-1 heavy duty push plate is 3 x 12 inches, the Trimco 1041 half-round is 8 x 16 inches, or the Trimco 1070 Series classic push/pull plates run 3-1/2 x 15 inches.
10) Can a push plate be used in place of a Rockwood 102 door pull?
No. The Rockwood 102 is a graspable bar pull with a 2-1/8 inch projection and 1-1/2 inch hand clearance, meant for the pull side of an opening. The Trimco 1001-1 is a 3 inch x 12 inch heavy duty push plate and the Trimco 1041 is an 8 inch x 16 inch half-round push plate; both are flat plates with no grip and serve the push side. The Trimco 1070 Series classic push/pull plates at 3-1/2 inch x 15 inch combine a plate with a pull, which is a different prep from a bare bar pull. On a pair of doors, the plate goes on one leaf and a pull like the 102 on the other.
11) Is a Cal-Royal PUL-175 cylinder pull the same thing as a Rockwood 102 door pull?
No. The Cal-Royal PUL-175 is a night latch cylinder pull, 3-1/2 inch height in stainless steel construction, which mounts around a rim cylinder on a night latch application. The Rockwood 102 is a plain straight bar pull with a 5-1/2 inch center-to-center and 1-1/2 inch clearance, with no cylinder cutout. If the door has a rim cylinder that needs to pass through the pull, the 102 will not accommodate it.
12) What pull works better than a Rockwood 102 on a restroom door where users avoid touching the handle?
The Trimco 1035 Ultimate Restroom Pull is a heavy duty pull built specifically for restroom openings, where the Rockwood 102 is a general purpose straight bar pull at 5-1/2 inch center-to-center with 1-1/2 inch clearance. If the restroom door also needs an ADA-conscious offset grip, the Ives 8145EZHD is a 45 degree offset pull described as ADA compliant with heavy duty mounting hardware.
13) I need a longer pull than the Rockwood 102 for a full-height glass or storefront door - what are the options?
The Rockwood 102 is a short straight bar at 5-1/2 inch center-to-center. For a long grip, the Deltana SSPOBB24 and SSPORBB24 are both 24 inch back-to-back offset pulls, the SSPOBB24 in a modern offset profile and the SSPORBB24 in a round offset profile, and the Deltana SSP1210 is a 12 inch contemporary pull for single side mounting. The ABH AB3330 offset round end pull is offered with custom length options if a specific overall length is required.
14) What is the stainless steel alternative to the brass Rockwood 102 pull?
The Rockwood 102 is brass, supplied here in 626 satin chrome. Where solid stainless is preferred, the ABH AB7200 is a solid stainless steel flat end pull handle at 7/8 inch diameter with through-bolt mounting, and the Cal-Royal PUL-175 is stainless steel construction, though it is a night latch cylinder pull rather than a plain bar. The AB7200 is the closer match in form to a straight bar pull.
15) What finish does the Rockwood 102 straight pull come in?
Satin chrome, 626. On a mixed opening that is the finish that matches most commercial lever trim, push plates, and closers already specified in 626, so the pull will not read as an odd piece against the rest of the door hardware. If the building is standardized on satin stainless 630 trim, 626 sits close but is not identical.
16) Is the Rockwood 102 pull suitable for residential doors, or is it commercial only?
It is a commercial pull in solid brass, and Rockwood hardware turns up in institutional buildings, offices, retail, schools, detention, sports facilities, hotels and restaurants. It works on a residential door if the leaf is 1-3/4 inches and drilled at 5-1/2 inch centers, but the styling is plain commercial. For a decorative residential entry, the Emtek Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, Baden, and Brisbane 8 inch pulls are the cast-detail alternatives.
