Rockwood ROC-105x70B-US32D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Rockwood 105x70B pull plate mount on a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes. The 105x70B ships with 1/4-20 x 2-1/4 inch thru bolts and finish washers sized for a standard 1-3/4 inch door, plus #6 x 5/8 inch oval head sheet metal screws for the plate. If your door is any other thickness, the thru bolt length has to be specified when ordering, since 2-1/4 inches won't pass through and still take the washer and nut on a thicker leaf.
2) Is the Rockwood 105x70B ANSI rated for commercial openings?
It is classified to ANSI A156.6 under type J405, the standard covering architectural door trim, and it is a commercial-grade item rather than a residential one. That A156.6/J405 call-out is what a spec writer or institutional buyer needs to see on a submittal.
3) What other pull plates come close to a 5-1/2 inch CTC pull if I can't use the Rockwood?
Trimco's 1012 is a cast tapered heavy duty pull plate with a 5.5 inch CTC pull, and the 1013 is a round heavy duty version also at 5.5 inch CTC, so both land on the same hole centers as the 105x70B. The Trimco 1010 Series runs a 5 inch CTC and the 1014 Series a 6 inch CTC, which means new holes if you are swapping onto an existing prep.
4) My doors are prepped for an 8 inch center pull. Is this the right Rockwood plate?
No. The 105x70B pull sits on 5-1/2 inch centers, so it will not pick up an 8 inch prep. For that spacing look at the Ives 8303 heavy duty pull plate, which mounts on 8 inch or 10 inch center-to-center.
5) I need a wider center-to-center pull than 5-1/2 inches on the same style plate. What should I look at?
The Rockwood 105x70B pull is fixed at 5-1/2 inch center-to-center. For wider spacing, the Ives 8303 is a heavy duty pull plate offered with 8 inch or 10 inch center-to-center mounting, and the Trimco 1014 half-round pull plate uses a 6 inch CTC pull. Wider CTC generally means a taller grip area for gloved or two-hand use on heavy entrance doors.
6) What finish does the Rockwood 105x70B come in, and will it match my other stainless trim?
One finish: 630, satin stainless steel (US32D), on a stainless steel substrate. That is the standard satin stainless used on most commercial push/pull, kick plate and exit device trim, so it will read as a match alongside other 630/US32D hardware in the same building.
7) Do I get a push plate with this, or do I have to order it separately?
The 105x70B is the pull side only, a pull mounted on a 3-1/2 by 15 inch plate. On a push/pull opening you order the matching push plate as a separate item. For reference, Delaney sells a 3-1/2 by 15 inch push plate that matches that same plate footprint, and a 4 by 16 inch push plate if you want a larger blank.
8) Is a thru-bolted pull plate like this worth it over screw-mounted pulls on high-traffic doors?
On a door that gets pulled thousands of times a week, yes. The 105x70B includes 1/4-20 thru bolts, so the pull load transfers through the door rather than into sheet metal screws that eventually strip. That is why this style shows up on institutional, school, office, retail, detention, hotel and restaurant openings. If you want another thru-bolted option, the Ives 8302 is a heavy duty pull plate built for through bolt mounting.
9) Can I use this Rockwood pull plate as the pull trim on an exit device?
The 105x70B is a standalone door-mounted pull plate, not exit device trim, so it is not the part for dogging or retracting a device. If you need a pull plate made to work with an exit device, the Detex P/PN Series pull plate is built for Detex Value Series exit devices.
10) The push side of my door needs a plate too. What pairs with the Rockwood 105x70B?
The Rockwood 105x70B is a pull plate only, so the push side needs a separate flat plate. Delaney offers a 3-1/2 inch by 15 inch push plate that matches the Rockwood plate's 3-1/2 by 15 inch footprint, and a 4 inch by 16 inch push plate if you want a larger push face. Emtek's Modern, Knoxville, and Petal series are sold as push and pull plate sets if you would rather source both sides from one decorative line.
11) What looks like a substitute for the Rockwood 105x70B but will not work on a standard swing door?
The Detex P/PN Series pull plate is built for Detex Value Series exit devices, so it is tied to that device rather than serving as a general-purpose door face pull. The Rockwood 105x70B is a stand-alone stainless steel straight pull plate built to ANSI A156.6, J405 for commercial openings. Flat push plates such as the Delaney 3-1/2 x 15 push plate also look similar in outline but have no pull handle.
12) For a high-traffic entrance, is there a through-bolted pull plate comparable to the Rockwood 105x70B?
Yes. The Ives 8302 is a heavy duty pull plate with through bolt mounting, and the Trimco 1010 Series is a cast heavy duty pull plate with a 5 inch center-to-center pull. The Rockwood 105x70B itself supplies 1/4-20 x 2-1/4 inch thru bolts with finish washers sized for a standard 1-3/4 inch door, so it can be through bolted as well; advise the door thickness if it is other than 1-3/4 inches.
