Rockwood ROC-137x70B-US32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What fasteners come with the Rockwood 137x70B pull plate and what door thickness are they sized for?
Two mounting methods ship with it: #6 x 5/8 inch oval head sheet metal screws, and 1/4-20 x 2-1/4 inch thru bolts with finish washers. The thru bolt length is cut for a standard 1-3/4 inch door. On a thicker door, or on anything other than 1-3/4 inches, the supplied bolts will be short and you need to specify the door thickness when ordering so the right length ships.
2) Does the Rockwood 137x70B pull plate meet ANSI/BHMA A156.6?
It's built to ANSI/BHMA A156.6 and carries the J405 type designation under that standard, which is the architectural door trim standard covering pulls and plates. That's the line an institutional spec writer is usually looking for on a submittal.
3) If the door already has a pull plate with a 5 inch or 6 inch grip spacing, what pull plate matches instead of the 5-1/2 inch Rockwood 137x70B?
For a 5 inch grip spacing, the Trimco 1010 series cast pull plate is built with a 5 inch center-to-center pull. For a 6 inch spacing, the Trimco 1014 series half-round pull plate uses a 6 inch center-to-center pull. The Rockwood 137x70B is set at 5-1/2 inch center-to-center, so it will not land on holes drilled for either of those. On a retrofit the center-to-center of the pull is the dimension that decides the swap, because it fixes where the through bolts pass through the door.
4) Should I thru bolt or screw mount a pull plate on a high traffic door?
Thru bolting is what holds up. A pull plate takes a straight pulling load, and sheet metal screws into a hollow metal or wood door face will work loose under heavy use. The 137x70B ships with 1/4-20 x 2-1/4 inch thru bolts and finish washers for exactly that reason, with #6 x 5/8 inch SMS as the lighter option for low traffic openings. On an entrance, a corridor door or anything in a school or hospital, use the thru bolts and pair the plate with a push plate on the opposite face so the bolts have something to land in.
5) Is the Rockwood 137x70B pull plate solid stainless or plated steel?
Stainless steel, cast, in 630 satin stainless (the finish also called US32D). Because the finish is the material and not a plating, scratches and cart strikes don't expose a different colored base metal underneath, and it holds up in wet or cleaned-down areas like restrooms and kitchens.
6) I need a beveled edge on my pull plate for a tight frame reveal. Does Rockwood offer that?
A heavy bevel version is available on the 137x70 pull plate, ordered by specifying HVBEV. Standard duty 1/4-20 mounting is the default if you don't call out anything else.
7) What's the difference between a pull plate and a push plate, and do I need both?
A pull plate has a handle on it and goes on the pull side of the door. A push plate is flat, with no handle, and goes on the swing side where people shove the door open. On a door with a closer and no latch trim, you normally order one of each: the 137x70B pull plate on the pull face, and a flat push plate of matching size and finish on the other. Ordering two pull plates leaves you with a handle on the push side that nobody uses and that catches on carts.
8) I need a bigger pull plate than 3-1/2 by 15 inches. What are my options?
Step up to a 4 x 16 inch plate. Delaney makes a 4 x 16 inch pull plate with a matching 4 x 16 inch push plate. If you need a wider hand spread rather than a bigger plate, the Ives 8303 is a heavy duty pull plate offered in 8 inch or 10 inch center-to-center, which is a two hand grip rather than the 5-1/2 inch single hand spread on the Rockwood 137x70B.
9) Can I use a standard pull plate as the trim on an exit device?
No. A general purpose pull plate like the Rockwood 137x70B mounts to the door face on its own fasteners and has no relationship to a panic device's trim prep. Exit device pull trim is made to match the device, for instance the Detex P/PN Series pull plate for Value Series exit devices. If there's a panic bar on the door, order the trim that belongs to that device.
10) Will the Rockwood 137x70B match other satin stainless door hardware already in my building?
It comes in 630 satin stainless (US32D), which is the most common commercial finish on hinges, exit devices, closers and locksets, so it lines up with a standardized 630 building. That's the only finish this pull plate is built in, so if your openings are brass, bronze or black, this is not the plate to match them.
11) Is the Rockwood 137x70B pull plate suitable for a house, or is it commercial only?
It's a commercial rated part, and Rockwood trim of this kind goes on institutional buildings, offices, retail, schools, detention, sports facilities, hotels and restaurants, and higher end homes. Nothing stops you putting it on a residence, but if you're after a decorative look for a house, Emtek's Knoxville, Modern, and Petal push and pull plate sets are the residential styled alternative, the Petal being lost wax cast bronze.
