Rockwood 853 26D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What screws come with the Rockwood 853 pull, and will they work on a 3/4 inch drawer front?
Fasteners supplied are #8-32 x 1 inch truss head machine screws. That 1 inch length suits a standard 3/4 inch face with the screw picking up the post; on a thicker front, or a drawer box with a doubled-up applied face, you will need longer #8-32 machine screws.
2) I need a pull for an appliance door or a cabinet edge, not a drawer front. Is the Rockwood 853 right?
No. The 853 is a face-mounted wire pull on 4 inch centers, sized for drawer and door fronts, and 4 inches of span will not carry a refrigerator or a range door. For an appliance door look at the Schaub 79-8 Steamworks 8 inch pull. For a sliding or pocket panel where nothing can stand proud of the face, the Schaub Sabre edge pulls come in 3, 4 and 5 inch centers.
3) What is the closest equivalent to the Rockwood 853 wire pull at the same 4 inch center-to-center spacing?
The Rockwood 853 is a solid wire cabinet pull drilled on 4 inch centers, so a replacement has to land on the same two holes. The Omnia 1968/102 is a forged solid brass modern cabinet pull with 4 inch center-to-center spacing, which drops onto the same hole pattern. The Trimco 562 series drawer pull is offered in 3-1/2 inch, 4 inch and 96mm center-to-center options, so the 4 inch option in that series also matches the existing bore. Both are two-hole drawer and cabinet pulls in the same duty as the 853, which is brass with a #8 - 32 x 1 inch truss head machine screw fastener.
4) What should I use if my cabinet drawers are already drilled on 3 inch centers instead of 4 inch?
The Rockwood 853 wire pull is fixed at 4 inch center-to-center, so a 3 inch bore will not take it without redrilling the drawer face. The Trimco 553 series drawer pull is built on 3 inch center-to-center spacing and uses the existing holes. The Trimco 562 series also lists a 3-1/2 inch center-to-center option if the fronts fall between the two. For a run of casework where the holes are already in the wood, matching the spacing is what keeps the job from becoming a refinishing job.
5) Is the Rockwood 853 wire pull solid brass or plated pot metal?
Solid brass through and through, plated to finish. On institutional casework, nurse stations and hotel millwork that matters, because a plated zinc pull is what fails first at the fastener boss when someone hooks a cart on it.
6) What finishes does the Rockwood 853 pull come in, and will it match my existing 626 lever trim?
Two finishes are offered: 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless. If your doors are already on 626 satin chrome lever trim, order the 626 pull and the casework will read as one package. 630 satin stainless is the closer match where the millwork sits next to stainless appliances or stainless push plates.
7) Does the Rockwood 853 cabinet pull meet ANSI/BHMA A156.9?
The 853 is certified to ANSI A156.9 under type number B02011, which is the cabinet hardware standard. Specifiers writing casework hardware into a schedule can cite that type number directly.
8) Can I get the Rockwood 853 wire pull in a center-to-center other than 4 inches?
Other center-to-center spacings are available on request. That is the route to take when you are matching an existing hole pattern across a building's casework and re-drilling hundreds of fronts is not on the table. If you would rather buy off the shelf, the Trimco 562 Series drawer pull is offered in 3-1/2 inch, 4 inch and 96mm centers, and the Trimco 553 Series in 3 inch.
9) What is the difference between a wire pull like the Rockwood 853 and a cabinet knob?
A wire pull spans two holes and gives you a bar to hook a whole hand or a gloved finger through, which is why it goes on drawers and larger doors; the 853 does that on 4 inch centers. A knob is a single-hole part you pinch, better on small doors and where you want minimal hardware. If a knob is what the job wants, the Orca Hardware Bachelor Collection round cabinet knob is a 1-1/4 inch diameter single-hole option, and the Orca Blackcomb square knob is 25mm.
10) Is the Rockwood 853 pull rated for commercial casework or is it a residential part?
Rockwood classes the 853 as residential duty. Rockwood hardware in general goes into institutional buildings, offices, retail, education, detention, sports facilities, hotels and restaurants, but if you are hanging hardware on high-cycle public casework, weigh that residential rating against a heavier bar pull such as the Deltana SBP35 solid brass square bar pull, which is listed as heavy-duty.
11) Is the Schaub 10011 Sabre a substitute for the Rockwood 853 since both are 4 inch center to center?
No. The Schaub 10011 is a 4 inch center-to-center Sabre edge pull, and an edge pull mounts on the edge or lip of a door or drawer rather than standing off the face. The Rockwood 853 is a face-mounted wire pull with a 4 inch center-to-center bore and a truss head machine screw through the drawer front. The shared 4 inch dimension does not make them interchangeable; the Schaub 10010 and 10012 are the same Sabre edge pull in 3 inch and 5 inch center-to-center. Specify an edge pull only where you want nothing projecting off the face.
12) I want a single-hole knob instead of a two-hole wire pull on these cabinet doors. What is the alternative?
The Rockwood 853 is a two-hole pull on 4 inch centers, so it needs a pair of bores. If you would rather drill once, the Orca Hardware CK-15030 is a round cabinet knob at 1-1/4 inch diameter and the CK-16030 is the round ring version of that same Bachelor Collection knob at 1-1/4 inch diameter. The Orca CK-17025 is the square knob in the Blackcomb Collection at 25mm diameter. Knobs are typical on doors and small drawers; the 853 pull gives a full hand grip on wider drawer fronts.
13) Which cabinet pulls are solid brass like the Rockwood 853?
The Rockwood 853 wire pull is a brass part offered in 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless finishes. If solid brass construction is the specification you are matching across a job, the Deltana SBP35 is a heavy-duty solid brass modern square bar pull at 3-1/2 inch, and the Omnia 1968/102, 1969, 1970 and 1971 modern cabinet pulls are all forged solid brass. The Orca CK-12001 T-pull bar, by contrast, is a steel bar in satin nickel at 2 inch bar width, so it is the one to skip if the submittal calls out brass.
14) Does the Rockwood 853 meet the same standard as the decorative cabinet pull lines, and when would I choose one of those instead?
The Rockwood 853 wire pull is built to ANSI A156.9, type B02011, and is a plain solid wire profile in satin chrome or satin stainless. Where the casework calls for a decorative profile rather than a standards-referenced pull, the Emtek Schaub Collection covers the Bar, Alexander and Art Deco cabinet pulls and the Emtek 8405 Select cabinet pull, all catalogued as cabinet knob/pull function. For a millwork package specified to A156.9 across a facility, the 853 is the one carrying that reference.
15) Is the Schaub 79-8 Steamworks pull an option in place of the Rockwood 853?
The Schaub 79-8 Steamworks is an 8 inch appliance pull, sized and rated for refrigerator and dishwasher panels rather than for standard drawer fronts. The Rockwood 853 is a 4 inch center-to-center cabinet pull in brass. Use the 79-8 where an appliance panel needs a full-length grip, and keep the 853 on the cabinet and drawer runs; they are not drilled or scaled alike.
