Rockwood ROC-SD1230-US32D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is a Rockwood SD1230 protector bar and where does it mount on a door?
The SD1230 is a standard duty protector bar, a stainless steel bar that mounts off the door face and stands proud of it to take the hits that would otherwise land on the door and its trim. Projection is 3-1/4 inches, so the bar holds carts, gurneys and hand trucks that far off the surface. Mounting holes are 8 inches center to center.
2) What hole pattern do I have to drill for the Rockwood SD1230 protector bar?
Drill on 8 inch centers. That is the fixed center-to-center dimension of the SD1230 mounting points, so if you are replacing an existing bar, measure the old hole spacing first; anything other than 8 inches means new holes in the door.
3) How does the Rockwood SD1230 protector bar fasten to the door, and does it work on a hollow metal door?
It ships with #10-24 x 1 inch flat head machine screws and a sex bolt. The machine screws thread into tapped holes in a hollow metal door or a reinforced door face; the sex bolt gives you a through-bolt option where there is nothing solid to tap, which is the usual answer on a wood or mineral core door.
4) Will a protector bar clear the lever or panic device on my door?
The SD1230 stands 3-1/4 inches off the door face. Compare that against the projection of whatever hardware sits on the same face: if your lever, pull or exit device pushes out further than 3-1/4 inches, the bar will not shield it and the trim keeps taking the impact. On doors where the operating hardware sits shallower than that, the bar takes the hit first.
5) Is the Rockwood SD1230 protector bar stainless steel, and what finish does it come in?
Stainless steel throughout, in 630 satin stainless (US32D). That is the one finish it is made in, and it is the same satin stainless that most commercial pulls, push plates and kick plates are specified in, so it matches out of the box.
6) Do I need a protector bar or a kick plate on a door that keeps getting damaged by carts?
They solve different problems. A kick plate or armor plate is flat against the door and protects the door face itself from scuffing at the bottom. The SD1230 protector bar projects 3-1/4 inches out from the door, so it keeps carts and equipment from ever contacting the face or the door hardware in the first place. If the damage is on the door skin, plate it. If carts are hitting the lever, the pull, or the door edge, the bar is the part that takes the blow.
7) Can I use one SD1230 protector bar to cover both sides of a door?
No. Each SD1230 protects one face of the door. Doors that take traffic from both directions need a bar on each side, and each set of mounting points is on 8 inch centers, so plan the through-bolt locations so the two sides do not fight each other for the same holes.
8) Is the Rockwood SD1230 protector bar meant for commercial use or residential doors?
It is a commercial product. Rockwood trim of this kind goes on institutional buildings, offices, retail, educational, detention, sports facilities, hotels and restaurants, plus higher end residences. Standard duty means normal traffic abuse rather than the heaviest cart and gurney traffic in a hospital corridor or a loading dock.
