Rockwood ROC-SD1250-US32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What hole spacing do I need to drill for a Rockwood SD1250 protector bar?
Mounting centers are 8 inches. Lay out two holes 8 inches apart on the door and drill through, since the bar fastens with #10-24 x 1 flat head machine screws into sex bolts that pass through the door. If you are replacing an existing bar or pull drilled to different centers, the old holes will not line up and you will be patching or picking a bar that matches your existing spacing.
2) Will the SD1250 protector bar work on a hollow metal or aluminum door, or does it need a wood door?
Through-bolting is the mounting method here, so the door has to be drilled all the way through: the #10-24 x 1 flat head machine screws thread into sex bolts that sandwich the door. That works on hollow metal, wood and aluminum doors alike, but it rules out any opening where you cannot drill through the leaf or where the far face must stay unbroken. Sex bolt mounting is also what makes it hold up on a high traffic door, since the load goes through the door rather than into surface threads.
3) Does the 4-1/4 inch projection on a protector bar cause a problem in a corridor or a tight vestibule?
Yes, and it is the number to check before ordering. The bar projects 4-1/4 inches from the door face, so on an out-swinging door in a narrow corridor or on a pair of doors that swing toward each other it can foul the adjacent leaf, a wall return, or reduce the clear corridor width. Measure the swing path first. If you only need the trim covered and cannot give up the projection, a flat door plate or edge guard is the part to look at instead.
4) What is a Rockwood SD1250 protector bar and what does it actually protect?
The SD1250 is a standard duty door pull protector bar, a stainless steel bar that mounts over or alongside door trim to take the abuse instead of the hardware behind it. It stands 4-1/4 inches off the door face, so it catches carts, luggage and equipment before they reach the trim. Typical use is institutional and high traffic openings: schools, offices, retail, hotels, restaurants and detention.
5) What finish does the Rockwood SD1250 come in, and will it match my other stainless door hardware?
One finish: 630, satin stainless steel (US32D). That is the standard satin stainless used on most commercial door hardware, so it matches satin stainless pulls, push plates, kick plates and exit device trim on the same opening. It will not match a polished stainless (629) or a brass or bronze suite. The bar is solid stainless steel, not plated, so wear at the contact points does not expose a different base metal underneath.
6) Is a protector bar the right choice, or should I be using a kick plate or armor plate?
Different jobs. A kick plate or armor plate lies flat on the door and protects the door face from cart and foot impact. The SD1250 protector bar stands 4-1/4 inches proud of the face, so its job is to keep carts and equipment from ever contacting the pull, lever or exit trim mounted on that door. If your damage is scuffed and dented door skin, plate it. If your damage is bent pulls and broken trim, the bar is what stops that, and plenty of high traffic openings get both.
7) Do I need to order fasteners separately for a Rockwood protector bar?
No. The SD1250 comes with #10-24 x 1 flat head machine screws and sex bolts, which is the complete through-bolt set for a standard commercial door. What you do need on site is a drill and bit sized for the sex bolt barrel, and access to both faces of the door to set the assembly.
8) Is the Rockwood SD1250 a commercial grade part or is it meant for residential doors?
Commercial. Rockwood specifies the SD1250 for institutional buildings, offices, retail, educational, detention, sports facilities, hotels and restaurants, along with higher end residences. The standard duty designation is Rockwood's lighter tier within the protector bar family, so for a receiving door, a kitchen door, or anywhere carts hit the same spot all day, look at a heavy duty bar rather than the SD line.
