Satco Lighting S11397 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What incandescent MR16 does this 4.5W LED replace?
It's a 35W halogen MR16 replacement, putting out 360 lumens at 4.5 watts. Same 12V GU5.3 bi-pin fitting as the halogen it comes out of, so it drops into the existing socket.
2) Will this Satco MR16 LED work on my existing low voltage dimmer and transformer?
The lamp itself is dimmable and draws 0.375A at 12V, 60Hz. The catch on any LED retrofit is the transformer: a 4.5W lamp is a very small load, so a magnetic or electronic transformer sized for 35W halogens may not see enough load to dim smoothly or may drop out at the bottom of the range. If you're relamping a whole run, test one head on the circuit before committing the building.
3) What does 5000K look like, and will it match the other bulbs in my building?
5000K is daylight white, a crisp blue-white rather than the warm yellow of a halogen. It will visibly mismatch 2700K or 3000K lamps in the same space, so if you're relamping part of a ceiling grid you want the whole run at 5000K. Color rendering is 80 CRI, and the color temperature is fixed, not field selectable.
4) Is a 40 degree beam the right spread for general recessed downlighting or is it too narrow?
40 degrees is a flood beam, which is the usual pick for general ceiling downlights and wall-wash spacing rather than tight accent work. If you're punching light onto a single piece of art or merchandise, you'd want a narrow spot instead; for even coverage across a room or corridor the 40 degree spread is the one to use.
5) Can I use this MR16 LED in a bathroom, covered porch, or kitchen hood?
Damp location rated, so enclosed bathrooms, covered exterior soffits and similar damp spots are fine. It is not wet rated, so don't put it anywhere subject to direct rain or spray. Burning position is universal, so it can point up, down, or sideways without affecting life.
6) Is the Satco S11397 DLC listed for utility rebates?
It is not DLC approved, so it won't qualify under rebate programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is FCC compliant and lawful for sale in California.
7) How long will these Satco MR16 LEDs last before maintenance has to relamp?
Rated for 25,000 hours. Running 12 hours a day that's roughly 5.7 years per lamp, which is why these go into hard-to-reach track and recessed heads in hospitality and multi-family common areas instead of halogens.
8) Does this MR16 have an exposed LED array or a covered lens?
It's lensed, with a plastic lens over the array, so you're not looking at bare diodes. The housing is a black finish, which is worth knowing if your existing heads are silver or white and the lamp body shows below the trim ring.
