Satco Lighting S16439 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Satco S16439 T8 LED fit standard bi-pin T8 sockets?
No. The S16439 uses a Recessed Double Contact HO/VHO base, not the medium bi-pin base found on standard 4-foot T8 fixtures. It only drops into fixtures wired for recessed double contact lampholders. If your sockets are bi-pin, this is the wrong lamp for that fixture.
2) Does the Satco S16439 work with the existing fluorescent ballast, or does the ballast have to come out?
The ballast has to go. This is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the fixture must be rewired to feed line voltage straight to the lampholders. It runs on 120V to 277V at 50/60Hz, which covers both residential and commercial circuits, and it can be wired single ended or double ended. Rewiring is electrician work and the fixture should be labeled as converted once it is done.
3) How do you set the color temperature on the Satco S16439 CCT selectable T8?
It is a field selectable lamp with three color points: 4000K, 5000K and 6500K. Output shifts slightly with the setting, 4500 lumens at one point, 4650 at another and 4400 at the third, with 83 CRI throughout. For a facility standardizing corridors or a warehouse, that means one part number can match 4000K office areas and 5000K shop areas off the same shelf.
4) Can the Satco S16439 32W LED tube be put on a dimmer?
No. The S16439 is non dimmable and has no three way function. On a dimmed circuit expect flicker or failure, so if the space needs dimming you want a dimmable LED tube or a driver based retrofit instead of this lamp.
5) What is the difference between single ended and double ended wiring on this ballast bypass LED tube?
Single ended means line and neutral both land at one end of the lamp, with the other end holding the tube only. Double ended means line goes to one end and neutral to the other, which is the wiring most old fluorescent fixtures already resemble. The S16439 accepts either, so you can pick whichever matches the fixture wiring you are working with instead of buying two different lamps.
6) Can this LED T8 be used in a parking garage or outdoor canopy fixture?
Indoor only. The lamp carries a damp location rating, so an enclosed damp interior space like a kitchen, locker room or covered interior bay is within spec, but it is not rated for wet locations or exterior exposure to rain.
7) Can the Satco S16439 be mounted vertically or in a sign fixture?
Burning position is universal, so the lamp can be run horizontal, vertical or at any angle without affecting rated life. Light distribution is a full 360 degrees around the tube, so it behaves like the fluorescent it replaces rather than throwing in one direction only, which matters in indirect and open strip fixtures.
8) Is the Satco S16439 DLC listed for utility rebates?
No, it is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify for rebate programs that require DesignLights Consortium listing. It is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant, which covers California energy code documentation and electromagnetic interference requirements.
9) How many of these 32W LED tubes can I put on one 20A circuit?
Draw is listed at 0.267A down to 0.116A across the 120V to 277V range, the higher figure at the low end of the voltage range. At 120V, 32 watts per lamp means current adds up quickly on a long run, so size the branch circuit off the 0.267A figure when the fixtures are on 120V and off the lower figure on 277V.
10) Is the Satco S16439 glass or plastic, and will the light be glary?
The tube uses a plastic lens with a frost finish and a polycarbonate base, so there is no glass to shatter in a shop, gym or food area and the frosted lens diffuses the diodes rather than leaving them visible as hot spots.
