Satco Lighting S39905 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I drop the Satco S39905 T8 LED tube into my existing fluorescent fixture without rewiring?
No. The S39905 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, which means the fluorescent ballast has to be removed and line voltage wired directly to the sockets. It takes either single-ended or double-ended wiring. If you want a lamp that runs on the existing ballast with no fixture work, you need a Type A (ballast compatible) tube instead.
2) What voltage can the Satco 17W T8 LED tube be wired to?
It runs on any line voltage from 120V to 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp works on 120V residential circuits and 277V commercial lighting branch circuits. Current draw is 0.142A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.061A at the high end.
3) Does the 3500K color temperature of this Satco tube match the other fluorescent tubes in my building?
3500K is neutral white, warmer than the 4000K and 5000K tubes common in newer commercial spaces and cooler than 3000K. If your existing lamps are marked 835 or 3500K, this matches. The S39905 is a fixed 3500K lamp, not field selectable, so mixing it into a row of 4000K tubes will read visibly different. CRI is 82.
4) Can I use this T8 LED tube in a parking garage or covered exterior fixture?
Damp location rated, and listed for indoor or outdoor use, so covered exterior soffits, canopies and parking structures are fine as long as the fixture itself keeps direct water off the lamp. It is not wet rated, so skip fully exposed locations. Burning position is universal, so it can be mounted horizontally, vertically or at any angle.
5) Will a 17W LED tube at 2100 lumens be bright enough to replace a 32W fluorescent T8?
The S39905 puts out 2100 lumens on 17 watts and is rated equivalent to a 90W incandescent. On a four-lamp troffer that is roughly 8,400 lumens, which covers most general office and corridor lighting. Light spreads over a 210 degree beam angle, so it throws like a tube rather than a directional lamp. For high-bay or task areas where you were already short on light, step up to a higher lumen tube.
6) Is the Satco S39905 DLC listed for utility rebates?
Yes, the S39905 is DLC approved, which is what most utility prescriptive rebate programs require for linear LED replacement lamps. It is also FCC compliant and lawful for sale in California.
7) Can I put the Satco S39905 on a dimmer or a three-way switch?
No. The S39905 is not a three-way lamp, and it is a fixed output ballast bypass tube. Wire it to a standard line voltage on/off switch. If you need dimming in the space, specify a dimmable LED tube with a compatible driver or dimming system.
8) Is this a glass or plastic LED tube, and does that matter for my facility?
The S39905 uses a glass lens and glass base with a gloss white finish. Glass tubes resist yellowing and typically cost less, but for gyms, kitchens, schools or anywhere impact or shatter is a concern, a plastic or coated shatterproof T8 is the safer specification.
