Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX70P BRK 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage ALX70 classroom lock actually work day to day?
The ALX70 is an ANSI F84 classroom function. The key in the outside lever locks or unlocks the outside lever, so a teacher or staff member controls the room from the corridor side with a key. The latchbolt is deadlocking, and the inside lever is always free, so anyone inside can get out without a key or a thumbturn. There is no way to lock the door from inside, which is what separates classroom function from classroom security or storeroom.
2) Can I get the Schlage ALX70 with a 2-3/8 inch backset instead of 2-3/4?
Yes. The lock ships standard with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch (part 47267042, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner face), but 2-3/8 inch backset deadlatches are selectable at order: 47267051 with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 square corner face, 47267052 with a 1 x 2-1/4 square corner, and 47267054 with a 1 x 2-1/4 round corner. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing bore to know which one you need.
3) Will the ALX70 latch into the strike prep already in my frame?
Depends which prep you have. Standard is the 47267101 ANSI strike, no box, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame is prepped for a T-strike instead, the 10-013 square corner T-strike with dust box, 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inches, can be substituted in either a 1-1/8 inch or 1-1/2 inch lip length. Pick the lip so it clears the frame face and stop without sticking out into the opening.
4) What is Vandlgard on the ALX70 and can I turn it off?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely when the lock is secured, so the chassis does not take the abuse when somebody yanks or hangs on a locked lever. On the ALX70 it is field selectable, and it is field reversible back to non-Vandlgard locked lever engagement if your spec calls for a rigid locked lever. You set it on site, not at order.
5) Which cylinder options does the Schlage ALX70 come in, and can I use my own small format cores?
Four cylinder choices: P, a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway; L, less conventional cylinder so you supply your own; B, prepped for small format interchangeable core less core; and J, prepped for full size interchangeable core less core. The chassis accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats, and using Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders gives high security keying. If you are running a BEST style SFIC system already, order the B option and install your own cores.
6) Is the Schlage ALX70 fire rated for a labeled classroom door?
It is UL/cUL listed. All locks carry a 3-hour A label rating for 4 x 8 or 4 x 10 foot single doors and 8 x 8 foot pairs, and a 90-minute rating on 8 x 10 foot pair doors when ordered with the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch options. The lock also meets ADA requirements and complies with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements.
7) Is a Grade 2 lock enough for a school classroom door, or should I spend up to Grade 1?
The ALX70 is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, and is rated heavy duty with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs. For a typical classroom door it holds up. Where you are on a high traffic corridor or a spec that calls out Grade 1 outright, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lock is a Grade 1 cylindrical classroom function with a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range, or step up within Schlage to the ND Series Grade 1 locks, which the ALX Series suites with.
8) Does the ALX70 give teachers a way to lock the door from inside the room during a lockdown?
No, and this matters. Classroom function on the ALX70 locks and unlocks only by key from the corridor side; the inside lever is always free and there is no inside locking control. If your district requires locking from inside the room, you need a classroom security function instead, such as the Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 classroom security cylindrical lever, which fits 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
9) What is a direct cross for the Schlage ALX70 classroom lever if I need a Grade 2 classroom function in a Schlage C keyway?
The Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever in a 6-pin Schlage C keyway, keyed different, with a 2-3/4 inch backset - the same backset the ALX70 ships with as standard. The ALX70 is an ANSI F84 classroom function, Grade 2, non-handed, with the key in the outside lever locking and unlocking that lever while the inside lever stays free. The AG03 gives you the same opening function in the same keyway family, so it can be worked into an existing Schlage C master key system the same way. The ALX70 adds the field selectable Vandlgard feature and a choice of conventional, SFIC or FSIC cylinder prep.
10) We need classroom security function, where the inside lever can also lock the outside lever. Does the ALX70 do that?
No. The Schlage ALX70 is a classroom function: the key in the outside lever locks or unlocks the outside lever, and there is no inside keyed or thumbturn lockdown. For a lockdown from inside the room, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom security lock is the Grade 1 clutching keyed lever built for that function, on doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch thick. Classroom and classroom security look alike on a door but are different functions, so confirm which one the life safety plan calls for before ordering.
11) Do I have to specify handing when ordering a Schlage ALX70 lever lock?
No handing to specify. The ALX70 is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand openings. That is useful if you are stocking a truck or buying spares for a building with doors swinging both ways.
12) I have Schlage ND Series locks on the rest of the building. Will ALX70 levers match them?
Yes, that is the point of the design. The ALX lever offering is meant to suit the Schlage ND Series Grade 1 locks, and ALX suites with ND, which adds 15 more functions plus 4 electrified options. So you can run ALX70 classroom locks on the standard classroom doors and ND where you need Grade 1 or electrified openings, and the trim reads as one family down the corridor.
13) Can I order several ALX70 classroom locks keyed alike, and do keys come with them?
Yes. Keying is selected at order: keyed different is standard, keyed alike is available for multiple locks on one key, and there is a none option when you are buying a less-cylinder configuration and supplying your own cores. A key code can be entered on the order if you are matching an existing system. Keyed locks include 2 keys.
14) Can I change an ALX70 classroom lock to a different function later without buying a whole new lock?
Yes. The ALX chassis is modular, one chassis fits all functions and cores, and the patent pending chassis design allows quick in-field function setup. So a facility repurposing a room can move between ALX functions, for example the ALX50 entrance/office (F82), ALX80 storeroom (F86), ALX40 privacy (F76) or ALX10 passage (F75), using function and lever kits rather than a full replacement lock. That also cuts what a distributor or locksmith has to carry as truck stock.
15) What is the difference between the Schlage ALX70 classroom lock and a storeroom lock?
Classroom function on the ALX70 means the outside lever is unlocked or locked by key and stays that way until someone keys it back, so staff can leave a room open through the day. A storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked at all times and the key only retracts the latch, which is what you want on mechanical and supply rooms. Within the same family that is the ALX80, ANSI F86. Cross brand, comparable storeroom levers include the Hager 2580 Grade 2 with the Withnell lever, 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG05 Grade 2 storeroom lockset, 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
16) The door does not need to lock at all - what takes the place of the ALX70?
Use a passage lever. The Schlage ALX70 is a keyed single cylinder classroom lock and ships with two keys, so it is more lock than an always-open door needs. Among Grade 2 passage levers, the Falcon B101 is a non-handed medium duty cylindrical passage lock, the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage lever in the Withnell design for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Arrow GL01 is a Grade 2 non-keyed Sierra lever passage lock for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. All three latch the door without keying it.
17) For an office door where occupants lock and unlock with a button, is the ALX70 the right pick?
Not usually. The ALX70 classroom function has a key cylinder outside and a push/turn button inside, but the key in the outside lever is what controls the outside lever locking. For a standard entrance/office door, the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever in entry/office function, and the Cal-Royal AG00 is a Grade 2 entrance lever in a 6-pin Schlage C keyway with a 2-3/8 inch backset for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Schlage's own entrance/office function in the same series is the ALX50, ANSI F82.
18) Is a Grade 3 residential lever an acceptable substitute for the ALX70 on a commercial door?
They are not the same class of lock. The Schlage ALX70 is a commercial Grade 2 cylindrical lock rated heavy duty, tested under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000 Grade 2 and UL/cUL listed for A label fire doors. Grade 3 levers such as the Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance/office lever for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Callan Artino entrance leverset, or the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever sit a full grade below that cycle and strength rating. On a rated or high-traffic commercial opening the specified grade is what governs.
19) What is the difference between the ALX70 and a heavy duty Grade 1 vandal resistant lever like the Corbin Russwin CL3110?
Function first: the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a passage/closet function, so it does not lock at all, while the Schlage ALX70 is a keyed classroom lock. On construction, the CL3110 is Grade 1 vandal resistant, fire rated, for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. The ALX70 is Grade 2 with a field selectable Vandlgard feature that lets the outside lever rotate freely when locked, and it is field reversible back to non-Vandlgard engagement. If you want both a keyed function and Grade 1, look at a Grade 1 keyed lock rather than the CL3110.
20) Can I use a keypad lever like the Delaney LP250 in place of the ALX70 to stop issuing keys?
Only if the opening does not have to run on your key system. The Schlage ALX70 is a non-electronic mechanical lock that accepts all Schlage cylinders plus five competitive cylinder formats, and can be ordered with conventional 6-pin C keyway, SFIC less core, or FSIC less core. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set in passage function for 1-1/8 to 2 inch doors. Neither carries a classroom function on a master keyed cylinder, so a keypad changes how the room is controlled, not just how it is opened.
21) I need a matching dummy lever on the inactive leaf of a pair where the active leaf has an ALX70. What are my options?
Within the same Schlage family the match is the ALX170 single dummy trim or the ALX172 double dummy trim, which share the ALX lever designs including Boardwalk. If the pair is being rehardwared in another line, the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is a Grade 2 non-keyed single dummy trim and the BEST 9K Series 1DT is the Grade 1 heavy duty equivalent. Dummy trim does not latch, so it belongs only on the leaf that is held by flush bolts.
22) For a patient room or utility closet in a healthcare facility, is the ALX70 the right function?
Those doors usually call for asylum or institutional function, where both levers are keyed and neither is free. The ALX70 leaves the inside lever always free for immediate egress, which is what a classroom door wants but not what a secured utility or asylum opening wants. The Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 asylum function cylindrical lock with a ball knob and conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder, and the Dexter C1000 asylum is the Grade 1 F87 version for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors.
23) We run Yale and Accentra hardware. Can I keep one key system if I add ALX70 locks?
Yes, from either direction. The Schlage ALX70 accepts all Schlage cylinders plus five competitive cylinder formats and is offered less conventional cylinder, less SFIC core and less FSIC core so you can install your own cores. Going the other way, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware. Between the two you can standardize a building on one keyway without replacing every lock chassis.
24) If the classroom door needs an electrified lever tied to access control, what replaces the ALX70?
The ALX70 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock, so it cannot be tied to a card reader or fire alarm release. The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever at 12V AC/DC for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, available with the NZ lever and D rose. Fail safe means the lever unlocks on power loss, so confirm that is the behavior the life safety plan wants before specifying it in place of a keyed classroom lock.
25) What finishes does the Schlage ALX70 Boardwalk lever come in?
Ten: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. In schools and healthcare 626 satin chrome is the usual standard, and 626AM is the same look with an antimicrobial coating for patient rooms and clinics.
26) What is the Schlage ALX70 lock body made of?
Zinc and steel, with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs. The spindle is deep drawn with 5 points of lever engagement, which is what keeps the Boardwalk lever from drooping or wobbling after heavy use. Captured screws in the latch, strike and inside spring cage mean no loose small parts to drop during installation.
