Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX70P OME 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ALX70 classroom function actually do when someone locks it?
Classroom function (ANSI F84) means the key works from the outside only. Turning the key in the outside lever locks or unlocks that lever, and there is no button or thumbturn inside for a teacher or student to fumble with. The inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room can walk out at any time whether the outside is locked or not. The deadlocking latchbolt stops the latch being carded once the door is shut.
2) Can I lock the classroom door from inside the room with the ALX70?
No. The ALX70 is keyed from the outside only, so a teacher has to step into the corridor with a key to lock the door. If lockdown from inside the room is the requirement, this is the wrong function; a classroom security lock with a second cylinder on the inside is what that job needs. The Dexter C1000 Series is offered in a Classroom Security function for exactly that scenario.
3) What cylinder options does the ALX70 come in, and can I get it less core for my own keying?
Four cylinder choices. P is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, ready to key. B comes prepped for a small format interchangeable core, less core. J comes prepped for a Schlage full size interchangeable core, less core. L ships less conventional cylinder for facilities that pin their own. Keyed different is standard, keyed alike is available for multiple locks, and the ALX chassis accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats.
4) Is the Schlage ALX70 fire rated for a labeled door?
Yes, and it is UL/cUL listed. The listing covers 3-hour A label fire doors up to 4 x 8 feet or 4 x 10 feet single, and 8 x 8 feet pairs. For 8 x 10 feet pairs the rating is 90 minutes, and that one requires the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option rather than the standard latch. It also carries ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000 Grade 2 certification.
5) Does the ALX70 meet ADA and the barrier-free lever requirements for a school or public building?
The ALX Series meets ADA requirements, and the Omega lever is a lever rather than a knob, which is the operable-part requirement that matters. It is also compliant with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements. For California, all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code.
6) What classroom lever lock should I use on an opening that needs a Grade 1 chassis instead of Grade 2?
The Dexter C1000 Series classroom cylindrical lever lock is a Grade 1 keyed classroom lock with a clutching lever and a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. The Schlage ALX70 is a Grade 2 classroom lock that fits 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors with minimal chassis adjustment, so the door prep expectation is the same range while the chassis rating differs.
7) Is a classroom security lock the same thing as a classroom lock?
No. The Schlage ALX70 is a classroom function lock, ANSI F84: the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key from the outside, and the inside lever is always free. The Dexter C1000 Series Classroom Security lever is a separate classroom security function, a Grade 1 keyed clutching lever built for locking the outside lever from inside the room. If the specification calls for locking the door without stepping into the corridor, the classroom security function is the one to order.
8) If the door only needs to stay locked at all times with key entry, what do I order instead of a classroom lock?
A storeroom function lever is the one for that opening. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. The Schlage ALX70 is a classroom function lock, where the key in the outside lever locks or unlocks that lever rather than holding it locked as a permanent state.
9) The door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches. What lever lock covers that opening?
The Schlage ALX70 accommodates 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors with minimal chassis adjustment, so a thicker leaf needs a different chassis. The Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock rated 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch with a fire rating, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 vandal resistant passage lever covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch and is fire rated. Both of those are passage function, so a keyed opening in that thickness range needs the function checked against the schedule before ordering.
10) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage ALX70 classroom lever?
No handing to specify. The ALX70 is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand doors and a locksmith carrying it as truck stock does not need to guess before the site visit.
11) What is Vandlgard on the ALX70 and would I want it turned on?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely when the lock is secured, so the force of someone yanking or hanging on the lever goes nowhere instead of into the chassis. That is what you want in a school corridor, a dorm, or any opening that takes abuse. It is field selectable and field reversible on the ALX70, so the same lock can be converted to conventional locked-lever engagement without buying different hardware.
12) Is a Grade 2 lock like the ALX70 enough for a school classroom, or should I be buying Grade 1?
Grade 2 with heavy duty construction covers most classroom, office and multi-family openings. Where the traffic genuinely warrants Grade 1, the ALX suites with the Schlage ND Series, which shares the lever designs and adds 15 more functions plus 4 electrified options, so you can run ND on the high-traffic openings and ALX on the rest without the levers looking different. Cross-brand Grade 1 classroom options include the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lock, rated for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
13) I want every lock in the building on one key. Can the ALX70 be keyed alike with the rest of my order?
Yes. Keyed alike is a selectable option for multiple locks, and you can supply a key code with the order; keyed different is the standard. Two keys come with the lock. If the site runs interchangeable cores, order the B (small format) or J (full size) prep less core and pin them into your existing system instead.
14) Can I convert an ALX passage or privacy lock to classroom function later without buying a new lock?
Yes, that is what the modular ALX chassis is for. One chassis fits all functions and cores, and the patent pending design allows in-field function set up, so a facility repurposing a room can change function without replacing hardware. The keyed functions in the family are ALX50 entrance/office (F82), ALX53 entrance (F109), ALX70 classroom (F84) and ALX80 storeroom (F86); non-keyed are ALX10 passage (F75), ALX40 privacy (F76), ALX44 hospital privacy, and ALX170/ALX172 dummy trim.
15) How is a classroom lock different from a storeroom lock, and which one do I want on an office door?
A storeroom lock stays locked all the time and the key only retracts the latch for entry, so the door is never left unsecured. Classroom function, like the ALX70, lets the key leave the outside lever unlocked so the room can be open during the day and locked at the end of it. For a private office where the occupant wants to lock up from inside, neither is right; the entrance/office function is the one, offered as the ALX50 in the same series.
16) What lever lock handles a detention or utility room where the key must work from both sides?
That is asylum or institution function. The Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock is a Grade 1 ANSI F87 cylindrical lock for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 heavy duty asylum cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. The Schlage ALX70 is ANSI F84 classroom, with the key cylinder on the outside only and the inside lever always free for immediate egress.
17) What keyed lever do I use on an office door where the occupant needs to lock it from inside?
An entrance or office function lever handles that. The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever with entry/office function, the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with lever handle for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG00 is a Grade 2 entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/8 inch backset. The Schlage ALX70 is classroom function, where the outside lever is locked only by key from outside.
18) Can I match the ALX70 with a non-keyed lever on the corridor doors that do not need locking?
Yes, with a passage function lever. Within the same Schlage family the ALX10 is the ANSI F75 passage lock and the ALX40 is the ANSI F76 privacy lock, both non-keyed. Across brands, the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 medium duty non-handed cylindrical passage lever and the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lever with the Withnell design for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. The ALX70 itself is keyed, ANSI F84 classroom.
19) Is a Grade 3 lever an acceptable substitute for the ALX70 on a commercial opening?
They sit at different ratings. The Schlage ALX70 is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000 Grade 2 and is a heavy duty commercial lock. The Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance/office lever is Grade 3 with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Callan Artino entrance leverset is also Grade 3. If a facility specification calls out a BHMA grade, the grade on the submittal is what decides the swap.
20) I need a matching inactive lever on the same room. Does the ALX70 come as a dummy?
The ALX70 is a keyed classroom lock; the non-keyed trim in the same Schlage family is the ALX170 single dummy and ALX172 double dummy. Cross brand dummy trims include the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy, a Grade 1 non-keyed heavy duty cylindrical lever trim, and the BEST 7KC Series 1DT single dummy, a Grade 2 medium duty version. A dummy trim has no latch and does not operate the door, so it pairs with a functioning lock rather than replacing one.
21) Would an electronic keypad lever work in place of a keyed classroom lock?
They are credentialed differently. The Schlage ALX70 is a mechanical lock, not electronic, and ships with two keys and a Schlage key cylinder in the outside lever. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in passage function for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors. A keypad set changes how the room is opened and how access is revoked, so it does not drop into a keyed master key system the way a cylinder lock does.
22) I am replacing Yale hardware but want to keep Schlage keys. Does the ALX70 help with that?
The Schlage ALX70 takes Schlage cylinders directly, including a conventional 6-pin C keyway, SFIC less core, and FSIC less core, and the chassis accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats. Where the existing hardware is Yale and needs to accept a Schlage cylinder instead, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which addresses the cylinder on the existing lock rather than replacing it.
23) What is the difference between the ALX70 Vandlgard feature and a vandal resistant lever from another brand?
The Schlage ALX70 has a field selectable Vandlgard feature that is field reversible between Vandlgard and non-Vandlgard locked lever engagement, so one lock can be set either way after it is on the door. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever in passage/closet function for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, which builds the behavior into a fixed non-keyed lock. The ALX70 is a keyed classroom lock.
24) The opening needs a lock that releases on electrical signal. Is there an option beyond the ALX70?
The Schlage ALX70 is a mechanical, non-electronic classroom lock. For an electrified cylindrical opening, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever at 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, offered with an NZ lever and D rose. Fail safe means the behavior on power loss has to be reconciled with the egress and fire requirements for the opening before it is ordered.
25) What finishes does the Schlage ALX70 Omega lever come in, and is there an antimicrobial option?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 643E aged bronze, and 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial. The 626AM is the one to specify for healthcare or food service touchpoints, and every finish is offered against all four cylinder preps.
26) What is the ALX70 lever and chassis actually made of?
Zinc and steel through the chassis and trim, with a stainless steel latchbolt, which is the part that takes the wear and the weather at the door edge. The spindle is deep drawn with five points of lever engagement to stop the lever drooping over time, and Grade 1 compression springs return it. Captured screws in the latch, strike and inside spring cage mean no loose parts on the floor during install.
27) Does the ALX70 need power or wiring run to the door?
No. The ALX70 is a mechanical cylindrical lock with no electronics, so there is no transfer hinge, no power supply and no wiring to coordinate. If the opening needs to be released from a card reader or an access control panel, the ND Series adds electrified options that the ALX does not carry, and cross-brand the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a 12VAC/DC fail safe electrified cylindrical lever.
28) Is a residential-grade lever like the Kwikset Breton interchangeable with a commercial classroom lock?
They serve different openings. The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 passage lever set for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton is the Grade 3 privacy version for the same thickness range. The Schlage ALX70 is a commercial heavy duty Grade 2 keyed classroom lock in zinc and steel. Passage and privacy sets have no key cylinder, so neither can serve a room that has to be locked and unlocked by key.
