Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX70P BRW 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage ALX70 classroom function actually work on a school door?
The ALX70 is an ANSI F84 classroom lock. The key in the outside lever locks or unlocks the outside lever, and the latchbolt is a deadlocking latch operated by the levers. The inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room can get out without a key. There is no way to lock or unlock from inside the room, which is exactly what classroom function means: a teacher or custodian has to key the outside lever. If you need the ability to lock the door from inside during a lockdown, classroom function is the wrong choice.
2) Can I order the Schlage ALX70 with a 2-3/8 inch backset instead of 2-3/4?
Yes. The default latch ships 2-3/4 inch backset (part 47267042, deadlatch, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 square corner face), but 2-3/8 inch backset deadlatches are selectable at order: 47267051 with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 square corner face, 47267052 with a 1 x 2-1/4 square corner, and 47267054 with a 1 x 2-1/4 round corner. Pick the backset to match the existing cross-bore in the door, and the faceplate corner to match the existing mortise in the door edge.
3) What cylinder options does the Schlage ALX70 come in, and what do B, J, L and P mean?
Four cylinder choices. P is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, supplied with 2 keys. L is less conventional cylinder, for when you are supplying your own Schlage-format cylinder. B is prepped for small format interchangeable core, less core. J is prepped for Schlage full size interchangeable core, less core. If your facility already runs SFIC on a master system, order B and drop your own cores in. The chassis also accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats, and takes Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders where you need high security.
4) Can I get several ALX70 classroom locks keyed alike?
Yes, keying is a required selection at order. Keyed different is standard; keyed alike is available when you want one key to run multiple classroom doors, and there is a key code field if you are matching an existing system. If you selected a less-cylinder option (B, J or L), choose None for keying, since you will be supplying the cylinder or core and keying it yourself.
5) Is a Grade 2 ALX70 strong enough for a school corridor, or should I go Grade 1?
The ALX70 is a Grade 2 lock rated heavy duty, with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs, built in zinc and steel. For most classroom and office openings that is the right level. Where a spec calls out Grade 1 outright, step up: Schlage's own ND Series is the Grade 1 companion and the ALX levers are made to suit ND trim, so the two can share a look across a building. Among other brands we carry, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lock is a Grade 1 option covering 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
6) What is a direct cross for a Schlage ALX70 classroom lever if I need Grade 1 instead of Grade 2?
The Schlage ALX70 is a Grade 2 cylindrical classroom lock, ANSI F84 function, with the key in the outside lever locking and unlocking that lever while the inside lever stays free. For the same classroom function in a Grade 1 cylindrical lever, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lock covers it, with a clutching lever and a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. Function is the same classroom behavior; the difference is the ANSI/BHMA grade and the clutching lever design.
7) I need the outside lever always locked and key-only entry instead of a classroom lock - what is the equivalent?
The Schlage ALX70 classroom function leaves the outside lever unlocked until a key turns it. For an opening that must stay locked at all times with key-only access, a storeroom function lever is the right part: the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt and a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever.
8) Do I have to specify handing when ordering a Schlage ALX70 Broadway lever?
No. The ALX70 is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand openings. That is useful for a property manager or locksmith carrying truck stock, since a single part number handles any door swing.
9) What is the Vandlgard feature on the ALX70 and can I turn it off?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely when the lock is locked instead of holding rigid, so a kick or a hard pull on the lever does not transfer force into the chassis. On the ALX Series it is field selectable and field reversible between Vandlgard and non-Vandlgard locked lever engagement, so you decide on site rather than at the order form. Worth having on corridor classroom doors and anywhere students or the public can reach the lever.
10) What else could I use instead of a Schlage ALX70 for a classroom door?
A few directions. Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it keys into an existing Schlage C system the same way the ALX70's P cylinder does. Dexter C1000 classroom is the Grade 1 step up with a clutching lever, for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. If the real requirement is lockdown capability from inside the room, neither of those is it, look at the Dexter C1000 Classroom Security function instead.
11) Can I change an ALX70 classroom lock to a different function later without buying a new lock?
Yes, and that is the point of the ALX modular design. The patent pending chassis allows quick in-field function setup, and one chassis fits all functions and cores. So if a classroom gets repurposed as a storeroom or an office, a facility manager can reconfigure rather than replace. The keyed functions in the family are ALX50 entrance/office (F82), ALX53 entrance (F109), ALX70 classroom (F84) and ALX80 storeroom (F86); non-keyed are ALX10 passage, ALX40 privacy, ALX44 hospital privacy, and ALX170/ALX172 dummy trim.
12) The room never needs to be locked from inside - what should I use instead of the ALX70 classroom function?
The Schlage ALX70 is a keyed classroom lock, meaning a key in the outside lever locks or unlocks that lever. If the opening only needs a latch with both levers always free, a non-keyed passage lever such as the Falcon B101, a Grade 2 non-handed cylindrical passage lever, or the Hager 2510 Grade 2 passage lever with a 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch door thickness range, suits that opening instead. Neither takes a cylinder.
13) Is an entrance or office lever like the Falcon B511 or Cal-Royal AG00 a substitute for the ALX70?
They are not the same function. The Schlage ALX70 is a classroom lock with a key cylinder outside and no outside locking from the inside push button on a keyed basis - the key in the outside lever does the locking. The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 entry/office function lever and the Cal-Royal AG00 is an entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and 2-3/8 inch backset. Entrance/office functions let an occupant lock the outside lever from inside, which is a different behavior than the classroom function and generally not what a classroom spec calls for.
14) We use keypad access on some rooms - can a keypad lever replace the ALX70 on a classroom door?
They solve different problems. The Schlage ALX70 is a mechanical, non-electronic Grade 2 classroom lock keyed with two keys supplied. A Delaney LP250 electronic keypad leverlock is a Grade 2 lever that grants access by code instead of key, and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set in passage function with a 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch door thickness range. Choose the keypad route only where credential-by-code is wanted; where the room must stay on a Schlage key system, the ALX70 is the lock that keys into it.
15) Is a Grade 3 residential-style entrance lever an acceptable substitute for the ALX70 in a commercial building?
The Schlage ALX70 is a commercial, heavy duty Grade 2 cylindrical lock in zinc and steel. Grade 3 leversets such as the Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance/office lever, with a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range, or the Callan Artino Grade 3 entrance leverset sit at a lower ANSI/BHMA grade and are not classroom function. If the drawing calls out Grade 2 classroom, those do not meet it.
16) For a high-abuse corridor, what is the alternative to the ALX70 with its Vandlgard feature?
The Schlage ALX70 carries a field selectable Vandlgard feature, so the locked outside lever can be set to rotate freely without transmitting force to the chassis, and it can be reversed in the field to non-Vandlgard engagement. In a non-keyed opening needing similar abuse resistance, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever in passage/closet function, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. The Corbin is passage only, so it does not provide the keyed classroom control the ALX70 does.
17) What finishes does the Schlage ALX70 Broadway lever come in, and is there an antimicrobial option?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. The 626AM antimicrobial finish is the one to specify for healthcare, food service, or any facility standardizing on touch surfaces. All ten are available with each of the four cylinder prep options.
18) Will the ALX70 lever droop or get loose on a high traffic door?
The ALX chassis uses a deep-drawn spindle with five points of lever engagement specifically to prevent droop and wobble, which is the usual failure on heavily used lever locks. Captured screws in the latch, strike and inside spring cage also mean no small loose parts during install or service. Grade 1 compression springs return the lever.
19) What matches the ALX70 lever trim on doors that only need a pull, with no latch?
For a door leaf that needs matching lever trim without a working latch, use a dummy trim rather than the keyed Schlage ALX70. The BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim is a Grade 2 non-keyed cylindrical lever dummy, and the BEST 9K Series 1DT is the Grade 1 heavy duty equivalent. The Accentra 455LN Augusta is another Grade 1 single dummy cylindrical lever option.
