Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX70P ATH 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Schlage ALX70 rated for a fire rated classroom door?
UL/cUL listed: all locks 3-hour on A label fire doors up to 4 x 8 feet or 4 x 10 feet single, and 8 x 8 feet pairs; 90-minute on 8 x 10 foot pairs when specified with the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option. It is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, function F84, and meets ADA requirements.
2) Does the Schlage ALX70 come with a 2-3/8 inch backset latch or only 2-3/4?
Either one. The lock ships standard with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch (47267042, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner face), and 2-3/8 inch backset deadlatches are selectable at order in 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 square corner, 1 x 2-1/4 square corner, and 1 x 2-1/4 round corner. Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore and pick the latch to match; those are the two standard commercial backsets.
3) How does a classroom function lock actually work when a teacher needs to lock the door?
On the ALX70 the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key only, from the outside. There is no thumbturn or button on the inside that locks the outside lever, so the door has to be keyed from the corridor side. The inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room can walk out at any time regardless of how the outside is set. The latchbolt is a deadlocking latch. If you need staff to be able to secure the door from inside the room without stepping into the hallway, this is the wrong function.
4) I need a classroom lock that locks from inside the room. Is there an alternative to the Schlage ALX70?
For lockdown from inside the classroom, look at classroom security function rather than plain classroom. The Dexter C1000 Series Classroom Security cylindrical lever is a Grade 1 option for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The ALX70 is key-outside-only, so it will not do inside lockdown.
5) Is the Schlage ALX70 handed? I have doors swinging both ways down the corridor.
Non-handed. One ALX70 covers left and right hand openings, so a property manager standardizing a floor orders one part number rather than splitting the order by swing.
6) Can I get the Schlage ALX70 to work on my existing master key system?
Yes, and you have four cylinder routes. Order it P for a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, B for small format interchangeable core less core, J for full size interchangeable core less core, or L less conventional cylinder if you are supplying your own. The less-core options let a locksmith drop in the core that already matches the building's system. The chassis accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats, and it takes Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders for high security openings.
7) What is the closest Grade 1 equivalent to the Schlage ALX70 Athens classroom lock?
The ALX70 is an ANSI F84 classroom cylindrical lock certified to Grade 2. When a specification calls for Grade 1 on a classroom opening, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom cylindrical lever lock is a Grade 1 classroom-function cylindrical lever with a clutching, keyed design and a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. Both are keyed cylindrical levers holding the same classroom function, so the opening prep concept is the same; the difference is the certification grade and the clutch mechanism in the Dexter lever versus the field selectable Vandlgard engagement on the ALX70.
8) Which classroom lever lock matches the Schlage C keyway and a 2-3/4 inch backset besides the ALX70?
The Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, in the AG Series. The ALX70 ships with a 2-3/4 inch backset as its default and offers a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder among its cylinder choices, alongside SFIC and FSIC less-core builds and less-conventional-cylinder builds for shops fitting their own cores. If the job needs to stay on an existing Schlage C key system, both carry that keyway; the ALX70 additionally covers small format and full size interchangeable core programs.
9) What should be used instead of a classroom lock when the room must be locked from inside during a lockdown?
The ALX70 classroom function is keyed from the outside only: the key in the outside lever locks or unlocks the outside lever, and the inside lever is always free. Staff have to step into the corridor with a key to secure the door. Where a facility wants the room secured without opening the door, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom security cylindrical lever lock carries the classroom security function in a Grade 1 clutching keyed lever with a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. That function difference is the deciding one for schools writing lockdown procedures.
10) If a door should stay locked at all times and be opened by key, is a classroom lock the right choice?
No. On the ALX70 the outside lever is locked or unlocked by the key and stays in whatever state it was left, which suits a room an instructor secures at the start of a period. A door that must be locked continuously and released only by key each time calls for a storeroom function: the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Both are Grade 2 keyed cylindrical levers like the ALX70.
11) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ALX lock and can I turn it off?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely when the lock is locked instead of taking the force into the chassis, which is what protects the lock from someone hanging on or kicking the lever in a corridor. On the ALX70 it is field selectable and field reversible, so the same lock can be set back to standard rigid locked-lever engagement without ordering a different part. Set it in the field to suit the opening.
12) If I order several Schlage ALX70 classroom locks, can they all be on one key?
Keying is specified at order. Keyed different is standard, keyed alike is available when you want a set of classrooms to open on a single key, and there is a key code field if the building already runs a code you need matched. Less-cylinder configurations are ordered with no keying. Two keys come with the lock.
13) Does the Schlage ALX70 meet Florida and Miami-Dade hurricane code, and California standards?
The ALX Series is compliant with Florida Building Code and Miami-Dade hurricane requirements. For the California Referenced Standards Code, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less comply. Relevant if you are specifying into coastal or California institutional work.
14) Should I spec the Grade 2 Schlage ALX70 or step up to a Grade 1 classroom lock?
The ALX70 is a Grade 2 heavy duty cylindrical lock with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs, built for classroom and general institutional traffic. If the opening is high abuse or your spec calls out Grade 1, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lever is a Grade 1 cylindrical for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The ALX also suites with Schlage ND Series Grade 1 locks, so a building can run ALX on classrooms and ND on the harder openings on the same key system and the same lever look.
15) What finishes does the Schlage ALX70 Athens lever come in, and is there an option for a healthcare corridor?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. For patient corridors and other high touch areas, 626AM is the antimicrobial satin chrome, and every finish is available across all four cylinder options.
16) I need to change a classroom door to a storeroom function later. Do I have to buy a whole new Schlage lock?
No. The ALX chassis is a single design that fits all functions and cores, and its patent pending chassis allows quick in-field function set up, so a facility repurposing a room can change function without replacing the lock. Keyed functions in the series are ALX50 entrance/office (F82), ALX53 entrance (F109), ALX70 classroom (F84), and ALX80 storeroom (F86); non-keyed are ALX10 passage (F75), ALX40 privacy (F76), ALX44 hospital privacy, ALX170 single dummy and ALX172 double dummy.
17) Do I need to order the latch and strike separately with the Schlage ALX70?
They are part of the order, not an add-on you chase later. Latch and strike are both required selections, defaulting to the 47267042 2-3/4 inch deadlatch and the 47267101 ANSI strike. Captured screws in the latch, strike and inside spring cage mean no small loose parts on the install, which is what keeps a truck stock job from turning into a callback.
18) Is there a cheaper Grade 2 classroom lever than the Schlage ALX70 if the opening is not heavy traffic?
The Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is a Grade 2 option with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it takes the same standard commercial backset prep and the same keyway family. What you give up against the ALX70 is the field selectable Vandlgard and the modular chassis that lets you change function later without a new lock.
19) What is a simpler keyed lever for an office door that does not need classroom function?
Offices normally take an entrance or entry/office function rather than classroom. The Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever with entry/office function, and the Cal-Royal AG00 is a Grade 2 entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/8 inch backset for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Each of these lets an occupant secure the door from inside without a key, which the ALX70 classroom function does not do. Schlage also builds the same chassis in ALX50 entrance/office and ALX53 entrance functions.
20) Can a passage lever be used on a classroom door instead of a keyed classroom lock?
A passage lever has no cylinder and cannot secure the opening, so it does not substitute for the ALX70, which is keyed with a single cylinder and ships with two keys. Passage levers such as the Falcon B101 Grade 2 non-handed cylindrical passage lever, the Hager 2510 Grade 2 passage lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Accentra 5301LN Augusta Grade 2 passage/closet lever are the right part for the corridor and closet doors on the same job where no locking is wanted. Schlage builds the matching non-keyed function as the ALX10 passage lock on the same chassis.
21) Which lock suits a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches where the ALX70 does not fit?
The ALX70 chassis accommodates 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness with minimal adjustment. For thicker leaves, the Falcon K101 Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch with a fire rating. Both of those are passage function rather than classroom, so on a thick door that also has to be keyed, confirm the function before ordering.
22) What is the difference between the Schlage ALX70 and a Grade 3 lever lock for a commercial corridor?
The ALX70 is a heavy duty commercial cylindrical lock certified Grade 2 under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000. Grade 3 levers such as the Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Callan Artino entrance leverset, and the Kwikset 200BRNL RDT Breton passage lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors sit at a different certification tier and none of them carries classroom function. On a corridor or classroom door written to a commercial spec, the grade is the line the specifier is checking.
23) What lock handles a utility or holding room where the ALX70 classroom function is not appropriate?
Rooms that must not be lockable from inside take an asylum or institutional function, keyed both sides. The Dexter C1000 Series is a Grade 1 asylum ANSI F87 cylindrical lock for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 heavy duty asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. The ALX70 leaves the inside lever always free for immediate egress, which is the opposite behavior from what those openings require.
24) Will Yale or Accentra hardware accept a Schlage key on a job standardized around Schlage keyways?
The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is how a Yale lock is brought onto a Schlage key system. The ALX70 needs no adapter for that: it accepts all Schlage cylinder formats plus five competitive formats, is offered with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, and is also built less core for SFIC and FSIC programs or less conventional cylinder for shops supplying their own. On a facility standardizing keying, that is the practical difference between the two paths.
25) Which classroom lock should be used where the door needs to be electrically released from a central station?
The ALX70 is a mechanical lock with no electrical option. For an opening tied to an access control system, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock at 12VAC/DC with an NZ lever and D rose for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. Fail safe means the lever unlocks when power drops, so verify that behavior against the life safety plan for the room before substituting it for a keyed classroom lock.
26) Will a Schlage ALX70 lever match the other Schlage levers already on my building's doors?
The Athens lever is one of ten ALX designs, on two rose designs that follow the lever choice, and the ALX lever set is matched to Schlage ND Series Grade 1 locks. So classrooms on ALX and heavier openings on ND read as one hardware set down a corridor. Split finishes and split styles are handled through the sales center and carry extended manufacturer lead times.
27) What is the Schlage ALX70 lock body made of?
Zinc and steel, with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs. The spindle is deep drawn with 5 points of lever engagement, which is what keeps the lever from drooping or wobbling over time on a heavily used classroom door.
28) What matches the Schlage ALX70 on a door that needs no lock at all, like a pair with one active leaf?
An inactive leaf or a pull-only door takes dummy trim, which has no chassis and no latch. The BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed cylindrical lever, the BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim is Grade 2 medium duty, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever in the 5400 Series. The ALX70 by contrast is a keyed cylindrical lock with a deadlocking latchbolt, so it is the wrong part on a leaf that never latches. Schlage covers the same need with ALX170 single dummy and ALX172 double dummy trim.
29) Is an electronic keypad leverset an alternative to a keyed classroom lock?
It is a different access method, not a drop-in. The ALX70 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed with a single cylinder and supplied with two keys. Code-entry alternatives include the Delaney LP250 Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock and the Lockey 1150 heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors, which is passage function. Choosing one of those means managing codes rather than a key system, and it drops the ALX70's ability to run on an existing Schlage master key hierarchy.
30) Does a privacy lever work on a classroom or staff room door?
A privacy lever locks from the inside with a thumbturn and has no key cylinder for routine entry, so it does not replace the ALX70 on a door an administrator has to key. Privacy options include the Hager 2540 Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, the Arrow MK02-TA Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob and a fire rating for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Kwikset 300BRNL RDT Breton Grade 3 privacy lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Those belong on restrooms and single-occupancy rooms; the ALX70 stays on the doors that need a key.
31) Can a residential or decorative entry lever be used in place of a commercial classroom lock?
Decorative entry levers such as the Deltana 6201 Manchester, 6411 Morant, and 6431 Linstead entry levers for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, the Deltana 5851 Claremont entry lever, and the Baldwin Estate 5103 passage and privacy levers with the 5048 rose are built for entry, passage, and privacy service. None of them carries the classroom function. The ALX70 is a commercial heavy duty ANSI F84 classroom lock with a deadlocking latchbolt, which is what a school or institutional specification is asking for on a keyed classroom opening.
