Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX70P SAT 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage ALX70 classroom function actually work day to day?
Outside lever is locked and unlocked by key only, from the outside. There is no way to lock the outside lever from inside the room, which is what separates a classroom lock from an entry/office lock. The inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room can walk out at any time without touching the key. The latch is a deadlatch, so it resists being carded once the door closes. This is the ANSI F84 classroom function.
2) Do I have to order the ALX70 handed for a left or right hand door?
No. The ALX70 is non-handed, so one part covers left and right hand openings. That is what makes it worth stocking on the truck or in a facility parts crib: you carry one lock instead of two.
3) Which cylinder option should I order the ALX70 with if my building is on small format interchangeable core?
Four cylinder choices are offered. B is SFIC less core and J is FSIC less core, both shipped without a core so your locksmith drops in the cores keyed to your existing system. L is less conventional cylinder, for when you are supplying your own. P is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, which is the one to take if you want the lock arriving ready to key. If you order a less core or less cylinder option, set the keying selection to None rather than keyed different or keyed alike.
4) Can I use a competitor's cylinder in a Schlage ALX lock, or does it have to be Schlage?
The ALX chassis takes every Schlage cylinder plus five competitive cylinder formats, so a building already standardized on another manufacturer's key system does not have to rekey to move to these locks. Running Primus XP cylinders, which are UL 437 listed, gives you high security key control in the same chassis.
5) Is the Schlage ALX70 approved for a fire rated classroom door?
It is UL and cUL listed for 3-hour A label fire doors up to 4 x 8 feet or 4 x 10 feet single, and 8 x 8 feet pairs. For 8 x 10 foot pairs the rating is 90 minutes, and that one requires the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option. It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, and meets ADA requirements. It also complies with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements, and with the California Referenced Standards Code for levers whose return to door is 1/2 inch or less.
6) Is a Grade 2 lock enough for a school corridor, or should I be buying Grade 1?
The ALX70 is Grade 2 but rated heavy duty, with a stainless steel latchbolt, Grade 1 compression springs and a deep drawn spindle with five points of lever engagement to stop the lever drooping. For classroom and general institutional openings that is the usual spec. If your standard requires Grade 1 on the same opening, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lock is a Grade 1 clutching classroom lever covering 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Schlage's own Grade 1 answer is the ND Series, which the ALX suites with, so you can run ND on the hard openings and ALX everywhere else on one key system and one lever look.
7) I need a lock a teacher can secure from inside the room. Is the ALX70 the right one?
No. The ALX70 is keyed from the outside only, so a teacher has to step into the corridor with a key to lock the door. If your lockdown procedure requires securing the room from inside, look at a classroom security function instead, such as the Dexter C1000 Classroom Security cylindrical lever, which is Grade 1 and fits 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The ALX70 is the right choice where keying is controlled by staff or maintenance and the room is locked from the hall.
8) What is the closest Grade 1 equivalent to the Schlage ALX70 classroom lever for a high-traffic school corridor?
The Schlage ALX70 is a Grade 2 cylindrical classroom lock, ANSI F84, with a key cylinder outside and push button inside on a deadlatch. If the opening calls for Grade 1, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom cylindrical lever lock is a Grade 1 keyed classroom function with clutching levers and a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. Both are keyed classroom function cylindrical levers; the C1000 is rated at the higher ANSI grade and uses a clutching lever, while the ALX70 carries the field selectable Vandlgard feature.
9) Is there a Grade 2 classroom lever that keys into an existing Schlage C keyway master system without ordering a Schlage lock?
The Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is a Grade 2 classroom function with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different cylinder and a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it pins into a Schlage C system directly. The Schlage ALX70 classroom lock also uses a 2-3/4 inch backset as standard and can be ordered with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, or as SFIC less core, FSIC less core, or less conventional cylinder for a locksmith to fill from stock.
10) The door only needs to stay locked at all times with key access, not classroom function. What should be ordered instead of the ALX70?
Classroom function on the ALX70 means the key locks or unlocks the outside lever, so the lever can be left unlocked for a period. For a door that stays locked continuously with the outside lever always requiring the key, a storeroom function is the right call: the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Staying inside the Schlage family, the ALX80 is the ANSI F86 storeroom function on the same chassis.
11) The door is 2 inches thick. Will an ALX70 fit, and what cylindrical lever covers that thickness?
The Schlage ALX70 accommodates 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors with minimal chassis adjustment. For a 2 inch door leaf, the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage cylindrical lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, the Hager 2510 Grade 2 passage lever covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. Those three are passage function, so they are the right chassis range but not a keyed classroom lock.
12) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ALX and do I have to decide before I order?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely when the lock is secured, so the force of someone yanking down on a locked lever goes nowhere instead of into the chassis. On the ALX it is field selectable and field reversible, so you can flip between Vandlgard and standard locked lever engagement after the lock is on the door. You do not have to commit at the order stage. On a school corridor or a high traffic public building this is the feature that cuts lever replacement calls.
13) Can I get several ALX70 classroom locks keyed alike so one key runs a whole wing?
Yes, keyed alike is a selection at order time alongside keyed different, and there is a key code field if the locks have to match an existing system. Keyed different is the standard. Two keys come with the lock. If you are ordering a less core or less cylinder version, keying is handled with your cores rather than through this selection.
14) What else could I buy instead of a Schlage classroom lever, and how do they differ?
The Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it keys into the same C keyway system and matches the same door prep. The Dexter C1000 classroom lock is the Grade 1 step up, with a clutching lever, and Dexter also builds a Classroom Security version if you need the room lockable from inside by key. Where the Schlage separates itself is the modular chassis: one chassis covers every ALX function, so a facility can change a door from classroom to storeroom later without buying a new lock.
15) Can I standardize a whole building on Schlage ALX levers if the doors have different functions?
Yes, and that is what the series is built around. Beyond the ALX70 classroom, the family covers ALX10 passage (F75), ALX40 privacy (F76), ALX44 hospital privacy, ALX170 single dummy and ALX172 double dummy on the non-keyed side, and ALX50 entrance/office (F82), ALX53 entrance (F109) and ALX80 storeroom (F86) on the keyed side. One chassis serves all of them, so the lever, rose and finish stay identical across the building and a function change is a chassis reconfiguration rather than a new lock. Where an opening needs Grade 1, the ND Series suites with ALX and adds 15 more functions plus 4 electrified options.
16) What Grade 1 electrified cylindrical lever pairs with an access control system if the ALX70 is mechanical only?
The Schlage ALX70 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock. For an opening tied into access control, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock at 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, offered with the NZ lever and D rose. It is the same cylindrical lever format but requires power and wiring to the door, where the ALX70 does not.
17) Is a Grade 2 entrance/office lever an acceptable substitute for a classroom lock on an office or suite door?
For an office or suite door where staff lock up from inside, entrance/office function is the usual choice rather than classroom. The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever with entry/office function, the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever, and the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever uses a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different cylinder with a 2-3/8 inch backset for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. What separates these from the Schlage ALX70 is the lock function itself: classroom function on the ALX70 has no inside locking button that secures the outside lever from within the room, it locks and unlocks by key from the corridor side with a push button inside.
18) Do I need a keyed classroom lock on every door, or can the non-locking doors take something cheaper to maintain?
Only the doors that must be secured need the keyed Schlage ALX70, which is a keyed single cylinder classroom lock. Corridor, hall, and closet doors that only need latching take a passage lever: the Falcon B101 Grade 2 non-handed passage lever, the Arrow GL01 Grade 2 Sierra lever passage lock for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, or the Accentra 5301LN Augusta Grade 2 passage/closet lever from the 5300 Series. Within Schlage, the ALX10 is the ANSI F75 passage function on the same chassis. Dropping the cylinder from those openings also drops them out of the keying schedule.
19) Can a Grade 3 entrance leverset be used in place of a Grade 2 commercial classroom lock?
They sit at different ANSI levels. The Schlage ALX70 is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2, and is a commercial heavy duty lock. The Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance/office lever is Grade 3 with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset, and the Kwikset 200BRNL RDT Breton passage lever is Grade 3 for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. A specification written to Grade 2 or a facility standardizing on commercial hardware will not accept a Grade 3 lock as an equal.
20) What looks like a classroom lever substitute but will not lock anything?
Dummy trim is the common mix-up. The BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim is a Grade 1 non-keyed heavy duty lever, the BEST 7KC Series single dummy is Grade 2 medium duty, the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy from the 5400 Series, and the Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummy comes in left hand and right hand versions. None of them have a latch or a cylinder, they are a fixed lever pulled for appearance on an inactive leaf. The Schlage ALX70 is a keyed cylindrical classroom lock with a deadlatch, so ordering dummy trim to match a door in the same run leaves that opening with nothing that latches.
21) What should go on a patient room or utility door where the ALX70 classroom function is not appropriate?
Asylum or institution function is keyed on both sides so neither lever can be left free, which suits patient rooms and utility spaces. The Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock is Grade 1, ANSI F87, for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 heavy duty asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. The Schlage ALX70 keeps the inside lever always free for immediate egress, which is what a classroom function is for and what an asylum function deliberately does not do.
22) The drawing calls for a lever, but a knob was ordered. Does a knob lock substitute for the ALX70 on a commercial opening?
The Schlage ALX70 is a lever lock with the Saturn lever and meets ADA requirements. Knob locks such as the Arrow MK33-BD-CS Grade 2 asylum ball knob and the Arrow MK02-TA Grade 2 privacy Tudor knob are the same cylindrical chassis family but a knob rather than a lever, so they do not carry the same accessibility position on a door governed by ADA. Where the spec calls for a lever, a knob is not an equal substitute regardless of grade.
23) Can a cylindrical classroom lever be used on a door that has a pushpad exit device?
No, those are different hardware. A door with a pushpad exit device takes lever trim made for that device, such as the Corbin Russwin 585F715 Grade 1 lock lever for the ED8000 pushpad exit device, or the Imperial USA ED-EL500HD heavy duty escutcheon lever trim in entry function. The Schlage ALX70 is a bored cylindrical lock that installs in a standard 161 bored prep with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch and its own ANSI strike, so it goes on a door that has no exit device.
24) What finishes does the Schlage ALX70 Saturn lever come in, and is there one for a healthcare corridor?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. For patient rooms and other high touch healthcare openings, 626AM is the antimicrobial version of the standard 626 satin chrome, so it matches the rest of a 626 building visually while carrying the antimicrobial coating.
25) What is the ALX70 lock body made of and will it hold up in a high traffic entry?
Zinc and steel construction, rated heavy duty commercial, with a stainless steel latchbolt and captured screws in the latch, strike and inside spring cage so there are no small loose parts to lose during service. The Saturn lever runs on a deep drawn spindle with five points of engagement, which is the detail that keeps a lever from drooping after a few years of a public corridor.
26) Is a keypad leverset a workable alternative to a keyed classroom lock so staff do not carry keys?
They solve access differently. The Schlage ALX70 is a non-electronic mechanical classroom lock keyed from the outside and supplied with two keys. If credentials rather than keys are wanted, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, the Emtek Classic keypad leverset is a code-entry lever, and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in passage function for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors. The Lockey is mechanical rather than electronic, so it needs no power, but it is passage function and not a classroom lock.
