Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX70P LON 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage ALX70 classroom lock work day to day, and can a teacher lock the door from inside?
The ALX70 is keyed from the outside only. The key in the outside lever locks or unlocks that lever, and there is no way to lock the door from inside the room, so a teacher has to step into the corridor with a key to secure it. The inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room can get out at any time whether the outside is locked or not. If you need a staff member to lock down from inside the room without opening the door, a classroom function is the wrong function. The Dexter C1000 Series classroom security lever is built for that case.
2) Can the Schlage ALX70 take my existing small format interchangeable cores?
Yes, and you choose the cylinder prep when you order. Four options: B for SFIC less core, J for FSIC less core, L less conventional cylinder, and P, a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. If you already run SFIC across the facility, order the B prep and drop your own cores in. The ALX chassis accepts all Schlage cylinders plus five competitive cylinder formats, and takes Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders where you need high security.
3) Is the Schlage ALX70 rated for a fire door, and does it meet ADA?
Fire rated and UL/cUL listed: 3 hour on an A label fire door up to 4 x 8 foot or 4 x 10 foot single doors and 8 x 8 foot pairs, and 90 minute on 8 x 10 foot pairs when specified with the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option. It meets ADA requirements, is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000 Grade 2, and complies with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements. For the California Referenced Standards Code, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply.
4) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage ALX70 classroom lever if the spec calls for a Grade 1 cylindrical classroom lock?
The Schlage ALX70 is a Grade 2 cylindrical classroom lock with a keyed outside lever and a free inside lever. Where the opening needs a Grade 1 classroom lock instead, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom cylindrical lever lock is a Grade 1 keyed classroom function with a clutching lever and a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. Both are keyed cylindrical classroom locks; the difference is the ANSI/BHMA grade level and the clutching lever action on the Dexter.
5) What is the difference between a classroom lever like the ALX70 and a storeroom lever?
The ALX70 is ANSI F84 classroom function: a key in the outside lever locks or unlocks that lever, so it can be left unlocked for occupancy, and the inside lever is always free. A storeroom lever such as the Cal-Royal AG05, a Grade 2 storeroom lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, or the Hager 2580 Grade 2 storeroom lock with a Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, keeps the outside lever permanently locked and the key only retracts the latch. Choose by whether the outside lever needs to be left unlocked during the day.
6) Do I have to specify handing when ordering a Schlage ALX70 lever lock?
No handing to specify. The ALX70 is non-handed, so the same lock goes on a left hand or a right hand door and you do not have to survey every opening before you order. That matters if you are buying a batch for a building and do not know the swing of each door.
7) What do I need to specify when ordering Schlage ALX70 classroom locks for a building, and do keys come with them?
Four decisions on the order: keying, cylinder prep, latch, and strike. Keying is keyed different as standard, keyed alike if you want a group of rooms on one key (you can supply a key code), or none if you picked a less-cylinder prep and are supplying your own cores. Latch and strike are both selectable. A keyed lock comes with 2 keys. Finish and cylinder prep are the two variant axes, ten finishes across all four cylinder preps.
8) Is a Grade 2 classroom lock enough for a school corridor, or should I spend up to Grade 1?
The ALX70 is a Grade 2 lock rated heavy duty, with a stainless steel latchbolt, Grade 1 compression springs and a zinc and steel body, which is the usual specification for classroom and office doors that are not on a main traffic route. Where a door takes constant abuse, a Grade 1 classroom lever is the step up: the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lock is Grade 1 with a clutching lever and covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Note the ALX also suites with Schlage ND Series Grade 1 locks, so you can put ND on the hard-use openings and ALX everywhere else and keep one key system and one lever look.
9) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ALX and do I have to decide before I order?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever swing freely when the lock is locked, so somebody hanging on the handle or kicking it does not transmit force into the chassis. On the ALX it is field selectable and field reversible, so you can switch a lock between Vandlgard and non-Vandlgard lever engagement after it is installed rather than buying a different part. Useful in a school where one wing gets abused and another does not.
10) Can I change a Schlage ALX lock from classroom to storeroom or office later without buying a new lock?
Yes. The ALX chassis design allows in-field function setup, and one chassis fits all functions and cores. Keyed functions in the series are ALX50 entrance/office (ANSI F82), ALX53 entrance (F109), ALX70 classroom (F84) and ALX80 storeroom (F86); non-keyed are ALX10 passage (F75), ALX40 privacy (F76), ALX44 hospital privacy, ALX170 single dummy and ALX172 double dummy. For a facility that repurposes rooms, that means changing what a door does without replacing the hardware.
11) I need a classroom lever lock that matches Schlage C keyway keys we already use. What are my options besides Schlage?
On the Schlage side, order the ALX70 with the P cylinder prep, a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, and it works on your existing key system. If you want a different brand on the same keyway, the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is Grade 2 with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 asylum function with a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder if the room needs key control on both sides instead.
12) I need an electrified classroom-type lever that unlocks on an access control signal. Is the Schlage ALX70 it?
No. The ALX70 is a purely mechanical cylindrical lock, keyed from the outside, with no electrified option. For an access-controlled opening, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 electrified cylindrical lever, fail safe, 12VAC/DC, for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. Keep the ALX70 for the openings that stay on keys.
13) The room does not need to be lockable from a key on the outside - what takes the place of an ALX70 classroom lever there?
The ALX70 keys the outside lever to lock and unlock it, which is only useful where the room gets secured from the corridor. For a corridor or closet opening that stays free at all times, the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical passage lever with a non-handed design in the B Series, and the Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever in passage/closet function. Neither is keyed, so there is no cylinder to key into the building system.
14) Can an office or entrance lever be used in place of a classroom lever on a keyed opening?
They key the same way but behave differently in use. The ALX70 is classroom function, where the key sets the outside lever locked or unlocked and there is no inside control. An entrance/office lever such as the Falcon B511CP6D, a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever in entry/office function, or the Dexter C1000 Grade 1 entry/office clutching lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, adds an inside pushbutton or turn so occupants can secure the door themselves. Use classroom where only key holders should change the lock state.
15) Is a Grade 3 lever an acceptable stand-in for a Grade 2 classroom lock on a commercial opening?
The ALX70 is a Grade 2 heavy duty commercial cylindrical lever. Grade 3 levers such as the Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, or the Callan Artino entrance leverset, are built to a lower ANSI/BHMA cycle and strength tier and are offered in entrance/office function rather than classroom. If a drawing or facility standard calls out Grade 2 classroom, a Grade 3 entrance lever does not meet that call-out.
16) What matches a classroom lever on the adjacent doors that do not need a key at all?
For non-keyed openings alongside a keyed classroom lever, the Accentra 4601LN with Augusta trim is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lever in the 4600 Series, the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lever with the Withnell design for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Design Hardware J75 is a Grade 2 passage lever lockset with a flat lever for 1-3/4 inch doors. All three sit at the same Grade 2 tier as the ALX70, so a run of doors stays consistent in grade while only the keyed rooms carry cylinders.
17) Is a keypad leverset a substitute for a keyed classroom lever?
They solve access differently. The ALX70 is a non-electronic mechanical lock keyed with a cylinder, supplied with two keys. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in passage function covering 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors. A keypad removes the key from the door, which also removes it from a building master key system, so a classroom lever on a keyed facility standard is not directly replaced by one.
18) What Grade 1 cylindrical lever should be specified where an opening takes abuse beyond what a Grade 2 classroom lock handles?
The ALX70 is a Grade 2 heavy duty cylindrical lever with a field selectable Vandlgard feature that lets the outside lever rotate freely when locked. For an opening that calls for Grade 1 vandal resistance, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 in the CL3100 Series is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lever with pressure release technology in the T Series. Both of those are passage/closet function, so they suit the abuse condition on a non-keyed door rather than replacing the classroom keying.
19) Does a knob lock in the same function work where a classroom lever is specified?
The ALX70 is a lever handle, non-handed, which is what meets ADA operability requirements. Knob locks such as the Arrow MK33-BD-CS, a Grade 2 asylum cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway, or the Arrow HK11-BB entrance cylindrical lock with a ball knob and conventional cylinder for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, share the cylindrical chassis and the C keyway but use a round knob rather than a lever. On an ADA-governed opening the handle type is the deciding difference.
20) Which lever locks handle a Yale or Accentra opening that needs to take a Schlage key?
The ALX70 can be ordered with a conventional 6-pin Schlage C keyway cylinder, so it drops straight into a Schlage-keyed facility. Where existing Accentra hardware has to accept the same key system rather than be replaced, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware. That is an adapter, not a lockset, so it changes what cylinder the existing lock takes rather than supplying a classroom function lock.
21) What keyed lever covers a 1-3/8 inch door on a 2-3/8 inch backset prep?
The ALX70 handles 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors and can be ordered with a 2-3/8 inch backset deadlatch in place of the standard 2-3/4 inch. The Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is another option prepped that way, a Grade 2 lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/8 inch backset for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The AG00 is entrance function rather than classroom, so match the function to how the room gets secured.
22) What finishes does the Schlage ALX70 Longitude lever come in, and is there anything for a healthcare corridor?
Ten finishes, and every one is available across all four cylinder preps: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. For a hospital or clinic touch surface, 626AM is the antimicrobial version of the standard 626 satin chrome, so you get the usual commercial look on the door.
23) Does the Longitude lever on the ALX70 match Schlage ND Series locks on other doors in the building?
Yes. The ALX lever designs are suited to Schlage ND Series Grade 1 locks, so the trim reads the same down a corridor where some openings are ALX and some are ND. ND also brings an additional 15 functions plus 4 electrified options, which is where to go for an opening that needs an electric lock, since the ALX70 is a mechanical lock with no electronics.
24) Can a locksmith stock ALX parts on the truck instead of carrying whole configured locks?
That is what the modular build is for. The ALX can be bought as a factory configured lock, less levers, or as separate chassis, function and lever kits assembled on site. One chassis covers every function and core, so a locksmith can carry a short list of parts and build the lock the job needs rather than driving back for a different part number. Captured screws in the latch, strike and inside spring cage mean no loose small parts on the floor during install.
25) A dummy lever is needed on the inactive leaf to match a keyed classroom lever - what works?
A dummy trim carries no latch and no cylinder, so it does not substitute for the ALX70 on the active leaf, but it matches the pull on an inactive leaf. The BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim is a Grade 2 non-keyed medium duty cylindrical lever, the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim is a Grade 1 non-keyed heavy duty cylindrical lever, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever in the 5400 Series.
