Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX70P RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

    1) What backset does the Schlage ALX Rhodes lever lock come with, and will it latch into my existing frame strike?
It ships with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch, faceplate 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inches with square corners, non-restoring. The standard strike is the ANSI 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch with a 1-3/16 inch lip and no dust box. If your frame is already prepped for an ANSI strike cutout, the supplied strike drops straight in; if the frame carries a small T-strike prep instead, order the lock with a T-strike so you are not patching the jamb.
    2) Do I have to order a Schlage ALX lever lock handed for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The ALX cylindrical lever is non-handed, so one part number works on a left or right hand opening and you can stock a single lock for a building with doors swinging both ways.
    3) Can I use my existing small format interchangeable cores in a Schlage ALX lock, or am I stuck with Schlage C keyway?
You pick the cylinder prep on the order. The ALX takes an SFIC prep less core, an FSIC prep less core, a less-conventional-cylinder version for your own cylinder, a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, or a Schlage FSIC prep supplied with the core. Beyond Schlage's own formats the chassis accepts five competitive cylinder formats, and it takes Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders where you need high security keying. If your facility is already keyed on an SFIC system, order the B prep and drop your cores in.
    4) Is the Schlage ALX lever lock approved for a fire rated door?
Yes. ALX locks are UL/cUL listed 3-hour for A label fire doors up to 4 by 8 or 4 by 10 feet single, and 8 by 8 foot pairs; 8 by 10 foot pairs are 90-minute with the 3/4 inch Grade 1 latch option. The series is tested and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2-2011 Series 4000, Grade 2.
    5) I have Schlage ND Series locks on my main doors. Will an ALX match them on the secondary openings?
That is the intended pairing. The ALX Series suites with the Grade 1 ND Series, and the ALX lever designs are made to match ND trim, so a corridor on ND and offices on ALX read as one set of hardware. The ND line adds 15 more functions plus four electrified options if a particular opening needs something the ALX does not cover.
    6) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage ALX70 classroom lever from another brand?
The Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, which lines up with the Rhodes lever's Grade 2 rating, conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder option and 2-3/4 inch backset. Both give you a keyed outside lever on a classroom function, and both take a Schlage C key, so an AG03 will fall into an existing Schlage C key system on the same bitting as the ALX70.
    7) What is a heavier-duty alternative to the Schlage ALX70 Rhodes classroom lock for a high-traffic school corridor?
The Dexter C1000 classroom cylindrical lever lock is Grade 1 with a clutching, keyed lever and a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. The Schlage ALX70 Rhodes is Grade 2, heavy duty, and fits 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors as well, so the two cover the same doors and the same classroom function while the Dexter carries the higher ANSI grade. If the specification on the drawing calls out Grade 1 cylindrical, the C1000 classroom meets it directly.
    8) I need a keyed lever for an office door where the occupant locks it from inside - is the ALX70 Rhodes right, or should I use something else?
For a door the occupant locks from the inside, look at the Hager 2525, a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, or the Falcon B511CP6D, a Grade 2 cylindrical lever with entry/office function. The Schlage ALX70 Rhodes uses a key cylinder outside with a push button inside on a deadlatch; a classroom-style keyed lever is aimed at locking and unlocking the outside lever by key rather than from inside the room. The ALX Series also lists an ALX50 ANSI F82 entrance/office function if you want to stay within the same series and lever design.
    9) What should I use instead of a Schlage ALX70 Rhodes on a storage or mechanical room that must stay locked at all times?
A storeroom function is the fit there: the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors. On a storeroom lock the outside lever stays locked and is retracted only by key, where the ALX70 Rhodes uses a key cylinder outside with a push button inside so the outside lever can be left unlocked. Schlage also lists an ALX80 ANSI F86 storeroom function within the same series.
    10) My door is 2 inches thick - will a Schlage ALX70 Rhodes fit, or do I need a different lock?
The ALX70 Rhodes accommodates 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness with minimal chassis adjustment, so a 2 inch door is outside that. For a 2 inch leaf, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 covers 1-3/4 to 2 inch, the Falcon K101 covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch, and the Hager 2525 entry lock covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch. Of those, the Hager 2525 is the keyed entry option; the CL3110 and K101 are passage functions with no cylinder.
    11) Does the Schlage ALX Rhodes lever meet ADA and California code for accessible openings?
The ALX Series meets ADA requirements, and levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. It is also compliant with Florida Building Code and Miami-Dade hurricane requirements, which matters if you are specifying for coastal work.
    12) What is Vandlgard on a Schlage ALX lock and can I turn it off?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely when locked instead of standing rigid, so someone hanging on it or kicking it down does not transfer force into the chassis. On ALX it is field selectable: you can reverse it to normal locked lever engagement on site with the chassis in the door, no new hardware. Useful in schools and multi-family where levers take abuse, and reversible if a tenant prefers the solid feel.
    13) Is a Grade 2 lock like the Schlage ALX enough for a school or high traffic corridor, or should I go Grade 1?
The ALX is a Grade 2 chassis rated heavy duty, with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs, which puts it above a typical Grade 2 for wear. For genuine high abuse corridors where the spec calls for Grade 1, the alternatives worth pricing are the Falcon T Series (T101, Grade 1, heavy duty, pressure release), the Falcon K Series K101 (Grade 1, heavy duty, 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch doors), the BEST 9K Series (Grade 1, heavy duty), or the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series, which is Grade 1 and vandal resistant for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
    14) What is a cheaper Grade 2 lever alternative to Schlage ALX that still takes a Schlage C keyway?
Cal-Royal's AG Series is the closest cross-brand match on keying: the AG00 entrance lever is Grade 2 with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/8 inch backset, and the AG03 classroom lever is the same keyway family on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Both accept 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors where the spec lists it. The AG05 storeroom lever is Grade 2 with a deadlocking latchbolt for the same thickness range. What you give up against ALX is the modular chassis and the field selectable Vandlgard.
    15) Can I stock one Schlage ALX chassis and change lock functions later instead of buying new locks?
That is the point of the modular build. One ALX chassis fits all functions and all core types, and the chassis design allows the function to be set up in the field, so a facility repurposing a room can change what the lock does without replacing the hardware. You can buy it three ways: factory configured and ready to hang, less levers, or as separate chassis, function and lever kits for a truck or a distributor's counter. Latch, strike and inside spring cage screws are captured, so there are no loose small parts to lose during the swap.
    16) I need a residential-style lever for an apartment interior door, not a commercial one. Is the Schlage ALX the right thing?
No, it is overbuilt for that. The ALX is a commercial, heavy duty Grade 2 cylindrical lock. For interior residential openings look at Grade 3 leversets such as the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage or 300BRNL Breton privacy (both Grade 3, 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors), or the Callan Asheville passage and Artino entrance leversets. Keep the ALX for corridor, office, and stairwell doors where the lock has to hold up.
    17) Does the Schlage ALX need power or wiring at the door?
No. The ALX is a mechanical cylindrical lock with no electronics, so there is nothing to wire, no power transfer hinge, and no behavior change when the building loses power. If the opening needs electrified control, the Grade 1 ND Series it suites with carries four electrified options; on the cross-brand side the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a fail safe electrified cylindrical lever at 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
    18) Is a Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever a substitute for the Schlage ALX70 Rhodes?
They share a keyway but not a function or a backset. The Cal-Royal AG00 is an entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/8 inch backset, fitting 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage ALX70 Rhodes ships on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 47267042 deadlatch and a key cylinder outside with push button inside. If the door is already bored for a 2-3/4 inch backset, the AG00 as listed will not reach the strike without a different latch, though the Schlage C keyway means either one keys into the same system.
    19) What is the difference between the Schlage ALX70 Rhodes and a Corbin Russwin CL3110 for a corridor door?
The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever lock with a passage/closet function, fire rated, for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. It is not keyed, so the lever is always free and there is nothing to lock. The Schlage ALX70 Rhodes is keyed, Grade 2, with two keys included and a field selectable Vandlgard feature that lets the outside lever rotate freely when locked. If the door needs to be secured by key, the CL3110 is not an option; if you only need a durable non-locking lever on a thicker door, it is.
    20) I have a Yale or Accentra opening and want to keep everything on one Schlage key - can I use the ALX70 Rhodes there?
The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is how an existing Accentra lock gets brought onto a Schlage key. Going the other direction, the ALX70 Rhodes is available with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, and the ALX chassis accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats, with SFIC and FSIC less-core options if you pin your own cores. On a mixed opening you can either adapt the Accentra hardware or specify the ALX70 in the core format your key system already uses.
    21) What matching non-keyed lever goes with a Schlage ALX70 Rhodes on the closet and hall doors of the same suite?
Within the ALX Series the non-keyed functions include the ALX10 ANSI F75 passage lock and the ALX40 ANSI F76 privacy lock, which take the same Rhodes lever and finish so the suite reads as one set. If you are matching to a different brand, the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 non-handed cylindrical passage lever and the Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 passage/closet cylindrical lever; both share the Grade 2 rating with the ALX70 Rhodes, and the ALX70 itself is non-handed.
    22) Can I use a Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance lever in place of a Schlage ALX70 Rhodes on an apartment building corridor?
Check the grade before you do. The Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, while the Schlage ALX70 Rhodes is Grade 2 and rated heavy duty. Commercial corridor and common-area specifications commonly call for Grade 2 or better, and the AUS00 sits a grade below that. The Callan Artino and Callan Bennett entrance leversets are Grade 3 as well.
    23) What do I use instead of a keyed ALX70 Rhodes lever on a patient room or holding room that cannot have a lockable lever?
An asylum function is what those openings usually take. The Dexter C1000 asylum lock is an ANSI F87 asylum function, Grade 1, for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 heavy duty asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. Both are keyed on both sides rather than giving a free inside lever; the ALX70 Rhodes keeps the inside lever always free for immediate egress, which is the opposite behavior.
    24) Is there a keypad lever I can use instead of a keyed Schlage ALX70 Rhodes so I stop reissuing keys?
The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with a double combination for 1-1/8 to 2 inch doors. The Schlage ALX70 Rhodes is a mechanical, non-electronic lock with a key cylinder outside and two keys included. A keypad changes credential management to a code rather than a key, so it will not tie into an existing Schlage key system the way the ALX70 does with its 6-pin C keyway cylinder.
    25) I need an electrified lever on an access control door - what takes the place of a Schlage ALX70 Rhodes there?
The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock at 12VAC/DC, offered with an NZ lever and D rose, for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. The Schlage ALX70 Rhodes is a mechanical, non-electronic lock, so it cannot be released by an access control system. Schlage notes the ALX Series suites with ND Series Grade 1 locks, which add four electrified options if you want the same lever family across both the mechanical and access controlled openings.
    26) What finishes does the Schlage ALX Rhodes lever come in, and is there an antimicrobial option?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. The 626AM is the one to specify for healthcare or food service where high-touch surfaces are part of the infection control spec.
    27) How many keys ship with a Schlage ALX keyed lever lock?
Two keys come with each keyed ALX lock ordered with a cylinder. If you are ordering less cylinder (the B, J, or L preps), no keys are involved because you are supplying the core or cylinder yourself.
    28) What is a Schlage ALX lever lock made of, and will the lever droop over time?
Zinc and steel construction. The lever rides on a deep-drawn spindle with five points of engagement, which is what stops the droop and wobble that shows up on lighter levers after a few years of traffic. Grade 1 compression springs handle the return.
    29) Does a Baldwin Estate 5103 lever work as a replacement for a Schlage ALX70 Rhodes?
No. The Baldwin Estate 5103 comes as a passage lever, a privacy lever, and left- and right-hand half dummy levers on a 5048 rose - none of them keyed. The ALX70 Rhodes is a keyed single-cylinder lock with a key cylinder outside and a push button inside. The 5103 will match a decorative program on interior doors, but it cannot secure an opening that needs a key.
    30) What dummy lever pairs with a Schlage ALX70 Rhodes on the inactive leaf of a pair of doors?
The ALX Series lists ALX170 single dummy trim and ALX172 double dummy trim, which carry the same Rhodes lever and finish as the keyed lock. Across brands, the BEST 7KC single dummy trim is Grade 2 medium duty and the BEST 9K 1DT single dummy trim is Grade 1 heavy duty; the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy. A dummy has no latch and is surface mounted as a pull, so it does not need the 2-3/4 inch backset bore the ALX70 uses.
