Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX70P TLR 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does a classroom function lock work, and is the ALX70 the right one for a school door?
Classroom function means the key controls the outside lever only: key in the outside cylinder locks or unlocks that lever, and the inside lever is always free so anyone can walk out. There's no thumbturn on the inside, so nobody can lock the door from within the room. That's the ANSI F84 function. If you want the teacher to be able to lock the door from inside the classroom during a lockdown, F84 is not it, you want a classroom security function such as the Dexter C1000 Classroom Security lever.
2) Does the Schlage ALX70 come with a 2-3/8 inch backset latch, or only 2-3/4?
Both. The ALX70 ships standard with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch (1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner face), and you can select a 2-3/8 inch backset deadlatch instead at no change to the lock. The 2-3/8 choices come in 1 x 2-1/4 square corner or round corner. Pick the backset off the existing bore in the door, 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 are the two you'll find in the field.
3) Do I have to order a handed version of the Schlage ALX70 for a left hand door?
No handing to specify. The ALX70 is non-handed, so one part covers left and right hand openings and you can stock a single lock for a whole building.
4) Can I get the Schlage ALX70 to work on my existing small format interchangeable core system?
Yes. Cylinder choice is part of the order: B for SFIC less core, J for FSIC less core, L less conventional cylinder, or P for a factory 6-pin conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. If you already run SFIC or FSIC cores, order the less-core option and drop your own core in. The ALX chassis also accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats, and takes Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders where you need high security.
5) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Schlage ALX70 classroom lever lock?
The Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and a 2-3/4 inch backset, which matches the ALX70's Grade 2 rating, classroom function, and 2-3/4 inch backset. Both are keyed cylindrical lever locks where the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key. If a facility is already keyed to a Schlage C keyway, the AG03 ships in that keyway and the ALX70 offers a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder option as well.
6) Is there a Grade 1 classroom cylindrical lever lock instead of a Grade 2?
The Dexter C1000 Series classroom lock is a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever with a clutching lever design and a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. The Schlage ALX70 is Grade 2 and carries a field selectable Vandlgard feature that lets the outside lever spin freely when locked, convertible in the field back to non-Vandlgard engagement. Both perform the classroom function, with the outside lever locked and unlocked by key.
7) What lock should be used when the teacher needs to lock the classroom door from inside without opening it?
The Dexter C1000 Series classroom security lock is a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever in the classroom security function, which uses a second keyed cylinder on the inside to lock the outside lever from within the room. The Schlage ALX70 is the standard classroom function, ANSI F84, with the key cylinder outside only and a single cylinder keyed configuration, so the outside lever is locked from the corridor side.
8) What is the difference between a classroom lever and a storeroom lever on a school corridor door?
On the Schlage ALX70 classroom function the outside lever is locked and unlocked by the key and stays in whichever state it was left, with the inside lever always free. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever and a 1-3/8 to 2 inch door thickness range; a storeroom outside lever stays locked at all times and the key only retracts the latch. Choose classroom where staff need to leave the outside lever unlocked during the day, and storeroom where the door must never be left unsecured.
9) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ALX, and can I turn it off?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely when the lock is secured, so kicking or hanging on the lever doesn't transfer force into the chassis. It's field selectable on the ALX70, and field reversible back to standard locked-lever engagement, so one lock covers a high abuse corridor and a low traffic office without a different part number.
10) Can I key several Schlage ALX70 locks alike across a building?
Yes. Keying is chosen on the order: keyed different is standard, or keyed alike for multiple locks on one key, and there's a field for your key code if you're adding to an existing system. Two keys come with the lock. If you're running your own core program, choose the None option with an SFIC or FSIC less-core cylinder.
11) Should I use the Schlage ALX70 or step up to a Grade 1 classroom lock?
The ALX70 is a Grade 2, heavy duty rated cylindrical lock with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs, which suits classrooms, offices and multi-family corridors. On a high traffic institutional opening where the spec calls for Grade 1, the Dexter C1000 classroom lever is the Grade 1 equivalent and covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Schlage's own ND Series is the Grade 1 step up and the ALX suites with it, so levers and finishes stay consistent across a building that mixes both.
12) If a Schlage ALX70 fails in a few years, do I have to replace the whole lock?
No. The ALX is built modular: one chassis fits all functions and cores, and the lever and function kits are separate. That means you can change a classroom lock to a storeroom or entrance function in the field without buying new hardware, or swap a damaged lever alone. Captured screws in the latch, strike and inside spring cage keep loose parts out of the service call.
13) I need a Grade 2 classroom lever but not Schlage keyways, what else is there?
Cal-Royal's AG03 classroom lever is a Grade 2 alternative with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, which matches the ALX70's standard backset if the door is already bored for it. If the room only needs to be secured from a key with no inside locking at all, the Cal-Royal AG05 storeroom lever is Grade 2 with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and Hager's 2580 storeroom lever is a Grade 2 option for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors.
14) Do the Schlage ALX levers match the ND Series levers already on my other doors?
Yes. The ALX lever designs are suited to the Schlage ND Series Grade 1 locks, and the ALX suites with ND, so a building that runs ND on its heavy openings can put ALX70 classroom locks on the lighter ones and keep the same lever look and finish throughout. Ten lever designs and two rose designs, the rose determined by which lever you pick.
15) Which lever lock suits an office door where the occupant locks up with a button rather than a key?
The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever in the entry/office function, and the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a 1-3/8 to 2 inch door thickness range. The Schlage ALX70 is the classroom function, ANSI F84, where the outside lever is locked and unlocked only by key from outside; the push button on the inside is not the locking control an entry/office lock provides. Use an entry/office lock where the occupant secures the door from inside, and the ALX70 where lockdown is controlled by keyholders.
16) What matching non-keyed lever should be used on the closet and utility doors alongside a keyed classroom lock?
The Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical passage lever with a non-handed design, and the Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever in the passage/closet function. Both are non-keyed and match the Schlage ALX70's Grade 2 rating and non-handed design, so the same door prep serves a corridor classroom door and the storage doors around it. The ALX70 is the keyed classroom function with two keys supplied.
17) Does a Grade 3 entrance leverset work as a substitute for a Grade 2 commercial classroom lock?
No. The Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range, and the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset; both are entrance function, not classroom. The Schlage ALX70 is a Grade 2 heavy duty commercial classroom lock, ANSI F84, so a Grade 3 entrance lever changes both the cycle rating and the way the door is secured.
18) Which cylindrical lever lock should be used on a patient or holding room instead of a classroom lock?
The Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock is a Grade 1 cylindrical lock in the F87 asylum function with a 1-3/8 to 2 inch door thickness range, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 heavy duty asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. Asylum function keys both sides so neither lever operates without a key. The Schlage ALX70 keeps the inside lever always free for immediate egress, which is what a classroom corridor door requires and what a controlled room does not.
19) What Grade 1 cylindrical lever should be specified where a classroom lock will see abuse on a vandal prone opening?
The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever in the passage/closet function, fire rated, with a 1-3/4 to 2 inch door thickness range, but it is non-keyed. The Schlage ALX70 is a Grade 2 keyed classroom lock with a field selectable Vandlgard feature that lets the locked outside lever rotate freely rather than transmit force into the chassis, and it accommodates 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Where the opening must stay keyed, the ALX70 with Vandlgard is the abuse-resistant path; where it is a non-keyed opening on a thicker door, the CL3110 covers that range.
20) Can a keypad leverset replace a keyed classroom lever lock?
A keypad lever changes how the door is controlled rather than substituting for a key system. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set in the passage function with a 1-1/8 to 2 inch door thickness range. The Schlage ALX70 is a non-electronic Grade 2 classroom lock that accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats and can be ordered SFIC or FSIC less core, so it drops into an existing master key system that a keypad lever does not join.
21) Which lever locks cover a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches when a classroom lock will not fit?
The Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers, fire rated, covering 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage lever covering 1-3/8 to 2 inches. The Schlage ALX70 accommodates 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors with minimal chassis adjustment, so an oversized door needs one of the wider-range chassis, noting those two are passage rather than keyed classroom function.
22) What is the difference between a Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever and an AG03 classroom lever?
The Cal-Royal AG00 is an entrance lever, Grade 2, 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, with a 2-3/8 inch backset and a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range; the Cal-Royal AG03 is the classroom lever in the same AG Series, Grade 2, 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Schlage ALX70 is the classroom function and ships with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch as standard, with 2-3/8 inch backset latches available.
23) What electrified cylindrical lever is used where a classroom door needs to release from an access control system?
The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock at 12VAC/DC with an NZ lever and D rose, covering 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. The Schlage ALX70 is a non-electronic mechanical classroom lock; where an opening needs to be released remotely, the electrified lever is the substitute, and the ALX70 covers the mechanically keyed openings on the same corridor.
24) What finishes does the Schlage ALX70 classroom lever come in?
Ten: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. Every one of those is available with any of the four cylinder options. 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial default; 626AM is the one to specify for healthcare and food service where an antimicrobial surface is called for.
25) What are the Schlage ALX70 lock parts made of?
Zinc and steel, with a stainless steel latchbolt. That's the corrosion-relevant answer for exterior-facing corridor doors and for coastal work; the lock also complies with Florida Building Code and Miami Dade hurricane requirements.
26) What should be ordered for the dummy side of a pair where one leaf carries a classroom lock?
The BEST 7KC Series 1DT is a Grade 2 medium duty single dummy trim cylindrical lever and the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy trim lever; the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever from the 5400 Series. The Schlage ALX Series itself covers the inactive leaf with the ALX170 single dummy trim and ALX172 double dummy trim, which carry the same lever designs and finishes as the ALX70 classroom function.
27) Is a residential-style lever like the Kwikset Breton or a Baldwin Estate lever an alternative to a commercial classroom lock?
They serve different openings. The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 passage lever with a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 privacy lever; the Baldwin Estate 5103 comes as passage, privacy and half dummy with a 5048 rose. None of those is a keyed classroom function. The Schlage ALX70 is a Grade 2 heavy duty commercial classroom lock in zinc and steel, keyed with a single cylinder outside, and is UL and cUL listed for use on labeled fire doors.
28) How do you convert Yale or Accentra hardware to the same key system as a Schlage keyed lever?
The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which lets Yale trim accept a Schlage cylinder so both run on one keyway. The Schlage ALX70 can be ordered with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, or less core as SFIC or FSIC when the cores are supplied from an existing system, and it accepts all Schlage plus five competitive cylinder formats.
29) Is an escutcheon lever trim the same thing as a cylindrical classroom lock?
No. The Imperial USA ED-EL500HD is heavy duty escutcheon lever trim in the entry function from the ED-500 Series, and the Corbin Russwin 585F715 is a Grade 1 lock lever for the ED8000 pushpad exit device; both are trim that mounts to a device or door rather than a complete lock chassis. The Schlage ALX70 is a complete cylindrical lockset with its own chassis, deadlatch and strike, in the classroom function.
