Schlage ALX SERIES OVERVIEW

The proven AL Series has evolved to ALX

As a Grade 2 lock, the AL Series has always offered a combination of strength and durability alongside Schlage trusted key system options at a price point favorable to any application. Though these qualities remain, the lock has changed. ALX Series' features now deliver flexibility and value beyond strength and security. X Factor qualities, born from modular design, define a lock that exceeds expectations. AL Series' evolution to the ALX Series is a revolution in lock design.

Why modular design is important

The Schlage ALX Series gives you the ability to use it as you would any other lock: ordered and delivered as a complete, configured product ready for installation. However, in its new modular design, ALX Series offers you the flexibility to utilize the separate components of chassis, function and lever packaged kits to create a lock to meet your needs on demand. So whether you are a distributor wanting to offer same day pickup on configured locks in uncommon levers and finishes, a locksmith wanting truck stock solutions that eliminate call backs, or a facility manager wanting to repurpose rooms and change lock functions without the expense of new hardware, ALX Series can work for you.

Schlage ALX70P SPA 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ALX70 classroom function actually do when someone locks it?
Classroom function on the ALX70 means the outside lever is locked and unlocked only by key, from the outside. There is no button or thumbturn on the corridor side, so a teacher cannot accidentally leave the room unlocked or lock themselves out by pressing something. The inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room can get out immediately whether the lock is set or not. The latchbolt is deadlocking. It carries the ANSI/BHMA F84 function designation, which is what a spec writer will call for on a classroom opening.
2) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ALX and do I have to decide before I order?
Vandlgard is a clutching lever: when the outside lever is locked, forcing it down just spins it freely instead of transmitting the load into the chassis. It is the feature that survives students hanging off a locked classroom lever. On the ALX70 it is field selectable, so you can convert between Vandlgard and standard non-Vandlgard locked lever engagement in place, in the door, without buying a different lock. You do not have to lock that decision in on the order form.
3) Do I have to buy Schlage cylinders for the ALX70, or can I key it into an existing system?
The ALX chassis accepts all Schlage cylinder formats plus five competitive formats, so an existing keyway does not force you off the lock. Four cylinder configurations are orderable: P for a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, B for small format interchangeable core less core, J for full size interchangeable core less core, and L less conventional cylinder. The two less-core options and the L option let a locksmith drop in cores already keyed to the building's system. Used with Primus XP cylinders the lock becomes high security, and those cylinders are UL 437 listed.
4) Is the ALX70 handed? I need to know before I order for both swings.
Non-handed. One ALX70 works on a left or right hand door, so a property manager ordering for a floor of mixed swings orders one part number and a locksmith stocking truck inventory carries one lock. Nothing needs to be reversed in the field for handing.
5) Is a Grade 2 classroom lock enough for a school corridor, or should I be buying Grade 1?
The ALX70 is Grade 2, certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, and rated heavy duty with a stainless steel latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs. For most classroom and office openings that is the right call. Where a spec sheet or a district standard demands Grade 1, ZenSupply carries the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lock, a Grade 1 cylindrical lever for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors with a clutching lever. Schlage's own Grade 1 answer is the ND Series, which the ALX suites with, so you can run ND on the high traffic corridor openings and ALX elsewhere and keep the lever and finish consistent across the building.
6) I need a lock for an office, not a classroom. Is the ALX70 the wrong one?
Probably, yes. The ALX70 is classroom function, F84, keyed from outside with no inside locking control at all, so an office occupant cannot secure their own door from inside. For an office you want ALX50, the F82 entrance/office function, or ALX53, F109 entrance. Storerooms that should stay locked at all times take ALX80, F86. Same chassis, same levers, same finishes across all of them, so mixing functions across a floor still looks and keys consistent. If you already own an ALX chassis, the patent pending design lets the function be set up in the field rather than replaced.
7) What is a Grade 1 alternative to the Schlage ALX70 classroom lever for a high-traffic school corridor?
The Dexter C1000 Series classroom cylindrical lever lock is a Grade 1 classroom-function keyed lever with a clutching design, fitting doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Schlage ALX70 is a Grade 2 classroom lock under ANSI/BHMA F84, keyed outside lever with the inside lever always free. Both cover the same classroom opening; the Dexter carries the higher ANSI grade, while the ALX70 offers field-selectable Vandlgard and one chassis across functions.
8) The classroom function is wrong for this door - the room needs to stay locked at all times. What lever should I use instead?
For an opening that stays locked with free egress, use a storeroom function rather than classroom. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Schlage ALX70 is a classroom function where the key in the outside lever locks or unlocks that lever, so it can be left unlocked between periods.
9) For a lockdown requirement where the door must be lockable from inside the room, is the ALX70 the right lock?
No - for keyed lockdown from inside the classroom, the function is classroom security, not classroom. The Dexter C1000 Series classroom security lever is a Grade 1 clutching keyed lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, keyed on both sides so an occupant can lock the outside lever without leaving the room. The Schlage ALX70 is the standard classroom function with a key cylinder outside only and the inside lever always free for egress.
10) Our doors are 2 inches thick. Which lever locks cover that when the ALX70 does not?
The Schlage ALX70 accommodates 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness with minimal chassis adjustment. For thicker doors, the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet lever covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Hager 2580 Grade 2 storeroom lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Match the function you need against those ranges before ordering.
11) Can I get a batch of Schlage ALX70 classroom locks all keyed alike?
Yes. Keying is specified on the order: keyed different is standard, keyed alike is selectable for running multiple locks on one key, and there is a no-keying option to pair with the less-core and less-cylinder configurations when a locksmith is supplying cores. If your facility already has a key code on file, there is a field to enter it so the locks arrive cut to your system. Each keyed lock includes two keys.
12) What other Grade 2 classroom lever locks could I use instead of the Schlage ALX70?
The closest cross-brand equivalent ZenSupply carries is the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever, Grade 2, with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the same keyway and backset the ALX70 uses in its P cylinder configuration. Where the two differ is configurability: the ALX70's chassis takes SFIC and FSIC cores and its Vandlgard clutching is field reversible, which matters if you are standardizing a facility or keying into an interchangeable core system. If you want a Grade 1 alternative instead, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lock is the one to look at.
13) What finishes does the Schlage ALX70 Sparta lever come in, and will it match my other doors?
Ten finishes are available on the ALX70 with the Sparta lever: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. Every one of those pairs with all four cylinder configurations. 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial default. The 626AM antimicrobial variant is the one healthcare and school facilities ask for on high touch openings. Since the ALX suites with Schlage's ND Series, the finish will carry across if some of your openings run Grade 1 ND locks.
14) Does the ALX70 come as a complete lock or do I have to assemble it?
Either way. The ALX70 can be bought factory configured and ready to install, ordered less levers, or bought as chassis, function and lever kits assembled on site. One chassis fits all functions and all cores, which is what lets a distributor or locksmith stock a small number of parts and build uncommon lever and finish combinations on demand instead of waiting on a factory order. Captured screws in the latch, strike and inside spring cage mean no loose small parts to drop during install, and the deep-drawn spindle engages the lever at five points to keep it from drooping.
15) Is the Schlage ALX70 an electronic or access control lock?
No, the ALX70 is a purely mechanical cylindrical lock, key operated with no wiring, no reader and no power. If you need an electrified cylindrical lever, ZenSupply carries the Corbin Russwin CL33903, a Grade 1 fail safe electrified lever running 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. For a standalone keypad lever with no wiring, look at the Delaney LP250 electronic keypad leverlock. Note that Schlage's ND Series, which suites with the ALX, adds four electrified options if you want to stay in one key system and lever family.
16) What should I order for an office door that needs a push-button lock instead of a classroom lock?
For an office where staff lock the door from inside, an entrance/office function is the match. The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever with entry/office function, the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Dexter C1000 entry/office is a Grade 1 clutching keyed lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Schlage ALX70 is a classroom function locked only by key from the outside, with no inside push button governing the outside lever.
17) Can I use a passage lever from another brand to match the ALX70 on the unkeyed doors in the same corridor?
Passage levers pair with a keyed classroom lock on adjacent openings. Grade 2 options include the Falcon B101 non-handed cylindrical passage lever, the Hager 2510 with the Withnell design for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Accentra 5301LN Augusta in the 5300 Series. Grade 1 options include the Falcon K101 non-handed passage lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 vandal resistant passage/closet lever for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. The Schlage ALX70 itself is non-handed and Grade 2, so the trim style rather than handing drives the visual match.
18) Is a Grade 3 entrance lever an acceptable substitute for a Grade 2 classroom lock like the ALX70?
They are different functions and different grades. The Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset - both lock from the inside rather than by key from the corridor. The Schlage ALX70 is tested to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2 in the classroom function, where only a key in the outside lever changes its locked state. Where a spec calls for keyed control of the outside lever, the entrance-function Grade 3 levers do not perform the same job.
19) We use Yale hardware but the keys are Schlage. Is there an adapter, or do we have to switch locks?
The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which lets Yale locks accept a Schlage cylinder. If the goal is instead to standardize the lock itself on a Schlage key system, the Schlage ALX70 classroom lever accepts all Schlage cylinders plus five competitive cylinder formats, and ships in conventional 6-pin C keyway, SFIC less core, FSIC less core, or less conventional cylinder configurations.
20) What looks like a substitute for the ALX70 but will not work on a classroom door?
Dummy trim is the common mix-up: the BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim is a Grade 2 non-keyed medium duty lever, the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 non-keyed heavy duty dummy, and the Callan Bentley is a Grade 2 dummy lever. All are pull trim with no latch or cylinder. Also distinct is the Delaney LP250, a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock. The Schlage ALX70 is a keyed mechanical classroom lock with a deadlocking latchbolt and no electronics.
21) For a utility or holding room that needs no inside trim function, what is the alternative to a classroom lever?
An asylum function is the match for rooms controlled entirely from outside. The Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock is ANSI F87, Grade 1, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 heavy duty asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. The Schlage ALX70 is ANSI F84 classroom, where the inside lever always stays free for immediate egress.
22) Which classroom lever should a locksmith stock for a 2-3/8 inch backset door?
The Schlage ALX70 ships standard with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch but is orderable with 2-3/8 inch backset deadlatches in 1-1/8 inch x 2-1/4 inch square corner, 1 inch x 2-1/4 inch square corner, or 1 inch x 2-1/4 inch round corner faces. The Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is built to a 2-3/4 inch backset, while the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is a 2-3/8 inch backset unit with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway. For a 2-3/8 inch prep in classroom function, the ALX70 with the alternate latch is the direct fit.
23) What is the ALX70 lock body made of?
Zinc and steel, with a stainless steel latchbolt. Schlage rates the ALX Series above Grade 2 strength on the back of that latchbolt and Grade 1 compression springs in the chassis. It is a commercial lock, not a residential one.
24) Can a residential-grade lever go on the same corridor as the ALX70 to save on the interior doors?
The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever is Grade 3 for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy lever is Grade 3 across the same thickness range. The Schlage ALX70 is a commercial Grade 2 heavy duty lock. On a corridor door carrying commercial traffic and a fire rating, the Grade 3 levers sit at a different duty class, so keep them to low-traffic interior openings such as closets and restrooms.
