Schlage Commercial 09-900 Thumbturn Mortise Cylinder, Non-handed

Non-handed. The 09-900 thumbturn mortise cylinder turns either direction and installs the same way on a left hand or right hand door, so you order it without calling out swing or hand. When you're buying several for a building, that means one part number covers every opening regardless of how the doors are hung. Length and finish are the only two things you actually have to decide.

A thumbturn mortise cylinder like the Schlage 09-900 threads into a mortise lock body in place of a key cylinder and is operated by hand instead of by key. It goes on the secure side of the opening, typically the inside, so someone can throw or retract the deadbolt without carrying a key. Use it where you want free egress and hand operation from inside and key control only from the outside. If you need key operation on that side of the door, or the door is one where nobody should be able to lock it by hand, order a keyed Schlage mortise cylinder of the same length instead.

Four lengths: 1-1/8, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 1-3/4 inches. 1-1/8 inch is the standard mortise cylinder length and is what most commercial mortise locks with a plain cylinder collar take. You step up to the longer sizes when there's material stacked in front of the lock, a thick escutcheon or decorative trim, a heavy plate, or a rose that sets the cylinder further out from the lock case. The cylinder has to reach far enough for the cam to engage the lock while its face still finishes flush with the trim.

Back out the cylinder that's in the lock now and measure it end to end, from the outer face to the back where the cam sits, then match that to one of the four sizes the 09-900 is built in: 1-1/8, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 or 1-3/4 inches. Don't guess from door thickness, mortise cylinder length is set by the trim in front of the lock, not by the door. Too short and the cylinder sits recessed behind the trim and the cam may not pick up the lock; too long and it stands proud of the trim, which looks wrong and gives a wrench something to grab. Check that the cam on the lock you're feeding matches Schlage's before you order.

There's no keyway on it and nothing to key. The 09-900 is turn operated only, so it doesn't take a key, doesn't need a keyway called out on the order, and doesn't consume a change key or master key position in your system. That matters on a facility rekey: only the keyed cylinder on the other side of the mortise lock gets pinned to your system, and the thumbturn side just gets replaced with the length and finish you need.

Just the cylinder. The Schlage 09-900 is a replacement part, the thumbturn cylinder alone, and it goes into a mortise lock body you already have in the door. No lock case, no trim, no strike, no lever comes with it. If the problem is a lock that's binding or a latch that won't throw, this isn't the fix; if the problem is a broken, worn, or wrong-finish turn piece in a working mortise lock, this is exactly the part.

Nine finishes, and every one of them is built in all four lengths, so matching finish across a building never forces you into a different length. The range covers 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome and 643E aged bronze. 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial default and what most existing Schlage openings will already be wearing. That's 36 length and finish combinations in total, which means a mixed building with different trim depths on different doors can still finish out uniform.

Commercial. Schlage builds the 09-900 for its commercial mortise lock line, which is what you want on apartment entries, offices, stairwells and any opening seeing daily multi-user traffic rather than a single household's use. Residential deadbolt turns aren't interchangeable with it, they mount to a residential deadbolt body and won't thread into a commercial mortise case.
