Schlage 23-003 S123 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage 23-003 cylinder fit a Schlage D85 knob lock?
That is the lock it is made for. The 23-003 is a commercial 6-pin key cylinder for Schlage D85 knobs, the faculty restroom function in the D Series. It is non-handed, so nothing changes between a left hand and a right hand door and there is no handing to call out on the order. What you do specify is the keyway section and the finish.
2) Can I convert a Schlage knob lock to faculty restroom function by putting in a 23-003 cylinder?
No, and this is worth getting straight before you order. A key cylinder controls what the key turns, not how the lock behaves. The faculty restroom function lives in the D85 chassis; the 23-003 is the replacement key cylinder that drops into it. Put this cylinder into a different D Series function and you have rekeyed that lock, not changed what it does. Changing function means changing the lockset.
3) Does the Schlage 23-003 cylinder come keyed, or do I have to have it cut?
It ships 0-bitted. Every finish and keyway combination of the 23-003 is supplied uncombinated, so a locksmith pins it to your bitting and cuts the two keys that come in the box. That is the version you want when a restroom has to sit under an existing building master. Not every cylinder in this category works that way. The Falcon A23161-05 G, a key-in-lever cylinder for Falcon RU/T locks, arrives keyed different with two cut keys in a 6-pin G keyway.
4) Which keyway do I order for a Schlage 23-003 cylinder?
Order the same section the rest of your building is keyed in. The 23-003 accepts any Schlage keyway, and the choices run from the classic sections C, CE, E, F, FG and G through the numbered sections including C123, C245, S124 and S235. Sections are not interchangeable, so a C section cylinder will not take an S section key and vice versa. If nobody on site knows which section you have, get your locksmith to identify an existing key before the order goes in.
5) I am replacing cylinders across a building with mixed trim finishes. Can the Schlage 23-003 be matched to what is already on the doors?
Four finishes are available on the 23-003: 626 satin chrome, 606 satin brass, 622 matte black and 643E aged bronze. The front housing is the part that shows once the cylinder is in the knob, and Schlage produces that housing in the lock finishes, so the cylinder face reads as part of the trim instead of standing out against it. Finish and keyway are chosen together, so specify both per opening rather than ordering one finish across the whole job.
6) Can a Schlage 23-003 cylinder be used on Schlage mortise locks or deadbolts, or only on knobs?
It is built on Schlage's modular cylinder platform, so it is not tied to one lock type. It fits Schlage locksets and deadbolts and accepts any Schlage keyway, and swapping the tailpiece, cam or rear housing converts a single cylinder between mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob use. Six rear housing lengths cover thicker doors. As supplied it is set up for D85 knobs, so for the other formats you order the conversion parts alongside it.
7) Is the Schlage 23-003 cylinder heavy duty enough for a public restroom that gets keyed access all day?
Brass and stainless steel construction, specified as commercial rather than residential hardware. That is the material set Schlage uses for the cylinder that goes into D85 restroom locks in schools, offices and public buildings. For a facility standardizing on one key system, the other advantage is that it is the Schlage part in a Schlage keyway, so it goes into the existing master system rather than sitting outside it as an aftermarket cylinder would.
8) The opening has a mortise lock rather than a knob or deadbolt. What cylinder covers that?
The Schlage 23-003 is a 6-pin cylinder for Schlage locksets and deadbolts and is compatible with Schlage D85 knobs. For a mortise body, the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway, so it stays inside Schlage C keying. From Corbin Russwin, the 1000 Grade 1 Series mortise cylinder is 1-1/2 inch with an A02 straight cam, and the 1070 Grade 1 Series is a 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam. Cam style and cylinder length are what match the cylinder to the mortise body, so confirm both against the lock you are servicing.
9) Will a Schlage 23-003 cylinder work as a rim cylinder on an exit device?
Not in the form it is supplied. The 23-003 comes configured for Schlage D85 knob locks; the modular platform does convert to rim, but that means ordering the rim tailpiece, cam and rear housing with it. If you want a rim cylinder outright, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing carrying a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, and tailpiece length is what exit devices are fussy about.
10) Can I use a Schlage 23-003 cylinder in an aluminum storefront door?
Wrong part for that opening. The 23-003 is a knob cylinder for Schlage D85 locks, and a narrow stile storefront door takes a deadlock or deadlatch, not a knob lock. For narrow stile work the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder is Grade 1 and rated to a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is what a storefront stile leaves you. If the door uses a cylinder pull instead, the Adams Rite 4025 is a five pin cylinder pull with through-screws for the MS1847 deadlock, and the 4024 is the trim plate mounted version for the same lock.
11) Our facility is keyed on small format interchangeable cores. Is the Schlage 23-003 an interchangeable core?
No. The 23-003 is a conventional 6-pin cylinder, supplied 0-bitted and pinned on a bench, not a core that pulls with a control key. On an interchangeable core site, maintenance rekeys an opening in seconds without taking the lock apart, which this cylinder cannot do. If that is how your facility is set up, the BEST 1C Series standard 5-pin core, the BEST 1CB Peaks 150 Series core, or the 1CDF, a drill resistant patented 7-pin core in brass, are the direction to go.
12) Is a Kaba Ilco universal key-in-knob cylinder the same thing as a Schlage 23-003?
They are not the same part, and the difference matters if you run one key system. The 23-003 is the Schlage cylinder for D85 knob locks, cut to Schlage keyways and supplied 0-bitted so it can be pinned into a Schlage system. The Kaba Ilco 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder and the 1539 is a universal key-in-knob and lever cylinder, aftermarket parts built to cover a spread of different locks. Those are the right call when you are patching a mixed building; staying on the Schlage cylinder is the right call when every key on site is already Schlage.
13) Is there a 6-pin cylinder from another brand that also ships with two cut keys?
The Falcon A23161-05 G is a key in lever cylinder from the RU/T series with a 6-pin G keyway, keyed different, supplied with 2 cut keys. The Schlage 23-003 is also a 6-pin cylinder supplied with 2 keys, and it accepts any Schlage keyway and fits Schlage locksets and deadbolts. The practical difference is the lock family each one is cut and cammed for: order the Falcon part for Falcon RU/T lever locks and the 23-003 where the opening is Schlage.
14) We key our buildings on interchangeable cores. What do we order instead of a Schlage 23-003?
The 23-003 is a fixed 6-pin cylinder that accepts any Schlage keyway and comes with 2 keys, so it is pinned and stays in the lock. If the standard is interchangeable core, BEST offers the 1C Series standard 5-pin cylinder core, the Peaks 1CB 150 Series interchangeable core cylinder, and the 1CDF drill resistant preferred patented interchangeable core, a 7-pin brass 150 Series core. Those cores are pulled and swapped as a unit, which is a different rekeying workflow from pinning a conventional cylinder.
15) We standardize on Schlage but some openings are L9000 mortise locks. Is there a cylinder that keeps those on the same program?
The Corbin Russwin 1080 Grade 1 Series is a 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam. The Schlage 23-003 is also a 6-pin cylinder, non-handed, that fits Schlage locksets and deadbolts. The 1080 is a large format interchangeable core mortise cylinder, so the core is removable, while the 23-003 is a conventional cylinder that accepts any Schlage keyway.
16) Do I need a separate part for a rim application, or can the Schlage 23-003 be adapted?
The 23-003 is a Schlage modular cylinder, and one cylinder converts to three cylinder types by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, covering mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications in any Schlage keyway. If the preference is a dedicated rim part rather than converting one on the bench, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing in the 3000 series with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece. Both are 6-pin, so the decision is whether the shop stocks conversion components or finished rim housings.
17) Are the Adams Rite 4024, 4025 and 4026 cylinder pulls an alternative to the Schlage 23-003?
They are a different class of part. The Adams Rite 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting and the 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws, both designed for use with the Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock or deadlatch; the 4026 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull for the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock or deadlatch. Each combines the pull and the cylinder into one assembly for a specific Adams Rite lock body. The Schlage 23-003 is a 6-pin cylinder on its own, supplied with 2 keys, that fits Schlage locksets and deadbolts, so it goes into an existing lock rather than replacing the trim.
18) We need something that fills the cylinder hole without keying the door. Can the Schlage 23-003 be used that way?
The 23-003 is a keyed 6-pin cylinder supplied with 2 keys, so it puts the door on a key. Where the requirement is a non-keying filler for a rim prep, the BEST 12E Series dummy rim cylinder has a 1-5/32 inch diameter and is the part built for that role. Confirm the prep diameter before ordering, since the dummy is sized to the rim opening rather than to a lockset.
19) Half the doors in the portfolio are Sargent or other non-Schlage knobs. Does one cylinder cover the whole property?
The Schlage 23-003 accepts any Schlage keyway and fits Schlage locksets and deadbolts, so it covers the Schlage doors. For the rest, Kaba Ilco offers the 1579 knob and lever cylinder for Sargent, the 1539 Series key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, the 1599 key-in-knob replacement cylinder, and the 1549 Series key-in-deadbolt cylinder. Sorting the doors by lock brand first tells you how many of these part numbers the property actually needs.
20) Retrofitting an Emtek handleset or a Kwikset deadbolt. Is the Schlage 23-003 the cylinder for those?
The 23-003 is a commercial 6-pin cylinder built around Schlage keyways and Schlage locksets and deadbolts. For an Emtek handleset or outside deadbolt cylinder, the Medeco 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder, and the Medeco 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion rim type cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece; Emtek also lists its own CY4 cylinder. For Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder, and the Medeco 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. The tailpiece and motion type are what tie each of these to its lock, so match by lock brand rather than by pin count.
