Schlage 30-001 S123 112 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can one Schlage 30-001 cylinder cover mortise, rim and key-in-lever locks, or do I need three different cylinders?
The 30-001 is supplied set up as a mortise cylinder, but it sits on Schlage's modular platform: one cylinder converts to three different cylinder types by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, covering mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications. For a locksmith or a service van that is the whole point, you carry one cylinder body and the housings and cams rather than three separate part numbers. Two cut keys come with it.
2) Can I get a Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder in the same keyway as the rest of my building?
Almost certainly. Ordering runs by keyway, and the range covers the classic C, E, F and G sections, the CE, EF and FG combinations, and the multiplex groups from C123 through C345 and S123 through S345. The cylinder also supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so an existing master key chart can be carried onto new openings instead of restarted. Match the keyway to the keys already in your staff's hands before you worry about the finish.
3) Do I have to specify left or right hand when I order a Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder?
No handing to call out. The 30-001 is non-handed, so the same cylinder goes into a left or a right hand door and the only things you have to get right on the order are the keyway and the finish. On a mortise opening the handing lives in the lock case and the lever trim, never in the cylinder.
4) Our doors are thicker than standard. Will a Schlage modular mortise cylinder still reach the lock?
Yes, and you change the housing rather than the cylinder. The modular build accommodates thicker doors with six available rear housing lengths, so you get the projection the lock case needs without buying a different cylinder or a different keyway. The front housing, the part that shows on the outside of the door, is available in all finishes to match the locks.
5) Is the Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder certified to a commercial standard I can put on a submittal?
BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, and it is built as commercial hardware rather than residential. That is the line a facility hardware standard or a submittal wants, which matters if you are standardizing cylinders across a school, hospital or multi-family portfolio and need every opening to trace back to the same certification.
6) Does the cam have to match my lock, or will any six-pin mortise cylinder work?
The cam has to match, and this is where the wrong part gets ordered. Two cylinders can share the same 1-1/2 inch body and the same six pins and still not drive the lock: the Corbin Russwin 1000 at that length carries an A02 straight cam, while the Corbin Russwin 1080 at the same length carries the A01 Schlage L cam and is listed for Schlage L9000 mortise locks. On the Schlage 30-001 the cam is one of the modular parts you change, along with the tailpiece and rear housing, which is how a single cylinder body serves more than one lock. Identify the lock case first, then the cam.
7) We rekey units constantly. Is there an interchangeable core alternative to a conventional mortise cylinder?
The 30-001 is a conventional cylinder, so rekeying it means pinning it. Where turnover is high and you want the core pulled with a control key instead, the Corbin Russwin 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, with an A01 Schlage L cam and listed for Schlage L9000 mortise locks. For small format cores, the BEST 1C 5-pin standard core or the 1CB Peaks interchangeable core cylinder are the other route, and the 1CDF adds drill resistance on a patented 7-pin core. Conventional is fine where the keys stay put; interchangeable core earns its cost at the second turnover.
8) I need a rim cylinder for an exit device, not a mortise cylinder. Is the Schlage 30-001 the right part?
Not as supplied. The 30-001 comes configured as a mortise cylinder, which threads into the lock case, while a rim cylinder mounts through the door with a tailpiece reaching the back of the device. The modular design does convert to rim by changing the rear housing and tailpiece, so the same body and keyway can serve both if you are already stocking it. If you would rather buy the rim part outright, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece.
9) Will a Schlage commercial mortise cylinder work in an aluminum storefront door with an Adams Rite deadlock?
For narrow stile aluminum, order the Adams Rite cylinder built for that lock rather than a standard commercial mortise cylinder. The Adams Rite 4036 is a five-pin Grade 1 mortise cylinder listing a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, the 4024 and 4025 cylinder pulls are made for the MS1847 deadlock, and the 4026 pull covers the 5017 wood door deadlock. Adams Rite locks are cam specific and the stile leaves very little room behind the face, which is why the brand-matched part is the safer order on a glass front.
10) Can we get restricted keys on Schlage cylinders so tenants can't copy them at a hardware store?
Key control is a keyway decision made at order time. The 30-001 supports Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, and its feature set spans basic security and enhanced security. Primus XP is the patent protected, restricted side of that range, so blanks and duplication run through authorized channels; Classic sections are open and can be cut widely. If unauthorized copies are the problem you are actually solving, specify the restricted system when you place the order, because changing your mind later means repinning every cylinder in the building.
11) How do I keep my lever locks on the same key system as my mortise doors?
Two routes. The Schlage modular cylinder converts to key-in-lever or key-in-knob by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, so the same body and the same keyway you run on the mortise openings can serve the lever locks too. If you want a purpose built lever cylinder instead, the Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder for the RU/T series, 6-pin in the G keyway, keyed different with two cut keys. Holding one keyway across both lock types is what keeps a master key chart from sprawling into two systems.
12) Our mortise locks are Schlage L9000 and I need spare cylinders. How does the Corbin Russwin 1080 compare to the Schlage 30-001 for that opening?
Both are mortise cylinders that thread into the lock case and drive the lock through a cam. The Corbin Russwin CR1080-112-A01 is a 1080 Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, listed for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam, so the core is a large format interchangeable core that comes out with a control key. The Schlage 30-001 is a mortise cylinder built on the modular platform, where one cylinder converts to three different cylinder types by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, and it supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems. Decide on how you want the openings rekeyed: interchangeable core service on the Corbin Russwin, or conventional keying on a housing that can be reconfigured for mortise, rim or key-in-lever later.
13) I have a Corbin Russwin 1000 mortise cylinder in stock. Can I drop it into a lock that calls for a Schlage L cam?
Check the cam before you commit it to the job. The Corbin Russwin CR1000-112 is a 1000 Grade 1 series mortise cylinder at 1-1/2 inch length and it is built with an A02 straight cam, which is a different tail geometry from the cloverleaf-style cam a Schlage mortise lock hub expects. Where the lock needs the Schlage L cam, the Corbin Russwin CR1080-112-A01 is the one in the Corbin Russwin range listed with an A01 Schlage L cam for Schlage L9000 mortise locks, and the Corbin Russwin CR1070-114-A01 is a 1070 Grade 1 series 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam. The housing length and thread are only half the fit question; the cam decides whether the lock actually throws.
14) A 1-1/2 inch cylinder projects too far past the trim on my door. What shorter mortise cylinders are out there?
Two shorter mortise cylinders sit in the same class. The Corbin Russwin CR1070-114-A01 is a 1070 Grade 1 series 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam, and the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway. Going the other direction on a thick door, the Schlage modular cylinder accommodates thicker doors with six available lengths of rear housing. Measure from the face of the lock case to the finished face of the trim before you pick the length, since a cylinder that stands proud is as much a problem as one that will not reach the cam.
15) The building is keyed to a Schlage C keyway. Is there another brand of mortise cylinder that takes those keys?
Yes. The Detex MC65 is a 6-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder built to the Schlage C keyway at 1-1/8 inch. The Schlage 30-001 is also ordered in the C keyway, along with the sectional C keyways in that family such as C123, C124, C134 and C235, so an existing masterkey system can be carried across either way. If the openings are levers rather than mortise cases, the Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder in the RU/T series with a 6-pin G keyway supplied keyed different with 2 cut keys, which is a different keyway family and a different cylinder format from a mortise cylinder.
16) We are moving the campus to interchangeable cores. What are the options where the mortise locks currently take a conventional cylinder?
On the interchangeable core side, the BEST 1CB is a Peaks 1CB 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, the BEST 1CDF is a drill resistant preferred patented interchangeable core 7-pin brass cylinder in the 150 series, and the BEST 1C5 is a standard 5-pin cylinder core in the standard and premium cores range. Note that the 1C5 is the core itself, so it goes into a housing already prepped for that format rather than into a mortise case on its own. The Corbin Russwin CR1080-112-A01 is a complete 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, listed for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam, so it takes a large format core in a mortise body. The Schlage 30-001 is a conventional mortise cylinder that ships with 2 keys and is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, which is the certification line a facility spec will usually ask you to show.
17) I have a Corbin Russwin 3070 rim cylinder housing on the truck. Will that work in a mortise lock body?
No, and the difference is worth being clear on because the two get mixed up on the shelf. The Corbin Russwin 3070-178 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, and a rim cylinder mounts through the door with screws and drives an exit device or rim lock with that flat tailpiece. A mortise cylinder like the Schlage 30-001 threads into the lock case and turns a cam instead. The BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder with 1-5/32 inch diameter is a further step away, being a dummy. Where you want one platform to cover both, the Schlage modular cylinder is adaptable to mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing.
18) My supplier sent Kaba Ilco knob and lever cylinders when I ordered cylinders for mortise locks. Are those the same thing?
They are not interchangeable with a mortise cylinder. The Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, the 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder, and the 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent; the 1539, 1549 and 1579 are all listed with a deadbolt function. The Falcon A23161-05 G is likewise a key-in-lever cylinder in the RU/T series with a 6-pin G keyway. All of those seat inside a knob or lever chassis, while a mortise cylinder threads into the lock case. The Schlage 30-001 sits on a modular platform that is adaptable to mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications, so the same key system can follow you across all three door types.
19) We have apartment deadbolts and handlesets to rekey alongside the commercial mortise locks. Can the Medeco retrofit cylinders cover both?
Those Medeco parts are rim and retrofit cylinders aimed at residential-style hardware, not at mortise lock cases. The 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder, the 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, and the 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. The Emtek CY4 is a single cylinder in the Emtek parts range. For the mortise cases, stay with a mortise cylinder such as the Schlage 30-001, the Corbin Russwin CR1000-112 1000 Grade 1 series at 1-1/2 inch, or the Adams Rite 4036 Grade 1 on narrow stile doors.
