Schlage 30-001 S123 118 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder work in my Schlage L9000 mortise lock?
The 30-001 is built for Schlage L Series mortise locks, and it ships with the Schlage L cam already on it. The one exception is the L9060 exterior application, which this cylinder is not for. If the opening you're working on is an L9060 exterior, order a different cam/length combination for that function.
2) Which Schlage keyway do I order to match the rest of my building's keys?
Order the keyway that matches your existing system, not a default. The 30-001 is available in the Classic C keyway, the E, F, G, CE, EF and FG keyways, the Everest C-series sections (C123, C124, C125, C134, C135, C145, C234, C235, C245, C345) and the S-series sections (S123, S124, S125, S134, S135, S145, S234, S235, S345). Pull an existing key and read the section stamp, or get it from your keying schedule. The modular cylinder supports interchangeability across Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so a facility running more than one system can still standardize on one cylinder body.
3) Do I order the Schlage 30-001 keyed alike or keyed different for a building with several doors?
Keying is a required choice on the 30-001. Keyed Different is the standard and gives every cylinder its own key, which is what you want for tenant doors. Keyed Alike puts one key in multiple cylinders, which is the right call for a set of doors one person carries a single key for (a mechanical room, a run of closets, a suite entry pair). There's also a None option if you're buying the lock less cylinder and supplying your own. Two cut keys come with the cylinder.
4) Is the Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder ANSI certified for a commercial opening?
BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, and it's a commercial-duty cylinder, not a residential one. That's the auxiliary cylinder standard, so a spec calling for A156.5 cylinders on a facility standardization package is satisfied by the 30-001.
5) Will a Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder fit an aluminum storefront door with an Adams Rite deadlatch?
Not the right part for that opening in most cases. Storefront deadlatches use a specific cam and length, and the 30-001 is supplied with the Schlage L cam for Schlage L Series mortise locks. For an Adams Rite storefront lock, the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder is the matched part, a Grade 1 cylinder rated to a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness. Where the storefront uses an MS1847 deadlock and you need a pull with the cylinder in it, the Adams Rite 4024 and 4025 cylinder pulls are built for that lock, and the 4026 is the wood door version for the 5017 deadlock.
6) Is the Detex MC65 mortise cylinder a substitute for a Schlage 30-001?
The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial mortise cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, so it matches the Schlage 30-001 on length, pin count, and one of the keyways the 30-001 offers. The distinction is cam: the 30-001 carries the Schlage L cam for Schlage L mortise locks, while the MC65 is supplied for Detex hardware. If the opening is a Detex exit device, the MC65 is the direct part. If it is a Schlage L mortise lock, the 30-001 has the cam already fitted and no cam change is needed.
7) What mortise cylinder should I use on an aluminum storefront deadlock instead of a Schlage 30-001?
For an Adams Rite MS deadlock in a narrow stile aluminum door, the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder is the part built for it: Grade 1, five-pin, in the 4036 series, with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness. The Schlage 30-001 is a 6-pin mortise cylinder cammed for Schlage L mortise locks, which is a different lock body entirely. Glass front installers working MS1847 hardware should also look at the Adams Rite 4024 cylinder pull, designed for the MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch.
8) If my facility is standardized on interchangeable cores, what do I use instead of a Schlage 30-001?
An interchangeable core system separates the keying from the housing so a core can be pulled and replaced without removing the cylinder. The BEST 1CB is a 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, the BEST 1CDF is a drill resistant patented interchangeable core in 7-pin brass, and the BEST 1C is a standard 5-pin cylinder core. The Schlage 30-001 is a fixed 6-pin mortise cylinder that is pinned in the housing itself, certified to ANSI A156.5 2001 and supplied with two keys. For an institutional buyer rekeying whole wings on a schedule, the core route is the standardizing choice; for a single Schlage L mortise lock being put back in service, the 30-001 is the one-piece answer.
9) Can I convert a Schlage modular cylinder from mortise to rim or key-in-lever?
Yes, that's the point of the modular design. One cylinder body converts between mortise, rim and key-in-lever/key-in-knob types by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing. The 30-001 arrives configured as a mortise cylinder with the Schlage L cam fitted. A locksmith carrying the body plus a handful of cams and tailpieces can build most Schlage cylinder types on the truck instead of stocking each one separately.
10) What comes in the box with the Schlage 30-001 cylinder, and do I need anything else to install it?
The compression ring and spring ship with the cylinder, along with two cut keys. The compression ring takes up the gap when the cylinder doesn't thread flush to the trim, which is the usual fix for a cylinder that sits slightly proud or slightly recessed in the lock face. The cam is already the Schlage L type for L Series mortise locks. Nothing else is needed for a straight cylinder swap in an L Series lock; you'll want a cylinder wrench to thread it in.
11) Does the Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder have to be handed for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The 30-001 is non-handed, so the same part goes into a left or right hand opening. What you do have to get right is the keyway, the finish and the cam, since the cylinder threads in and the cam engages the lock body the same way regardless of door swing.
12) What finish should I order so the cylinder matches the lock trim already on my doors?
Match the BHMA finish number on the existing lever or escutcheon, not the color name. The 30-001 comes in 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. 626 satin chrome is the most common commercial standard, so a building with no records is usually 626.
13) I need a mortise cylinder with a Schlage L cam but I want an interchangeable core instead. What should I look at?
The 30-001 is a conventional pinned cylinder, so rekeying means pulling it and pinning it. If you want to rekey by pulling a core with a control key, the Corbin Russwin 1080 Series 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder is a 6-pin large format interchangeable core built with the A01 Schlage L cam for Schlage L9000 mortise locks. BEST's 1C Series standard cores and the 1CB Peaks interchangeable core cylinder are the other route if your facility is already on a BEST core system.
14) Is there another 1-1/8 inch 6-pin mortise cylinder in the Schlage C keyway if I don't want a Schlage-branded one?
The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway, so it keys into an existing Schlage C system the same way. Difference to watch: the 30-001 is supplied with the Schlage L cam for L Series mortise locks, so if the lock body is a Schlage L you need to confirm the cam on any substitute matches before it will throw the lock.
15) Can I use this mortise cylinder in a rim exit device?
Not as supplied. The 30-001 is configured as a mortise cylinder with a cam, and a rim exit device needs a rim cylinder with a tailpiece. The Schlage modular body itself converts to rim by changing the tailpiece and rear housing, but if you want a purpose-built rim housing, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece.
16) Can a rim cylinder be used in place of a Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder?
No. A rim cylinder mounts through the door face and drives a tailpiece into a surface mounted device; the Schlage 30-001 threads into a mortise lock body and turns a Schlage L cam. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, and the BEST 12E is a dummy rim cylinder at 1-5/32 inch diameter. Neither will drive a Schlage L mortise lock. Order the mortise cylinder for a mortise body and the rim cylinder for a rim exit device.
17) My doors have key-in-lever locks, not mortise locks. What cylinder do I order instead of a Schlage 30-001?
A key-in-lever or key-in-knob lock takes a different cylinder body than a mortise lock. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder, 6-pin in the G keyway, keyed different with two cut keys, and the Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder. The Schlage 30-001 is a mortise cylinder for Schlage L mortise locks. A property manager replacing lever cylinders across a building should confirm which body is in the door before ordering, since the two are not interchangeable even when the keyway matches.
18) I need a deadbolt cylinder, not a mortise cylinder. What are my options?
Deadbolt cylinders are a separate family from mortise cylinders. The Kaba Ilco 1549 is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder and the Kaba Ilco 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder, both listed for deadbolt function. On the retrofit side, the Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts and the Medeco 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. The Schlage 30-001 is a mortise cylinder for Schlage L mortise locks and will not fit a deadbolt.
19) If I standardize on the Schlage 30-001 across a portfolio, how much cylinder inventory do I actually have to carry?
One body covers a lot of ground. The modular cylinder converts to three cylinder types by swapping the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, the front housing is available in every finish to match the lock trim, and six rear housing lengths cover thicker doors. It also spans Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so a portfolio running mixed key systems doesn't need a separate cylinder line for each. For an MRO stockroom that means stocking bodies plus a small set of cams, tailpieces and housings rather than a discrete part number per lock type.
20) What is the difference between the basic and enhanced security versions of the Schlage 30-001?
The 30-001 is offered in both basic security and enhanced security builds, and the split follows the key system you pick. Classic C and the open keyway sections are the basic security route. The Everest 29 and Primus XP sections are the enhanced route, giving patented key control so keys can't be duplicated off the street. Pick by whether you need key control on the opening, not by the lock, since the cylinder is the same body either way.
21) Which cylinder do I use for a Sargent lock rather than a Schlage 30-001?
The Kaba Ilco 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder made for Sargent. The Schlage 30-001 carries the Schlage L cam and is compatible with Schlage L mortise locks, so it is not the part for a Sargent body. A locksmith carrying both should sort them by the lock the cam serves, not by pin count, since the pinning can match while the cam does not.
22) Is the Emtek CY4 cylinder an alternative to a Schlage 30-001?
No. The Emtek CY4 is a cylinder sold for Emtek hardware, and the Medeco 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder, with the Medeco 1065244 a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder carrying an Emtek tailpiece. Those serve residential style handlesets and deadbolts. The Schlage 30-001 is a commercial 6-pin mortise cylinder for Schlage L mortise locks. The two lines do not cross over.
23) What do I order for a wood door deadlock cylinder pull instead of a mortise cylinder?
The Adams Rite 4026 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull designed for the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch, and the Adams Rite 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws for the MS1847 deadlock. A cylinder pull combines the cylinder and the pull in one assembly, which is a different part than the Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder that threads into a Schlage L mortise lock body.
