Schlage 30-001 C 158 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage 30-001 come with the right cam for a Schlage L9000 mortise lock?
It comes with the Schlage L cam, which is the cam a Schlage L9000 mortise lock takes. Cam choice is what decides whether a mortise cylinder actually runs the lock: get the thread and length right but the cam wrong and the key turns while nothing moves. If the case is not a Schlage mortise lock, confirm what cam that manufacturer wants before ordering. Corbin Russwin's 1080 Series solves the same problem from the other direction, a 1-1/2 inch six-pin LFIC mortise cylinder built with the A01 Schlage L cam for L9000 locks.
2) Which Schlage keyway do I order so the new mortise cylinder works with the keys we already carry?
Order the keyway stamped on the cylinders you already have, because a plug in the wrong keyway will not accept your key at all. The 30-001 is built in the Classic single-section keyways C, E, F and G, the multiplex sections CE, EF and FG, and the multi-section C and S families including C123, C134, C145, C234, C245, C345, S123, S124, S125, S134, S145, S234, S235 and S345. Two cut keys ship with each cylinder. The modular platform behind it supports Classic, Everest 29 and Primus XP key systems, so an existing masterkey system can usually be carried over rather than restarted.
3) Do I need to specify left or right hand when ordering a Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder?
Handing does not come into it. The 30-001 is non-handed, so one part covers left and right hand doors and you can stock it without splitting inventory. What you do have to specify is the keyway, the cam and the length.
4) Does the Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder meet ANSI/BHMA requirements for a commercial spec?
BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5, 2001 edition, which is the BHMA standard cylinders are certified under. It is a commercial cylinder rather than a residential one, so it goes on a hardware schedule without an exception. That is the line a facility procurement group or spec writer looks for when standardizing keying across a building.
5) What finishes does the Schlage 30-001 cylinder come in to match the trim on the rest of my doors?
Twelve finishes, so the collar you see at the face of the door can match what is already on the openings: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. On commercial work 626 and 630 are the two you will find on most existing hardware. Finish is carried on the front housing, so a building standardized on one finish can still run different keyways behind it.
6) Can one Schlage modular cylinder cover mortise, rim and key-in-lever locks, or do I still stock all three?
The keyed plug and front housing carry across all three; what changes is the back end. Swapping the cam, tailpiece or rear housing converts the same cylinder between mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob duty, and six rear housing lengths cover thicker doors. The 30-001 is the assembly configured for mortise use, with the Schlage L cam and a compression ring and spring. For a locksmith running service calls that means stocking plugs and housings rather than finished cylinders in every type.
7) I need an interchangeable core instead of a fixed cylinder. What should I be looking at?
The 30-001 is a conventional keyed cylinder, so the plug is pinned in the housing and rekeying means pulling the cylinder. If you want to swap keying without taking the lock apart, the BEST 1C Series standard five-pin core or the Peaks 1CB 150 Series interchangeable core cover that, and the 1CDF is a drill resistant patented seven-pin brass core in the same 150 Series family. For a large format core sitting in a Schlage mortise lock, Corbin Russwin's 1080 Series is a 1-1/2 inch six-pin LFIC mortise cylinder with the A01 Schlage L cam for L9000 locks.
8) My openings are narrow stile aluminum storefront with Adams Rite deadlocks. Should I be buying a Schlage mortise cylinder for those, or something else?
For Adams Rite deadlock hardware, look at the Adams Rite parts built for it rather than a standard mortise cylinder. The Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 mortise cylinder with five-pin security and a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is the range narrow stile aluminum lives in. If the opening uses the MS1847 deadlock or deadlatch and you want the cylinder and pull as one piece, the Adams Rite 4024 cylinder pull mounts with a trim plate and the 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws, both designed for the MS1847. On wood doors, the 4026 five pin tumbler cylinder pull is designed for the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock or deadlatch. The Schlage 30-001 is the mortise cylinder for a mortise lock case and is a commercial part sold with two keys, so it belongs on the hollow metal and wood mortise lock openings in the same building rather than in the storefront stile.
9) Can I use a mortise cylinder on a rim exit device?
Not as supplied. A mortise cylinder threads into the lock case and turns a cam; a rim cylinder mounts through the door face and drives a flat tailpiece into the back of the device. The 30-001 is built as a mortise cylinder with the Schlage L cam. For rim work, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a six-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece. The underlying Schlage modular cylinder can be reconfigured to rim by changing the tailpiece and rear housing, but that is a parts change, not something you do with the cylinder as it ships.
10) The Kaba Ilco 1539 and 1599 and the Falcon A23161 look like the same kind of part. Would any of them replace a Schlage 30-001?
They are cylinders, but they go into different hardware. The Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, the 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder, the 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent, and the 1549 is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder from the RU/T series, 6-pin on the G keyway, keyed different with two cut keys. All of those seat in the lever, knob or deadbolt itself. The Schlage 30-001 is a mortise cylinder for a mortise lock. Where it does line up is keying: the Falcon cylinder is cut on the G keyway and the 30-001 is offered on a G keyway as well, so a building standardized on G can carry both the lever cylinders and the mortise openings on one key system, and the 30-001 comes with two keys the same way the Falcon does.
11) Is the Schlage 30-001 a replacement part for an existing lock or something you build a new opening around?
It is a replacement cylinder. You are swapping the keyed part of a mortise lock that is already hung, not buying a lock. That is the usual reason it gets ordered: a lost master key, a tenant turnover, or bringing a stray opening onto the building's key system. Match three things to the lock coming out and it drops in, keyway, cam and cylinder length. Two cut keys come with it.
12) I need a cross-brand mortise cylinder that will work in a Schlage L9000 mortise lock the way the Schlage 30-001 does. What is the closest match?
The Corbin Russwin 1080 in the 1-1/2 inch length, CR1080-112-A01, is the closest cross-brand mortise cylinder for that lock. It is a 6-pin mortise cylinder built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks and it carries the A01 Schlage L cam, so it drives the lock case through the same cam profile. The difference is core format: the 1080 is an LFIC (large format interchangeable core) mortise cylinder, so the core is a separate piece pulled with a control key, while the Schlage 30-001 is a modular mortise cylinder that converts to other cylinder types by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing. If your site is keyed on Schlage keyways and rekeys by re-pinning, the 30-001 stays inside that scheme; if you are converting the building to interchangeable core so a maintenance tech can swap keying without disassembling the lock, the 1080 is the format that does it.
13) I only need one mortise cylinder for a single storefront door already keyed to Schlage C. Is there a simpler fixed cylinder instead of a modular one?
Yes. The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder supplied on the Schlage C keyway, so it keys into an existing Schlage C system without any assembly decisions. It is a single fixed configuration. The Schlage 30-001 is the modular approach, where one cylinder converts to three different cylinder types by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing and thicker doors are handled by six available lengths of rear housing, which is what a locksmith wants on the truck rather than what a property manager needs for one opening. The one thing to confirm before ordering the MC65 is length: it is 1-1/8 inch, so measure what the mortise lock case and door thickness actually call for.
14) A rim cylinder search brought up the Corbin Russwin 3070 and the BEST 12E next to the Schlage 30-001. Can either one take the place of a mortise cylinder?
No, and they are not interchangeable with each other either. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, so it mounts through the door and drives a rim exit device or rim lock by that tailpiece length. The BEST 12E is a dummy rim cylinder with a 1-5/32 inch diameter, meaning it has no key function at all and exists to fill and dress the prep on the pull side. The Schlage 30-001 is a mortise cylinder that threads into a mortise lock case and turns a cam. Where the three do connect is on a modular program: the 30-001 converts to mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, so a shop stocking it can cover the rim opening as well as the mortise one from the same cylinder body.
15) When I cross a mortise cylinder between brands, which cam do the equivalents actually ship with?
The cam is the part that decides whether the swap works, and the cross-brand mortise cylinders differ on it. The Corbin Russwin 1000 in 1-1/2 inch length, CR1000-112, comes with the A02 straight cam. The Corbin Russwin 1070 in 1-1/4 inch, CR1070-114-A01, is a 6-pin mortise housing with the A01 cloverleaf cam. The Corbin Russwin 1080 in 1-1/2 inch, CR1080-112-A01, is the one carrying the A01 Schlage L cam for Schlage L9000 mortise locks. The Schlage 30-001 handles the same problem from the other direction: rather than picking a fixed cam at order time, it converts to three different cylinder types by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, so one cylinder body follows the lock case you find in the door. Confirm the cam the lock manufacturer calls for before you order any of them, because a correct length and keyway with the wrong cam still will not throw the bolt.
16) Half my units have Emtek handlesets and Kwikset deadbolts and the other half have commercial mortise locks. Can one cylinder cover both?
No, those are two families. The residential handleset and deadbolt side is served by rim type lazy motion cylinders that drive a tailpiece: the Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, the 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder, and the 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. Emtek also lists its own CY4 cylinder. The commercial mortise lock side is where the Schlage 30-001 goes: it is a commercial mortise cylinder, non-handed, so it does not need to be ordered left or right for the opening. Plan on one part number for the unit entry hardware and one for the mortise openings, and key them into a common system rather than trying to make one cylinder body serve both.
17) Our spec sheet asks for Grade 1 cylinders on the mortise openings. How do the cross-brand mortise cylinders certify?
The Schlage 30-001 is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001. On the cross-brand side, the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder is Grade 1 in the 4036 series, and the Corbin Russwin mortise cylinders are stated at Grade 1 series as well: the 1000 series in the 1-1/2 inch A02 straight cam version, the 1070 series in the 1-1/4 inch 6-pin housing with A01 cloverleaf cam, and the 1080 series in the 1-1/2 inch LFIC 6-pin version. For a submittal, the practical distinction is not the grade line but the format and cam each one commits you to, so match the certification the spec names, then confirm the cam and length against the mortise lock case on the drawing before the order goes in.
