Schlage 30-001 S123 134 622 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder come with the compression ring and spring, or are those ordered separately?
Both are in the box. The 30-001 is supplied as a mortise cylinder with the compression ring and spring, and two cut keys come with it. The ring and spring take up the gap between the cylinder face and the lock trim so the cylinder pulls up tight against the escutcheon and does not back off. Nothing else in that stack has to be sourced to mount it in the lock body.
2) Is the Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder handed? I am ordering for both left and right hand doors.
Non-handed. One part number covers both hands, so you are only choosing finish and keyway. Handing on a mortise lockset is set by the lock body and the trim, not by the cylinder, so a cylinder swap never has to follow the swing of the door.
3) Can I get a Schlage 30-001 cylinder in the same keyway as the Schlage keys my building already runs?
In nearly every case, yes. Keyway choices cover the Classic sectionals (C, E, F, G, CE, EF, FG) and the Everest 29 sectionals in both the C and S families, including C123, C235, C245, S125, S235 and S345. The same cylinder body supports Classic, Everest 29 and Primus XP key systems, which is why it spans basic and enhanced security work on the same building. Read the keyway stamped on the key you already carry, order that, and it goes into the existing system. Two cut keys ship with the cylinder.
4) Do I need to stock separate mortise, rim and key-in-lever cylinders, or will one Schlage modular cylinder cover all three?
One keyed body covers all three. The modular design converts between mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, so the pinned body on the truck is the same part in each application. The 30-001 arrives built as a mortise cylinder; taking it to rim or key-in-lever is a housing and tailpiece change, not a different cylinder. For a locksmith carrying stock, that is one keyway to pin instead of three.
5) My doors are thicker than a standard 1-3/4 inch leaf. Will a Schlage modular mortise cylinder still reach the lock?
Thicker doors are handled at the rear housing. Six rear housing lengths are offered, and the rear housing is what sets how deep the cylinder runs, so a heavier leaf or thicker trim means stepping up the housing rather than moving to a different cylinder. The front housing is unchanged, so the finish you specified still matches the rest of the trim.
6) Our facility spec calls for a BHMA certified cylinder. Does the Schlage 30-001 meet it?
BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, which is the standard covering cylinders and input devices for locks. It is a commercial part, not a residential one, so on a spec that calls out BHMA certified cylinders for the mortise locks that line is covered. Useful if you are standardizing one cylinder across a facility and have to show the certification on the submittal.
7) What finishes does the Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder come in so it matches my existing lever trim?
Twelve finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. On commercial openings 626 and 630 are the two you will be matching most of the time. Only the front housing is visible once the cylinder is in the lock, so match the escutcheon or rose on the key side and ignore the inside trim.
8) Our facility standardizes on interchangeable cores. Is there a mortise cylinder that fits that program?
Yes. The Corbin Russwin 1080 is a Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch large format interchangeable core mortise cylinder, 6-pin, built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks and supplied with the A01 Schlage L cam, so the core can be pulled and rekeyed with a control key rather than servicing the whole cylinder. The BEST 1CB is a 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, and the BEST 1CDF is a drill resistant patented 7-pin interchangeable core in brass in the same 150 series, if the building runs on a BEST core program. The Schlage 30-001 is a conventional keyed 6-pin mortise cylinder supplied with 2 keys, BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, which is the right choice where the openings are pinned to a Schlage keyway rather than a core system.
9) Glass entrance door with a deadlock and no lever. What carries the cylinder on the pull side?
That opening calls for a cylinder pull, which combines the door pull and the cylinder mount in one plate. The Adams Rite 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting and the 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws, both designed for the Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch; the 4026 is the five pin tumbler cylinder pull for the 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch. Where a cylinder hole needs filling with no key function, the BEST 12E is a dummy rim cylinder at 1-5/32 inch diameter. The Schlage 30-001 is a keyed mortise cylinder for a mortise lock case, so it is not the part that mounts to a glass door pull.
10) My mortise lock takes a straight cam, not the Schlage cam. What mortise cylinder should I order instead?
Cam shape decides this one, and cams do not carry across lock brands. The Corbin Russwin 1000 Series mortise cylinder comes at 1-1/2 inches with the A02 straight cam, and the 1070 Series is a 1-1/4 inch six-pin mortise housing with the A01 cloverleaf cam. Where the lock needs a short cylinder but the building is keyed Schlage, the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch six-pin mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway. Pull the existing cylinder and match the cam and length off it before ordering.
11) I need a rim cylinder for an exit device, not a mortise cylinder. Can the Schlage modular cylinder do that?
It can, with a parts change. The modular body converts to a rim cylinder by swapping the tailpiece, cam and rear housing, so the keyed body you already stocked serves the exit device without repinning a second cylinder. If you would rather buy the rim part outright, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a six-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece.
12) What is the closest non-Schlage mortise cylinder to the Schlage 30-001?
The Corbin Russwin 1000 is the nearest straight equivalent: a Grade 1 series mortise cylinder in 1-1/2 inch length supplied with an A02 straight cam. Like the Schlage 30-001, it is a threaded mortise cylinder that seats in the cylinder pocket of a mortise lock case rather than driving a tailpiece through the door. The practical difference at the bench is the cam and the key system: the Corbin Russwin 1000 arrives with the A02 straight cam fitted, while the Schlage modular cylinder is built so the cam, tailpiece and rear housing are changed to suit the lock, and it supports interchangeability across Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems. Confirm the cam pattern your mortise lock case requires before you commit either way.
13) My mortise lock case needs a cloverleaf cam, not a straight cam. What are my options?
For a cloverleaf pattern, the Corbin Russwin 1070 is a 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing supplied with the A01 cloverleaf cam. If the case takes a straight cam instead, the Corbin Russwin 1000 in 1-1/2 inch length carries the A02 straight cam. The Schlage 30-001 approaches the same problem from the other direction: it is a 6-pin mortise cylinder whose cam, tailpiece and rear housing are changed to convert one cylinder into mortise, rim or key-in-lever service, with six rear housing lengths for thicker doors. Match the cam to the lock case, then pick the length that suits the door.
14) I only need one fixed-length mortise cylinder in a Schlage C keyway. Is there a simpler option than a modular one?
The Detex MC65 is a commercial grade 6-pin mortise cylinder in 1-1/8 inch length cut to the Schlage C keyway, supplied as one assembled length with no housing to select. That suits a single opening where you already know the door and lock case take a 1-1/8 inch cylinder. The Schlage 30-001 is also offered in the C keyway, and its value is the opposite case: six rear housing lengths accommodate thicker doors, and the same cylinder converts to three types by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, which is what a service van carries rather than what a single door needs.
15) Aluminum storefront with a thin stile. Will a standard commercial mortise cylinder suit it?
Check the door thickness the cylinder is rated for before you order. The Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 mortise cylinder with five-pin security that lists a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is the range thin aluminum stile work falls into. The Schlage 30-001 is a commercial 6-pin mortise cylinder whose modular design accommodates thicker doors through six rear housing lengths, so it is aimed at the heavier door and mortise lock case rather than the narrow stile deadlock. Measure the stile and confirm the deadlock the cylinder is threading into.
16) My exit device takes a rim cylinder. Can I use a mortise cylinder instead?
No, they are not interchangeable parts even though both are keyed cylinders. A rim cylinder mounts behind the door face and drives a tailpiece through to the device: the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, which is the pattern an exit device expects. The Schlage 30-001 is a mortise cylinder, threaded to seat in a mortise lock case and turn a cam. If your hardware schedule shows a rim device, order the rim housing and set the tailpiece length to the door; the Schlage modular cylinder covers rim service only when it is built up with the rim rear housing and tailpiece rather than the mortise cam.
17) Someone quoted a BEST 1C core as a swap for the Schlage mortise cylinder. Is that the same thing?
No, a core and a complete cylinder are different items. The BEST 1C is a standard 5-pin cylinder core from the standard and premium core range, and it is keyed to a BEST core system and drops into a matching housing rather than threading into a mortise lock case on its own. The Schlage 30-001 is a complete 6-pin mortise cylinder, BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001 and supplied with 2 keys, that assembles from front housing, cam and rear housing. If the building genuinely runs BEST cores, the mortise-ready path is an interchangeable core mortise cylinder such as the Corbin Russwin 1080, a 1-1/2 inch 6-pin LFIC mortise cylinder for Schlage L9000 mortise locks.
18) The lever locks in our building use the G keyway. Do I order the same cylinder for those as for the mortise locks?
No, the bodies are different even when the keyway matches. A lever lock takes a key-in-lever cylinder: the Falcon A23161-05 G is a 6-pin key-in-lever cylinder in the G keyway for the RU/T series, keyed different and supplied with 2 cut keys. The Schlage 30-001 mortise cylinder is offered in the G keyway as well, so a single keyway can run across both door types, but the mortise lock case takes the threaded mortise cylinder and the lever lock takes the key-in-lever cylinder. Count the openings by lock type first, then order against each.
19) We are replacing worn cylinders across a mixed building. What covers the knob locks and deadbolts if the mortise cylinder only fits the mortise doors?
Split the count by lock body. The Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, the 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder, the 1549 is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder, and the 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent hardware. Those four cover cylindrical knob, lever and deadbolt bodies. The mortise doors take a mortise cylinder such as the Schlage 30-001, which is non-handed so the same part serves left and right hand openings across the fleet. Walk the doors once, tally by body type, and order each group to its own cylinder.
20) The apartment entry doors have handlesets and deadbolts, not mortise locks. What cylinder goes in those?
Those take rim type retrofit cylinders rather than a mortise cylinder. The Medeco 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, the 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, and the 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for Arrow JL interconnected locks and Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinders. Emtek hardware also takes the Emtek CY4 cylinder. The Schlage 30-001 is a commercial mortise cylinder and belongs on the mortise lock cases in the corridors and common doors, not on a residential deadbolt.
