Schlage 30-120 CE 626 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage 30-120 core work in a standard L9000 mortise lock, or only hotel function locks?
The 30-120 is built specifically for Schlage L mortise hotel function locks. That is the compatibility Schlage states for it, and hotel function cylinders are handed for a reason: the core has to drive the shut-out/guest logic in the correct rotation. For a standard non-hotel L series mortise lock you want a plain FSIC mortise housing and core rather than this one.
2) Do I have to order the Schlage 30-120 hotel core left hand or right hand?
Handing matters. The 30-120 is a handed core and it ships either LH or RH, so you have to know which way the door swings before ordering. Stand outside the guest room door: hinges on your left is left hand, hinges on your right is right hand. Order the wrong hand and the core seats but the hotel function will not operate correctly. Both hands are offered in every keyway and both finishes.
3) Can I get this Schlage hotel core in my property's existing keyway so it works on our master key system?
Nine Schlage keyways are offered on the 30-120: C, C123, CE, E, EF, F, FG, G, S123 and S145. That spans Classic (C, CE, E, EF, F, FG, G) and Everest 29 restricted sections (C123, S123, S145), so a core can be pulled into an existing conventional Schlage system through the shared keyway families. Match the keyway stamped on your current keys and the new core drops onto the same master system.
4) What does 1 Bitted mean on these Schlage 30-120 cores, and will they arrive keyed to my system?
Every 30-120 core is supplied 1 bitted, meaning the plug is cut to a single uniform depth so a locksmith can pin and cut it to whatever key system the property runs. Keying is a required choice at order: keyed different, keyed alike across multiple locks, or none if you are handling the pinning in house. There is a key code field on the order for properties that key to an existing code. Cores ship with 2 keys.
5) Is the Schlage 30-120 a full size interchangeable core or a small format one?
Full size interchangeable core, six pin. That distinction decides whether it fits: an FSIC core will not seat in a housing prepped for a small format (SFIC figure-eight) core, and the two are not swappable. The plug runs the industry standard 1/2 inch diameter, and pulling the core with a control key makes rekeying a room a minute job instead of a lock teardown.
6) Is a BEST interchangeable core a drop-in for a Schlage 30-120 core?
No. Both are interchangeable cores, but they belong to two different core systems. The Schlage 30-120 is a 6-pin full size interchangeable core cut in Schlage keyways, offered in C, C123, CE, E, EF, F, FG, G, S123 and S145. The BEST 1CB is a Peaks 1CB 150 Series interchangeable core and the BEST 1C is a standard 5-pin cylinder core from the standard and premium core line, both keyed into BEST's own core system rather than a Schlage keyway family. A facility running BEST cores in its housings orders the 1CB or 1C; a facility running Schlage FSIC housings on L mortise hotel locks orders the 30-120. Mixing the two means two key systems in one building.
7) What is the closest cross-brand mortise cylinder to the Schlage 30-120 for a Schlage L mortise lock?
The Corbin Russwin 1080 is the nearest peer for a Schlage L body. It is a 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam. The Schlage 30-120 is a 6-pin full size interchangeable core for Schlage L mortise hotel function locks. The practical difference is the interchangeable core format: the 30-120 is a full size interchangeable core, while the CR1080-112-A01 is a large format interchangeable core cylinder supplied as a 1-1/2 inch housing with the cam already specified. A locksmith standardizing a hotel on Schlage FSIC keying stays with the 30-120; a house already running Corbin Russwin LFIC on Schlage L bodies has a direct path with the CR1080.
8) What should I use instead of the Schlage 30-120 if the mortise lock is not set up for an interchangeable core?
Use a conventional mortise cylinder. The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway, and the Corbin Russwin 1000 is a Grade 1 mortise cylinder in 1-1/2 inch length with an A02 straight cam. Either goes into a standard threaded mortise cylinder pocket. The Schlage 30-120 is a full size interchangeable core and needs a housing built to accept an FSIC core; it does not thread into a conventional mortise pocket on its own. If the door already keys to Schlage C, the MC65 keeps that key working without changing the lock body.
9) I just need a Schlage C keyway mortise cylinder for a storeroom door. Is the 30-120 what I want?
Not for a plain storeroom opening. The 30-120 is a handed interchangeable core for hotel function mortise locks. For a straightforward Schlage C keyway mortise cylinder, the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial mortise cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. Reach for the 30-120 only when the lock is an L series hotel function unit and the property wants core swap rekeying.
10) Is the Schlage 30-120 a replacement part I can order for locks already installed in my building?
That is exactly what it is for. The 30-120 is a brass replacement core for commercial Schlage L mortise hotel function locks already hanging on the door. You are not buying a lock, you are buying the keyed core that drops into one. On a guest room turnover or a lost key event you pull the old core and seat a new one without touching the mortise body or the trim.
11) If I standardize a whole floor of guest rooms on the Schlage 30-120, what do I have to specify per door?
Three things per opening: hand (LH or RH, taken from the door swing), keyway to match the property's existing Schlage system, and finish (606 or 626). Then the keying choice, keyed different for individual rooms or keyed alike where several locks share a key, with a key code entered if you are matching an existing system. Cores arrive 1 bitted with 2 keys, so a locksmith finishes the pinning to your master plan.
12) I ordered a Corbin Russwin 1070 instead of a Schlage 30-120 and it does not fit. What is the difference?
They serve different lock bodies and different cam patterns. The Corbin Russwin 1070 is a 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam in the CR1070 series; the Corbin Russwin 1080 is the one built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with the A01 Schlage L cam. The Schlage 30-120 is a 6-pin full size interchangeable core for Schlage L mortise hotel function locks and is handed left or right. If the door is a Schlage L hotel function lock, the 30-120 or the CR1080 are the two that address it; the CR1070 housing is specified for its own series application.
13) Which mortise cylinder should I specify for a Grade 1 requirement on a mortise opening?
The Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 five-pin mortise cylinder in the 4036 Series, rated for doors from 1/2 inch minimum thickness, and the Corbin Russwin 1000 is a Grade 1 mortise cylinder in 1-1/2 inch length with an A02 straight cam. Both are conventional mortise cylinders that thread into the lock body. The Schlage 30-120 is a 6-pin full size interchangeable core for Schlage L mortise hotel function locks, which is the choice when the specification calls for interchangeable core keying and field rekeying rather than a fixed cylinder. Institutional buyers writing a spec typically decide the core format first, then the cylinder.
14) Will a rim cylinder work in place of the Schlage 30-120?
No. A rim cylinder mounts through the door and drives an exit device or rim lock with a tailpiece; the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, and the BEST 12E Series is a dummy rim cylinder at 1-5/32 inch diameter for openings that need the appearance without a working cylinder. The Schlage 30-120 is a mortise application part, a 6-pin full size interchangeable core for Schlage L mortise hotel function locks. If the building has both exit devices and L mortise locks, the rim cylinders and the mortise cores are ordered separately even when they key alike.
15) Can I use a key-in-knob or key-in-lever cylinder on a Schlage L mortise hotel lock?
No. The Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, the 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder, and the Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder in a 6-pin G keyway supplied keyed different with two cut keys. All of those replace the cylinder inside a knob or lever trim. The Schlage 30-120 is a full size interchangeable core for a Schlage L mortise lock body and comes with two keys. Cylindrical trim parts and mortise cores are not interchangeable even when the keyway matches, so a property manager replacing cylinders across mixed doors orders by lock body, not by keyway.
16) What finishes does the Schlage 30-120 hotel core come in, and will they match my existing lever trim?
Two: 606 satin brass and 626 satin chrome. Both are available in every keyway and both hands, so finish never limits your keying choice. 626 is the usual pairing with satin chrome commercial lever trim, 606 with brass. The visible part is only the core face, so a near match rather than an exact one is generally acceptable on a guest room door.
17) Is there a higher security alternative core if I need drill resistance instead of the Schlage 30-120?
The BEST 1CDF is a drill resistant patented interchangeable core, 7-pin, brass, in the 150 Series. It runs on the BEST core system, so it suits a facility whose housings and key system are already BEST. The Schlage 30-120 is a 6-pin full size interchangeable core in brass, and its keyway families let it integrate into an existing conventional Schlage cylinder system, which is what keeps a hotel on one key system while adding cores. Choosing between them is a question of which key system the property already runs, since the two do not share cores.
18) What is the difference between the Schlage 30-120 and an Adams Rite cylinder pull?
They do different jobs. The Adams Rite 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting and the 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws, both designed for the Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch, while the 4026 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull for wood door applications with the 5017 wood door deadlock. Those are pull and cylinder assemblies for narrow stile and wood door deadlocks. The Schlage 30-120 is a 6-pin full size interchangeable core for Schlage L mortise hotel function locks. A glass front or storefront opening running an MS1847 takes the Adams Rite parts; an L mortise hotel lock takes the core.
19) Do Medeco retrofit cylinders replace a Schlage 30-120 core?
No, they address different hardware. The Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder, and the 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. Those are deadbolt and handleset retrofits. The Schlage 30-120 is a 6-pin full size interchangeable core for a Schlage L mortise hotel function lock and is a handed part. Ordering by the lock body on the door keeps these straight.
