1) My lock is not a Schlage. Will the 40-100 cylinder fit it?
It will not. The 40-100 is built for Schlage key-in-lever and key-in-knob locks and the tailpieces packed with it are for those locks. 2) Can one Schlage modular cylinder be converted to a mortise or rim cylinder?
That is the point of the modular design. The same cylinder becomes a mortise, rim, or key-in-lever cylinder by changing the tailpiece, the cam, or the rear housing. For a locksmith stocking a van or a maintenance shop keeping a parts drawer, that means one cylinder body and a set of components instead of three separate cylinder types on the shelf. The 40-100 is supplied with multiple tailpieces, so the key-in-lever side is already covered out of the box.
3) Can I order Schlage 40-100 cylinders keyed alike across a building or keyed to my existing system?
