Schlage 620/631 Series heavy-duty pushbuttons are commonly used to control ingress and/or egress of a door. 620 and 631 Series come standard with a momentary switch but feature many factory orderable options including delayed or maintained action and narrow stile faceplates. Schlage Electronics 625RD DA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What voltage and current can the Schlage 625 pushbutton switch?
The 625 switch is rated 3A at 30 VDC, whether you take the standard momentary contact, the alternate action (maintained) version, or the delayed pneumatic action version. Operating voltage for the unit is 12/24 VDC, and if you spec the LED option it draws .025A at 28 VDC. That rating covers typical mag lock, electric strike and access control relay circuits, but it is a low voltage DC device, so do not wire it into a line voltage circuit.
2) What is the difference between momentary, delayed action and alternate action on the Schlage 620 Series pushbuttons?
Momentary is the standard build: the contact closes only while the button is pressed, which is what you want for a request-to-exit or a strike release. Delayed pneumatic action (DA) holds the contact for an adjustable 0 to 60 seconds after release, so a mag lock stays dropped long enough for someone to get through. Alternate action (AA) is maintained, so one press latches it on and the next press releases it, used where you want the door to stay unlocked until someone presses again. All three are factory options, not field changes, so pick before you order.
3) Can I get a DPDT contact on the Schlage 625 mushroom button, and can I combine it with delayed action?
A double pole double throw switch is available on the 625, and it is the one to order when you need to trigger two separate circuits from the same press, say releasing a lock and signalling an alarm shunt. It cannot be combined with the DA (delayed pneumatic action) option. If you need timing plus a second contact, the delayed action version uses form Z contacts, which gives you the transfer contact without the DPDT build.
4) What is the difference between the Schlage 625 and the 623 mushroom pushbutton?
Both are mushroom-style heavy duty pushbuttons in the Schlage 620 Series with a stainless steel faceplate and translucent cone. The difference is button diameter: the 625 uses a 2-3/4 inch mushroom button, while the 623 uses a 1-5/8 inch mushroom button. Pick the 625 where you want a large, easy-to-strike target for egress or ADA-style push-to-exit use, and the 623 where the wall space or aesthetic calls for a smaller head.
5) Should I use the 2-3/4 inch mushroom button or the smaller 1-1/4 inch button for an exit control?
Button size is about how it gets hit. The 625 uses a 2-3/4 inch mushroom head, which is the one to use where somebody has to find and strike it fast or with a gloved hand, a forearm or an elbow, or in a high traffic corridor. The 623 is a 1-5/8 inch mushroom and the 621 a 1-1/4 inch flat button, both on stainless steel faceplates with translucent cones, for tighter plates and lower traffic. If the location takes abuse, the 631 uses a 1-1/4 inch metal button on an extreme-duty zinc faceplate with a metal cone.
6) Does the Schlage 625 pushbutton light up, and what else is available if I need an illuminated button?
Illuminated and glow-in-the-dark cone options are offered on the 621 and 623 models, not on the 625. The 620 Series does offer LEDs in green, yellow and red rated 12-24 VDC, .025A at 28 VDC, for status indication. If an illuminated button is the requirement, the Locknetics IPB-100 / IPB-100-N is an illuminated pushbutton from the IPB Series and worth looking at as an alternative.
7) Can I change a Schlage 625 from momentary to maintained action after it is installed?
No. Momentary is the standard build, and delayed action, alternate action/maintained, DPDT and the narrow stile plate are all factory-ordered configurations on the 620 Series. Decide the switch action before the order goes in, because a field swap means a new button.
8) My opening is an aluminum storefront stile, not a single gang box - can I still use the 625?
The 625RD as configured mounts to a single gang box with its standard stainless steel faceplate. For a narrow aluminum stile, order the narrow stile option, which supplies a 1-3/4 inch by 4-1/2 inch stainless steel plate sized for that condition. The button and switching stay the same; only the plate changes.
9) I need a smaller push to exit button than the 2-3/4 inch mushroom - what else is in the same Schlage series?
The 621 is the compact option in the same heavy duty family, using a 1-1/4 inch button with a stainless steel faceplate and translucent cone, versus the 2-3/4 inch mushroom head on the 625. Both the 621 and 623 also offer glow-in-the-dark and illuminated cone options. The switching side is common across the family at 3A at 30 VDC for momentary, so you are trading button size and cone options, not electrical capability.
10) The 625 standard button is momentary - what do I order instead if I need the contact to stay latched?
Stay within the 625 and choose the alternate action, maintained option, which is rated 3A at 30 VDC and holds its state instead of releasing when you let go. If instead you need a timed hold, the delayed pneumatic action option gives 0 to 60 seconds on form Z contacts at 3A at 30 VDC. Note that the double pole double throw option is not available together with the delayed action option, so if you need DPDT switching you take it with momentary or maintained action.
11) Does the red 625RD pushbutton come in other finishes to match the rest of my door hardware?
The 625RD ships with a satin stainless steel (630) faceplate as standard. Across the 620/631 Series, the faceplate is also offered in SF-626 satin chrome, SF-613 oil rubbed bronze and SF-625 bright chrome, all on heavy-duty zinc.
