1) Will the Schlage 8843T fob work with my existing 125 kHz prox readers as well as newer smart card readers?
Yes, that's the whole point of the 8843T. It's a multi-technology fob: it carries a 125 kHz proximity chip alongside a 13.56 MHz MIFARE DESFire EV3 smart credential, so one fob presents to legacy prox readers and to newer smart readers. That's what makes it the migration credential, you issue it once and swap readers over a door at a time instead of reissuing every user on cutover day.
2) Can I buy just a few Schlage 8843T fobs, or is there a minimum order?
These ship 50 to a pack, and 50 is the minimum. There's no single-fob or 10-pack break on the 8843T, so plan the order around multiples of 50. For a building rollout that's usually fine; for a handful of replacement fobs on an existing site it means buying the full pack.
3) Will a Schlage DESFire fob read on a non-Schlage reader from another access control manufacturer?
Partly. On other manufacturers' readers and electronic locks the fob reads CSN only, meaning the reader sees the chip serial number, not the encrypted Schlage credential data. Full encrypted read requires a Schlage reader. If your head end can enroll by CSN you can use these on a mixed site; if it needs the secured sector, the fob has to be presented to Schlage hardware.
4) How secure is a MIFARE DESFire EV3 fob compared to a plain prox fob?
The DESFire EV3 side uses 128 bit AES encryption between credential and reader, with diversified keys and mutual authentication, and it conforms to ISO 14443. A plain 125 kHz prox credential has none of that, it transmits its number in the clear and is trivially cloned. On this fob the prox chip is there for backward compatibility with old readers, so any door you actually want secured should be read on the DESFire side.
5) Do I need to order these on a specific facility code, or can I just add them to my existing system?
The 8843T fob is supplied on 37X format with facility code 100. That has to match what your panel or lock is programmed to accept. If your site is already running a different facility code or card format, these won't enroll as-is, you'd order fobs on your site's code instead. Check the format and facility code your existing credentials use before adding a pack of these to a live system.
6) How close does the fob have to be held to the reader?
Read range is up to 1 to 2 inches. It's a contactless credential but not a long-range one, so users tap or hold it right at the reader face. Worth knowing if you're specifying readers behind thick glass or a metal mullion, that stack-up eats into the range.
7) Can these fobs be used for anything besides opening doors, like vending or printing?
Yes. The DESFire architecture is open and multi-application, so the same fob can hold access control plus cashless vending, cafeteria, transportation, or secure print release, with memory partitioned per application. For a campus or hospital that means one credential on the keyring instead of three. Coordinate the memory layout with whoever manages each application before issuing, since the sectors have to be allocated up front.
8) Is a keyfob more durable than a card for maintenance and field staff?
For techs and maintenance crews, yes, a fob on a keyring takes daily abuse better than a card in a back pocket. Schlage builds these credentials as composite construction rather than single-layer PVC, which is what gives them their durability. The tradeoff is you lose the flat surface of a card, so if you need photo ID and access on one credential, a card is the right form factor. Custom artwork and laser engraving are available on the fobs for site or department marking.
