The Schlage 9691T (formerly aptiQ 9691T) is a multi-technology keyfob that combines standard 125 kHz proximity with 13.56 MHz MIFARE Classic smart card technology. 1) What information do I need to give when ordering Schlage 9691T keyfobs?
Two things get programmed at the factory, so you have to supply them up front: the facility code (not required for 32-Bit or 37-Bit formats) and a unique start serial number (not required for 35-Bit format). Both the proximity side and the MIFARE side are encoded to what you specify, so if your existing badges use facility code 100 on 26-Bit, the fobs need to be ordered that way. There is no field programming step that fixes it later.
2) Will a Schlage 9691T fob work on my old 125 kHz proximity readers and new smart card readers at the same time?
That's exactly what the 9691T is for. It carries 125 kHz proximity and 13.56 MHz MIFARE Classic in one fob, so a single credential opens doors on legacy prox readers and on smart card readers. That makes it the credential you hand out during a phased reader migration, where some openings have been converted and some haven't, without issuing staff two fobs. Both technologies have to be encoded to formats your panels already read.

The MIFARE side supports 26-Bit, 32-Bit, 34-Bit, 35-Bit, 36-Bit, 37-Bit, 40-Bit and 48-Bit. The proximity side is a shorter list: 26-Bit, 32-Bit, 34-Bit, 35-Bit, 36-Bit and 37-Bit. So if your access control system runs a 40-Bit or 48-Bit card format, that can only live on the smart card side of the fob, and the prox side has to be encoded in one of the six formats above. Match both to what your panel is programmed to accept before you order.
4) What facility codes are available on the Schlage 9691T keyfob?
Preconfigured options cover 26A format with facility code 100, 102 or 235, a 37-Bit format fob with no facility code (model 9691T37H), and 37X format with facility code 100. On 26-Bit, the facility code range runs 0 to 255 and the card number range 0 to 65,435, on both the proximity and MIFARE sides. Other bit formats use different ranges. The 37-Bit option carries no facility code at all, which is normal for that format.
5) How many Schlage 9691T keyfobs come in a pack?
They ship 25 to a pack, and the whole pack is encoded to the facility code and serial range you specify. That's worth knowing when you're sizing an order for a building: a 60-tenant property needs three packs, and the third pack's serial numbers continue the sequence you set. 6) Is the Schlage 9691T the same as the aptiQ 9691T?
Same credential, renamed. The 9691T was sold as aptiQ 9691T before Schlage consolidated the branding, so a spec written years ago calling for an aptiQ 9691T is asking for this fob. Useful when you're matching an existing badge population and the paperwork still says aptiQ.
7) How secure is a MIFARE smart card fob compared to a plain proximity card?
On the 13.56 MHz MIFARE Classic side, data is encrypted and the fob and reader mutually authenticate each other before the credential is passed. The 125 kHz proximity side works the way ordinary prox always has, so a facility that keeps the prox side live keeps that exposure until the last legacy reader is swapped. That's the argument for treating the 9691T as a transition credential and finishing the reader upgrade rather than living on it permanently.
8) Is the 9691T a card or a fob, and will it go on a keyring?
It's a keyfob, not a card, built in an ISO thin form factor so it stays slim on a ring alongside keys. If your population needs a photo ID badge that clips to a lanyard and prints, a fob is the wrong choice and you want a card credential instead. Fobs suit maintenance staff, contractors and tenants who carry keys anyway and don't need a printed badge face.
9) How much memory does the 9691T MIFARE Classic keyfob have, and does that matter for me?
1K byte, which is 8K bit, of MIFARE Classic memory. For straight door access that's more than you need, one sector holds the credential data. It matters if you're planning to use the same fob for a second application on the smart card side, like cashless vending or a library or lab system, where each application claims sectors of its own. If the plan is access control only, the capacity is not a deciding factor.
