Schlage Electronics 9551 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will Schlage 9551 MIFARE cards work on readers that aren't Schlage?
On a Schlage reader the 9551 MIFARE Classic credential reads encrypted, using the sector Schlage secures for the access control application. On another manufacturer's reader or electronic lock, it reads by CSN only, meaning the reader picks up the card serial number rather than the encrypted access control data. That works for many third party systems, but it is a different level of security than the encrypted read, so confirm your panel or lock can enroll credentials by CSN before you standardize a building on these.
2) Is a MIFARE smartcard worth it over a 125 kHz proximity card for my building?
The trade off is security and future use. A 125 kHz prox card sends a number and nothing more. The 9551 is a 13.56 MHz MIFARE Classic credential built on ISO 14443A: data between card and reader is protected with 3DES encryption, keys are diversified, and card and reader mutually authenticate, so the credential is far harder to clone off the air than prox. The higher frequency also moves data faster, and the spare sectors let you add non-access applications later. Schlage positions MIFARE Classic for new installations at facilities with moderate security needs. If you are only extending an existing 125 kHz prox population and never intend to leave it, prox is simpler; if you are cutting over a building, this is the platform to cut to.
3) Can I use the Schlage 9551 smartcard for vending or transit as well as door access?
Yes, and that is the point of the open architecture. Schlage locks down only the sector holding the access control application; the rest of the 16 sectors on the 1K byte card are yours to write, so a campus can put cashless vending, point of sale, transit, or a library application on the same badge and choose whatever vendor they like for those. The memory structure is fixed, so your other application vendors write to a known layout rather than negotiating space card by card.
4) How close does the card have to be to the reader?
Up to 3 inches. The 9551 is a contactless credential, so it is a presentation at the reader face rather than a swipe or an insert, but it is not a long range card. If your design has readers behind thick mullion covers, deep glass, or metal frames, plan for the badge to come within that 3 inch window. For garage or vehicle gate applications where the driver stays in the car, this is the wrong credential class.
5) Does the Schlage 9551 meet the ISO standard our integrator specified?
The 9551 is compliant with international standard ISO 14443, and specifically built on ISO 14443A. If the spec on the drawing calls for a 13.56 MHz ISO 14443A contactless smartcard, this is that credential: 1K byte of memory, 8K bits, organized in 16 sectors. Integrators writing a credential spec should note the memory figure, because a reader or application expecting a larger MIFARE memory footprint will not have room on a 1K card.
6) How many cards do I get in a box of Schlage 9551?
The 9551 MIFARE card ships in a pack of 100, and that is the sold-as unit. For a property manager badging a single building it is usually one box plus spares for turnover; for a phased rollout, size your order in hundreds rather than by exact headcount.
7) Can Schlage 9551 cards be printed with our logo and photo IDs?
Custom artwork and laser engraving are both available on the 9551, so the card can carry facility branding or engraved numbering. It is an ISO-style card made of composite material, which is the construction that holds up to daily badge use and to direct printing rather than delaminating like a thin laminate card. For a hospital or school badging thousands of people who clip and pull the card every day, that construction matters as much as the electronics.
8) How do we keep track of the card numbers we've been issued?
Schlage runs CardTrax, an account tracking program that records the card numbers issued to your account at no additional cost. That matters on a re-order: when a facility comes back in two years for another 100 badges, the numbering can continue from where the last batch ended instead of colliding with cards already enrolled in the system, which is the usual cause of duplicate credential headaches in a multi-site rollout.
