1) Will the Schlage 9420 MIFARE Classic clamshell card work with readers from another manufacturer, not just Schlage?
Partly. The 9420 works with Schlage readers and electronic locks in encrypted mode, and with other manufacturers' readers on CSN only, meaning the third-party reader reads the card serial number rather than the secured Schlage application sector. If your existing non-Schlage system is set up to read card serial numbers, these will enroll. If it expects its own encrypted sector data, they will not.
2) Should I use a MIFARE Classic smart card or a plain proximity card for a new access control install?
MIFARE Classic is the step up. It runs at 13.56 MHz on ISO 14443A, carries 3DES encryption between card and reader, diversified keys and mutual authentication, where basic proximity credentials just present a number. Schlage positions MIFARE Classic for new installs at facilities with moderate security needs. The trade-off is that the reader has to be a 13.56 MHz smart reader; a legacy prox-only reader will not read it.
3) How close does a MIFARE Classic 13.56 MHz smart card have to be held to the reader?
Read range on the Schlage 9420 credential is up to 3 inches. That is a present-and-tap credential, not a long-range or hands-free one, so it suits door readers at handle height. If you need users to be read from a vehicle or through a bag at distance, this is the wrong credential type.
4) Can I use Schlage MIFARE cards for vending or transit as well as door access?
Yes, and that is a deliberate part of the design. Schlage secures only the access control sector; the remaining memory sectors are left open for you or any vendor you choose to write to. The 9420 can hold multiple applications, and the description names transit, cashless vending and point-of-sale among them. The memory structure is fixed, so plan your sector allocation with whoever writes the second application.
5) Can I get our logo printed on Schlage MIFARE credentials?
Custom artwork and laser engraving are offered on Schlage MIFARE Classic credentials. Worth knowing before you commit: the 9420 is a clamshell card, which is the thicker slot-punch style badge, not the thin ISO card used for full-bleed direct-to-card photo printing. If you need photo ID badges printed in house on your own printer, specify an ISO-style card instead of the clamshell.
6) Do MIFARE Classic cards meet the ISO 14443 standard our integrator specified?
The 9420 credential is built on ISO 14443A and is stated compliant with the ISO 14443 international standard. That is the specification an integrator is usually pointing at when they call for a 13.56 MHz contactless smart credential, and it is also what gives the faster data transfer compared with older proximity technology.
7) How many cards come in a box of Schlage 9420 clamshell credentials?
