1) Will the Schlage 9520 MIFARE card work on my existing 125 kHz proximity readers?
No. The 9520 is a 13.56 MHz MIFARE Classic contactless smartcard, and a 125 kHz prox reader cannot read it. If your openings are still on legacy prox, you either replace or dual-technology the readers first, or keep buying prox credentials for those doors. Where the 9520 fits is a facility moving to smart credentials, or a new install being built on 13.56 MHz from the start.
2) Can I use Schlage 9520 smartcards with a non-Schlage reader or lock?
Partly, and the difference matters. On Schlage readers and electronic locks the card is read encrypted, using the secured access control sector. On other manufacturers' readers and locks, it reads by CSN (card serial number) only, so you get the chip's serial number rather than the encrypted Schlage credential data. Plan your head end around that before you standardize a building on these.
3) How many Schlage 9520 cards come in a pack?
The 9520 MIFARE smartcard is packaged 100 cards to a box, which is the standard credential pack size for a card order. Size your order in multiples of 100 when you are badging a building or restocking a front desk.
4) How close does a badge have to be held to the reader with these Schlage smartcards?
Read range on the 9520 is up to 3 inches. That is a present-and-hold credential, not a hands-free or vehicle-gate one, so it suits door readers, elevator readers and time clocks where the user taps the card. For a parking gate or a long-range application you need a different credential technology entirely.
5) Can our vending, transit or POS system share the same Schlage 9520 card as access control?
That's what the open architecture is for. Schlage secures one sector for the access control application, and the remaining sectors are left open for you or any vendor you choose to write to. The 2.5k bit chip is laid out in 5 ISO sectors with a fixed memory structure, so a cashless vending, transit or point-of-sale application can live on the same badge your staff already carry.
6) Is the data on a Schlage MIFARE smartcard actually secure, or is it just a serial number like a prox card?
There is real cryptography on it, unlike a prox card that broadcasts a static number. The 9520 uses 3DES encryption between card and reader, with diversified keys and mutual authentication, and it is built to the ISO 14443 standard (ISO 14443A for the faster data transfer). That is the level a facility with moderate security needs is generally specifying when it moves off proximity.
